    Yep. And I don't think even the Pohlads forced the front office to do that during their 2000s run. Cleveland fans should be furious right now. They're piecing together a run now but could easily be right in the mix had they spent for a few more wins in the first half of the season.

    I'm not knocking Polanco at all. He's a very good overall player. But he's not a defensive standout.

    No worries, the deal is still likely a little bit light because of the control of Boyd/Greene. Which is why I'm not crazy about packaging two players like that, particularly a reliever. Sure, you get a lot of control over Greene, but does anyone really want to pay that much for control over a reliever? I really struggle with the idea of paying that much for a 30 year old reliever who could fall to pieces at pretty much any moment. Look at Addison Reed. He was a match (or slightly better) than Greene and a year or two younger when he came to Minnesota. The dude straight up fell to pieces and will likely be out of baseball permanently. Starters carry a similar risk but they're so much harder to acquire or develop that you kinda have to take on that risk from time to time... but I don't feel the same need with relievers. If you need a reliever, go get a rental or maybe a guy with 1.5 years of control. Don't pay through the nose for 2+ years of control because there's a very good chance that control won't be something you actually want in year two or three.

    I think that's a boon and a detriment. It's boon because you have players who can shuffle the diamond. That's good, injuries happen. You need guys like Kepler and Gonzalez to move around a lot. It's a detriment because it means the Twins don't have many dominant defensive players at a position. Notice that the best outfielder in baseball, Buxton, doesn't move positions because OF COURSE HE DOESN'T. If the Twins had a shortstop of that calibre, it'd be the same thing. Or a purely dominant second baseman, who *may* move over to short on occasion. This is a really good roster and I commend the FO for putting it together but it's more of a "let's make this work through sheer body count that doesn't suck" than an actual dominant defensive alignment. But again, the boon is that sheer dominance fails if a single person falters. Pick your poison.

    Honestly, I'd prefer a mix. If the Twins can get a starter with 1+ year of control, pay for it. Relievers? I honestly don't give a ****. That subset of pitching is so damned volatile that I'd almost prefer the Twins work more on developing their own and using FA to piecemeal a bullpen.

    I actually think Lewis and Rooker are a pretty good starting point. But a lot more interesting back-end pieces will be required to make that deal work. Quality back-end pieces with real upside.

    Verlander didn't cost more. The headliner was the Astros' #3 prospect, who had a 54/84 ranking on BA/BP top 100, respectively. He wasn't even on the MLB.com list that year.

    Which is why I try not to attach myself to specific names. What I want the front office to do is target the player they see the most upside in and go get that player. Now, obviously, that probably means they're not going to chase a 6.00 ERA journeyman but that also means I'm okay with them not chasing the splashiest name in baseball (but it also may mean they need to get that splashy name). I care about results, not the name on a jersey. And if I don't have faith in the front office knowing more about baseball than me and having more information at their fingertips to make this kind of decision, they shouldn't have the job they have.

    Ah, if you're talking about preseason rankings versus in-season struggles that may have changed their rankings, I completely misunderstood your point. Yes, both have almost certainly dropped down lists due to recent performance.

    No, the Jays probably don't have them both top ten but disregarding publications is pretty misleading and misses the point. We literally have no idea how the Jays (or literally any of the 30 MLB teams, including the Twins) honestly view any prospect. For all we know, the Jays have Kirilloff ahead of Lewis. Maybe they love them both. Maybe they hate them both. No one knows except the Jays. What we do have is publications that do a generalized ranking of all prospects. Lewis is consensus top ten and Kirilloff is ranked 9 by MLB.com, 15 by BA, and 39 by BP (obviously because Gleeman hates the Twins). Not consensus top ten for both but definitely highly ranked.

    Unlikely, though I could see Cleveland within 2-3 games by the end of July, which would be a pretty tight race at that point with ~10 head-to-heads left in the season. Cleveland had to go 11-3 to gain ~6 games on the Twins. While it'd hurt pretty badly to be swept by Cleveland, it's also unlikely to happen. Cleveland isn't going to keep winning 80% of their games and these things have a tendency to ebb and flow through a season. I think it's just as likely the Twins are up by 7-8 games at the end of the month as it is they're up by just 2-3 games at the end of the month.

    That’s what I mean by “service clock”. Adding a player to the 40-man certainly isn’t as critical as running up service time in the majors, but it’s also important to how a player’s control is managed going forward. For example, Rooker’s trade value drops a bit if he’s on the 40-man roster. Anyway, my main point is that teams don’t make unnecessary moves that cannot be reversed. Once a guy is on the 40-man, he’s there for good and your options going forward are therefore somewhat limited.

    Teams don’t add players like Rooker to the 40-man roster as a depth piece. Rooker isn’t a great prospect but he’s good enough that the team can and will control how his service clock is managed.

    I’m not defending the Twins lack of 2000s acquisitions but that 2006 team had some rotten luck. Liriano went down and then Radke’s arm basically fell off. All of that happened well after the deadline.

    Yeah, I think this is true. Also, there’s reason to believe the rotation is underperforming a bit right now while the bullpen is almost certainly overperforming. Anyway, fix what you can and try to get the maximum gain from those pickups. I don’t really care how or where it comes from.

    Honest question: what makes you believe Morin and Sadler are different guys going forward? I’m legitimately curious. Up to this point, they’re pretty much twinsies statistically.

    And a FIP well over 4. I'm not saying Sadler wouldn't have been an okay flyer but he's hardly someone worth flipping over backwards to get. In an era when hitters almost pride themselves on how violently they can miss the ball while swinging, Sadler has a swinging strike rate of just 8.9%. We poke fun of Parker around here and his swinging strike rate is 10.1%. And Parker's K% is over six points higher than Sadler's K%.

    Hard to argue with this decision. Odorizzi is badly needed down the stretch and simply has not been very good for the past month. By skipping one start, he gets, what... like almost two weeks off?

    This is pretty much my take on it, too. I hate the concept of abortion but feel any legislation of it is unfair to one gender while ignoring the part played by the other and it's realistically unfeasible. As a foster parent, I reel at the thought of what would happen if mothers were forced to bring babies to term. We already have enough neglected kids that are destined for prison cells without serious intervention, let's not add more to the mix.

    Not all Catholics believe everything the church tells them to believe. Do you have the same problems with Catholics that complain about Pope Francis' attempts to turn the church more progressive?
