What is the Twins strategy this season?

It also seems pretty convenient that many of the same posters who argue vehemently that the Twins should "wait till they've got all that young talent in place before they go out and get the final pieces" are some of the same posters who castigate Dayton Moore for attempting to do exactly that.

I think the concept is a good one.

I think the execution by Moore was abysmal. That trade is going to haunt Kansas City for quite some time, especially when Shields bails to a major market after next season.

I wouldn't have wanted the Twins to spend what KC spent to get Shields...but it's pretty understandable why KC made that move. They've been "set up beautifully for the future" for a decade or two now, and what do they have to show for all that shiny minor league talent? They want to win, at the major league level, now. Not in five years, not in two years. Now. I can respect that and wish the Twins would operate more on the theory that a winning season now is worth more than a winning season 5 years from now.

Waiting for magic to happen and all that you need to be a world series contender falls into place, at the same time, in the big leagues IS NOT how you win, either.

I agree with this. I would not want to Twins to do this last offseason but I thought it was a worthwhile gamble for the Royals at that point in their franchise's trajectory. It looks like it might not work out, but more because the young players didn't take a step forward.

This could be a worthwhile gamble for the Twins to take in 3-4 years, but makes little sense as the franchise is in the process of moving on from some veterans and trying to break in younger players.

So your saying the only SP in our system is Gibson?

Or your saying that we need to Sign him till hes 40?

I'm saying that you've been screaming to trade away every prospect in the system for guys like Shields. It doesn't work. And if you haven't noticed, even with one of the best farm systems in baseball, this system is still fairly bereft on starting pitching talent. Right now it's Gibson, Meyer, May, Berrios, Stewart, and maybe Baxendale. If history is any indication, half of them won't make it, and you want to trade away anyone and everyone for an expensive "ace" that will help a 70 win team become a 75 win team.

I'd rather suffer through another losing season or two to pick up another Buxton or Stewart than to overpay for a guy who won't put us over the top. I'm all for trades/FA signings when there's just a few missing pieces. Unfortunately, this puzzle has a lot of blank spots.

Maybe. Most likely the Royals will flip Shields next deadline and recoup some of the value lost (a la the Brewers and Greinke getting Segura and others).

I'm not sure I'd call KC a piece or two away. Their strong farm has graduated, but not produced the expected results. More than anything, I think Moore jumped the gun on that trade, and right now, it looks as though I'm right.

Doumit was getting all these starts because he went on a short tear and some comment was made that he plays better if he plays somewhere everyday, and not just come off the bench (i.e. fulltime DH).

That was my feeling as well. The Royals lost 90 games last season and while some of their young players have been decent, none of them looked to be on the cusp of turning into a Miggy or Verlander.

Trading for a piece is a good idea. I don't think using the #4 prospect in baseball to get that piece is a good idea and I don't think you pursue that piece (particularly since it's on a two year contract) when your team is fresh off a 90 loss season.

Moore made a lot of assumptions about the future in that Shields trade and right now, the results aren't very promising.

Don't look now, but KC is on a role...and the pitching is a big reason why. ERA under 2.00 in the last 12 games, in which they won 10.
