Jordan Hicks: starter?

Giants signed Hicks to be a starter apparently. Seems like a goofy move, but if it works out, they got him on the cheap.

Have to say, with how they revived Carlos Rodon's career, the Giants are about the only team that I could see making a move like this work.

But yeah, I wouldn't exactly bet on it working out great either. We'll see.

I'd buy into this transition better if it was a reliever who didn't already have significant control problems. And a reliever with more than two pitches.

I'd buy into it better, but still not much.

Just the fact that his former team, with every possible motive to make him a starter, didn't, is enough to question it.  The money is probably the same everywhere but from his standpoint he probably went with someone who would give him a chance.  If he hits as a starter, the Cards look really bad.

I really like Hicks, wish the Twins would have signed him first. He added a 3rd pitch last year ( a sweeper to go with his 4 -seamer & sinker) & had great results down the stretch with Toronto. His BB/9 was down 3 while with the Jays. Throughout his career so far he has consistently generated a lot of ground balls resulting in an excellent .5 HR/9. His top tier stuff makes it very hard to get hits(6.8/9). Now if he starts limiting BB's as he did at the end of last year it could be a huge breakout for him.

It's really hard to make a switch like this if you are concerned about players remaining in designated boxes. 

Once you take them out of the box. You see how many EFFECTIVE innings he can give you.
