  1. Actually, that has no relevance. It's rare to hit on a guy like Berrios in the supplemental round. Who he is today is what's important, not where he was drafted. Did it impact Pujols' trade value that he was drafted in the 13th round? Which I'd be in favor of if there was someone out there better than the current crop of players. The catching position is ugly this offseason.
  2. I'm not sure that obsession came from Ryan. There's a very good chance - maybe even likely - that obsession came from Gardenhire. Last year, we didn't see a Kubel or Bartlett on the roster. The closest thing we saw was Santana, who Molitor wanted to give as many chances as possible to succeed because he's a promising young player.
  3. Eh, I don't know about the second part. This team is probably going to enter ST with Buxton, Hicks, Rosario, and Arcia fighting for space... And that's if they don't pick up a stopgap FA. I think the likelihood of Robinson starting the season on the 25 man is low unless something bad happens.
  4. Trying to get Robinson back on a MiLB deal is the prudent and smart decision. He's a good backup measure on a team full of young outfielders. You don't want him starting every day for a prolonged stretch but if you need a fourth OF in a pinch, he's just fine in that role.
  5. For a season? I might not care. We all know that every FA is a risk and almost every 3+ year deal is not going to pay off in the final year or two (depending on contract length). Those are the terms on which FA is built. You can either swallow that bitter pill, accept its reality, and improve the team or you can continue watching scrub after scrub rotate through this roster. Personally, I'm really tired of seeing the latter. The Twins don't need to spend money on every position and I questioned their expenditure on Santana last season... But that doesn't mean they shouldn't spend money on any position. They need a catcher. They have zero chance of successfully filling that position internally (unlike the pitching situation last offseason). So that means trade or buy. Given the likelihood of trade requiring a loss of Berrios and/or Kepler, I think buy is the pretty obvious choice here.
  6. You obviously know nothing about John Oliver. Yes, he's liberal but he's just as willing to take swings at the left as he does the right (he's one of the few people on TV who has aggressively gone after Obama for his drone usage). I see you're not actually defending Matt Bevin here, though... Instead, you choose to use an ad hominem attack on Oliver. It's not John Oliver's fault Matt Bevin is a slimeball.
  7. Well, that means the Twins would have to find a stopgap replacement for 1-2 seasons. Given that Nolasco will be off the books and Santana/Mauer will be in their final seasons, that shouldn't be terribly difficult. Or hey, maybe Turner or another Twins prospect has come into his own by that point. The Twins shouldn't be terribly concerned with what happens to payroll in 2018. They're trying to win baseball games in 2016. If the only "loss" to becoming a better team is money, I don't really care and neither should they (at least to a point). Any dollar they spend that brings improvement to the team is a dollar they'll probably get back at the ticket box. Right now, winning baseball games is a very good investment for the Minnesota Twins. They could see increased ticket sales every year for the next half decade (and the increased TV revenue that goes along with winning).
  8. Yeah, Kepler just isn't highly regarded enough to lure in a true ace and after his breakout 2015, I think his best days are in front of him. It would take a lot to pry him away if I was the GM. An ace (maybe Sonny Gray) would probably require Kepler AND Berrios and that's a price I wouldn't be willing to pay.
  9. Not necessarily arguing but Nishioka had three consecutive seasons of .787 or better OPS. That's pretty good for a middle infielder. And then there's the fact that NPB competition is more highly regard than Korean baseball. And Nishioka was three years younger when he signed the deal. I'm not saying the two players are comparable but there's reason to be skeptical of any numbers coming out of southeast Asian baseball.
  10. Yes, this. It's unfortunate he has/had a drug problem but too many expect the Twins to be omnipresent about some pretty crazy things (including some things yet to happen). See Santana, Ervin. If a team hits on their 40-60 pick every second or third year, that's a solid track record. I won't fault the Twins for missing on a guy, particularly under these circumstances.
  11. I can see your thinking here and while I agree with much of it, I just can't see the need for Pierzynski AND Zunino. That's a lot of roster taken up by inflexible players.
  12. "Why not Wieters?" is a good way to frame this question. In a field where every catching option is either flawed or expensive (prospect-wise) to acquire, "Why not Wieters?"
  13. No, man. No.
  14. Not a good World Series. I was hoping the Mets would put up more of a fight. But congrats to the Royals! KC deserved the title, as did their fanbase for suffering through so many years of torturous baseball.

  18. What I've heard is even more concerning: Yeah, his fastball hits 93-95... sometimes. Other times, it's sitting at 90-93. That's... problematic. (warning: I could be confusing 2015 with 2014... but I've read Stewart's fastball velo is all over the place)
  19. While this would normally be the case, don't forget Jay has been a reliever for almost all of the past three seasons. I think that will slow down his progress a bit, almost certainly slower than Garza clicked through the system. Garza went all the way from A+ to Minnesota in a single season. I think that's asking a bit much of Jay, who will be on a much stricter innings limit as he stretches out. edit: I see Seth already mentioned this in a later post.
  20. I'd love to see the organization follow the Cubs and others by putting a baseball guy in the president seat and Ryan would look good in that role. I question whether Ryan wants to be in baseball much longer, though.
  21. The book is a lot more than the Ryan interview. The interview is 20-22 pages of a 101 page book.
  22. I'd have no problem trading Santana if Ryan can get value for him... But that'll be a tough sell. Maybe bundled into a deal with another player might work. And good point about Michael. He looks like he might be a futility guy, though I don't think he can play short.
  23. The proceeds go to those who worked on the book. These offseason handbooks take weeks of time and hundreds of hours to write, design, edit, and produce.
  24. Ryan has only traded with the Nationals once, AFAIK.
  25. Fair enough. I don't think we're really arguing here. I want to see Santana get one more shot... After that, I'm not sure.
