  1. Castro has the potential to be good. He has value. Nolasco, not so much. The Twins would have to up the offer by a considerable amount to lure Castro from the Cubbies.
  2. Money is definitely a component, probably the largest component. Without doing anything, the Twins' 2016 payroll is around $105m, I think. Greinke is a $25m player. That's $130m of committed money. I think we can all agree that's higher than the Twins will go next season, never mind the other roster holes the team needs to fill. On top of that, the Twins aren't going to just cut a $20m or more contract in Nolasco and/or other guys. That means the Twins have, again, too many pitchers. Roster spots are finite and the Twins are approaching the territory where they have more players they want to keep (notice I didn't say should) than they have roster spots. Combine those two things and we have a situation where Greinke is not coming to the Twins unless they move two of Nolasco, Santana, Hughes, or Milone. If those things happened, I've love to have Greinke on the team.
  3. I never said the Twins have enough pitching. I said they have too many pitchers. There's a difference between those two statements. The reality of the situation is the Twins need to offload arms and money before they can acquire another expensive arm. Call it invalid logic or whatever you please but that's the reality of the situation.
  4. Several other guys are getting raises. The real difference is maybe $5-7m, can't remember the exact numbers.
  5. Nope. The Twins have too many pitchers. Find a way to offload Santana and Nolasco. Then I'd love to see Greinke on the team.
  6. Never mind that he is one of the worst defenders in baseball according to advanced metrics. 365 innings in the OF with a -14 DRS. Ouch.
  7. So many times this. Reagan was charismatic but actually did very little worth noting in the Oval Office. He was, at best, a mediocre president. He gets a lot of unwarranted credit for "crushing the Reds" but damn, there was so much silliness in his presidency. Iran/Contra, Star Wars, the astrology nonsense, never mind the long term crippling of our mental health infrastructure (he didn't get nearly the flak he deserved for that blunder). If you want a post-war Republican worth talking about, I'd start with Eisenhower. Pre-war but still 20th century, Roosevelt. Yet the GOP goes with the all-style, no-substance president as their golden icon. Given the party's behavior, I guess that shouldn't surprise me even a little bit.
  8. Well, that's just it... The GOP has let the religious right and anti-immigration zealots take the reins and replaced economic pragmatism with fear and ideology. It's the very definition of demagoguery. Work the public into a lather over fear of nonsensical bull**** and do whatever the hell you please while they're distracted. Putin and the GOP aren't terribly different when you get right down to it... They're using the same playbook. Rile up the public about gays, immigrants, and those evil "others" - bonus points if you can start a war over it - which stops them from noticing just how much their daily life sucks. I'm so vitriolic about the modern GOP not because I hate the idea of the Republican Party - quite the contrary, really - but because I expect better of them. I want a grounded, realistic GOP that holds tight the purse strings and stops the Democrats from losing their minds and spending money willy-nilly. I want a true party of freedom as an option for my vote: social, economic, personal, the entire ball of wax. That is not the current GOP and hasn't been for quite some time. They spend more money than the damned Democrats.
  9. Kudos to Colabello for riding a .411 BABIP through an entire season. That's crazy. Danny Santana had a .405 BABIP last season and at least that dude has wheels.
  10. 1. In what alternate universe can Trump be considered a "great guy"? 2. Those two people sound a lot like Trump himself. Confident, blustering, but lacking actual substance. Everyone one needs to know about the 2015 GOP can be summed up in this sentence: Donald Trump and Ben Carson are leading every major poll. It's embarrassing for the country and particularly the GOP. I've never seen people so wildly unqualified to hold office leading a significant poll, much less two of them leading the same polls. The GOP has spent a decade fostering the idea government is evil and stupid, yet they seem surprised this is the end result of a decade's worth of demagoguery and ideology. They've poisoned their own party. I know there's a remote chance of it happening but I would love for one of them to win the nomination. At that point, the Democratic Party could give me the nomination and I'd beat Trump or Carson, simply because I'm not insane. The best thing for the long term success of America is for the GOP to implode into itself in hopes something more rational would grow in its place. Two party systems don't work if one of the parties isn't a viable option because they're crazy.
  11. I really hope the ship sailed on this idea in September. I'm not a huge Escobar fan but the guy's last 911 plate appearances have resulted in a .737 OPS. He's going into his age 27 season. Eduardo Escobar should be the Twins starting shortstop on Opening Day 2016.
  12. It was kind of embarrassing. Chafee: You guys are great. I really like every one of you. Can I send you Christmas cards? I'd really like to send you all Christmas cards and my wife will bake you all fruitcake. Webb: Chafee went over his time. I'd like more time to speak about his wife's fruitcake. Also my time in the military. This isn't fair.
  13. I will really struggle if Clinton is on the ticket. I cannot in good conscience vote for another Clinton or Bush. I also dislike her because she's a political leaf in the wind. She says what she thinks the crowd wants to hear. I have very little idea where she actually stands on most of the issues because she zig-zags so often.
  14. Yeah. It's what we all think we want in a president but in reality, I'm not sure a president with that mindset can succeed. The debate cemented my support for Sanders, mostly because I'm tired of choosing between the douche and turd sandwich every four years... But I'm not sure he'd be a good president. It also doesn't help that he's considerably farther left than myself. I struggle to understand how anyone could watch that debate full of rational adults saying rational things and still vote Republican in 13 months. I don't even agree with much of the Democratic platform but I've been reduced to voting for the party that doesn't terrify me and make me want to move to Canada or Europe (not hyperbole, I've considered it several times). Then again, I think the GOP has a snowball's chance in hell of winning the presidency until they remove their collective heads from their asses. The GOP was once the party of pragmatism, which helped normal citizens overlook some of their regressive social policy... But today's GOP has become a two-headed beast of reckless ideology and regressive social policy. That's an unwinnable combination in the short term. American citizens still remember what happened under Bush and he was a moderate compared to many of the clownshoes standing on that GOP stage. In short, the GOP is a regional party and will continue to be one until they forcibly remove the radical elements that have slowly crept into power over the past three decades. And that leaves me as a very reluctant Democrat. Yay, America?
  15. I'm about halfway through the debate. While I don't agree with much of what has been said during the debate, I'm relieved to see adults saying adult things. The GOP debates set the bar absurdly low.
  16. Ooh, interesting. I would say... maybe... yes. Maybe yes. Probably yes. Gray doesn't miss as many bats as you'd like from a frontline starter but he has proven to be a pretty elite guy over a prolonged stretch of time. Also, he is a slightly better pitcher on the road so O.coO.cooO.co probably isn't a factor in his success.
  17. I don't disagree but I try to avoid getting into arguments that debate whether a player should have been up within a 3-4 week swing period. Two weeks here, two weeks there aren't enough to really get me worked up. My point was that had Sano not suffered that injury, it's likely the Twins see him get substantial PAs in 2014 and come into 2015 with a roster spot. That's a huge difference over the course of a season even if Sano regresses (which I think is likely). It's also somewhat likely Buxton would have seen a September call-up but given his 2015 struggles, his PAs may not have changed much this past season. Losing both those players for a season was a pretty big shot to the 2015 Twins, both in performance potential and fan interest early in the season. As you indirectly pointed out in your post, the Twins were promoting those two guys pretty aggressively before their injuries.
  18. He didn't exactly "lose" the season... He had nearly 300 PAs. Compared to Buxton's 120 and Sano's 0, that's a considerable difference. Plus, Correa is one guy. The Twins lost both of their top prospects in the same season. I'm not making excuses for the Twins but that's a tough hurdle to overcome, yet the team did just that by posting an 83 win season. Could it have been better for the Twins? Sure, I think the bullpen roster management was atrocious... But imagine what having 550 PAs of Sano and maybe 300-400 of a slightly improved Buxton could have done for this team. Sano by himself probably gets them into the postseason, bullpen be damned. Of course Sano and an improved bullpen would have been... nice.
  19. I thought Damon was an excellent choice as Watney. He has the humorous charm required of the character. To me, the most disappointing aspect of the movie was how they toned down a couple of Watney's interactions with NASA. They were pretty hilarious in the book.
  20. The movie is very good. Of course, the book is better. Both are worth reading/watching. The movie is a good interpretation and only really shows its flaws if you've read the novel (the movie cut some of the best "science-y" scenes of the book).
  21. I think there's a good chance that played a part but the guy was down 1-2mph on his fastball for the season. I don't think he was right most of the year. Of course, multiple factors probably came into play. Was he changing his pitch selection due to coaching or was he changing pitch selection because his arm wasn't right? I don't know.
  22. Not directed at me but if the Twins end up under .500 next season and it's not due to devastating injury (ie. bad offseason moves), I'd seriously consider moving on from Ryan immediately following the season. I won't blame a GM for bad injury luck but other than that, there's no excuse for this team regressing in any way.
  23. While I hate to argue whether the Cubs would be better or worse in the AL - I think it's a dumb argument because the Cubs would build a different roster if they played in the AL - I think "mediocre" in the AL translates to "decent" in the NL. The two leagues simply aren't playing on the same level because one has a distinct rule advantage. There's a reason the AL clobbers the NL pretty much every year.
  24. I agree the Twins are conservative, probably to a fault... But I think using Epstein and Maddon as examples is a bit far-fetched. But, like you, I'd like to see a bit more forward-thinking in this org, especially at the top.
