Twins miss out on competitive balance picks

*slams fist on table*

i have no idea what that means!!!!

Haha.

The 10 teams with the smallest revenues and the 10 teams with the smallest markets get entered into a lottery to get extra draft picks. There were 14 teams eligible for these picks, there is obviously some overlap with the 10 smallest revenues/markets, but the Twins were not one of them. The picks are either competitive balance round A (right after round 1) or competitive balance round B (right after round two). They give out 6 picks for each with two teams not getting picks. These picks can be traded. While the Twins didn't get a pick, once again they weren't eligible, the Royals and Indians each received a round A pick. Last year the Royals were able to use their competition balance round pick on Manaea after going under slot on their first round pick.

In other words, the Twins are judged to be a mid-size market, have above average attendance, and ownership is walking away with a lot of profit. It's only the team that isn't doing well.

Add that up and it's kind of damning.

That will probably hurt your computer monitor, possibly hurt your hand, and leave him unscathed. So punch away and let us know how it comes out.

How on earth do the Cardinals end up qualifying for that?

Because it has nothing to do with record from last season.

St. Louis is actually one of the smallest markets. No one has mentioned that Detroit was also in the lottery. They have one of the smallest revenues. No teams are forced to open their books, but of course as the name implies, the Competitive Draft Lottery indicates the Twins are in a stronger financial situation than both the Cardinals and the Tigers.

Revenue is not the same as profit. We don't know what they're operating costs are, so you don't know their profits compared to revenue.

I'm not a saying the Pohlads aren't making money. They most certainly are. But let's not assume that they are making more profit than some other teams, because we just don't know.

As far as revenues for the competitive balance lottery go, I'm sure these we're calculated off of 2012 revenues. The difference between the Twins (#17 in revenue) and Rockies (#22 in revenue) was all of $15 M. There is a chance for the lowest revenue clubs to change a lot for next year's picks.

I got revenues from here:

Before we get into this discussion again, know that the revenues are estimated and operating capital is not the same as profit.
