It is less about Mauer being fine than the growing amount of catchers landing on the 7-day DL that will handcuff managers from time-to-time and how teams cope with the increased concussion awareness .

At this point Joe should be done catching period. He is still owed 5yrs @ 23m = 115 mill. One more foul ball off the mask and it's a good chance you get nothing. Move him to 1b and his chances of producing the remaining 5 yrs are very good. He goes back to catching and they are not very good. Yes he is worth more catching but he is worth zero sitting at home.

The move is smart and prudent, no need at this time for macho, macho man.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if the Twins told him to take his high old time coming back on this one...

The only reason for him to play at all is to maybe sell a few more tickets while the team plays out the string. If he comes back at all this season it should be as a 1B or DH only.

I find it hard to believe that it's not possible to design a catcher's mask that absorbs more of the impact from foul tips.
