Mr. Brooks Verified Member Posted May 26, 2013 Posted May 26, 2013 Who are you to demand an explanation from me for saying he pitched fine? Who are you to call Seth a Homer and say his blog isn't worth reading for expressing his opinion. Condescension is only allowed to be practiced by you I guess. Where did I "demand" an explanation? I simply said I'd like to hear it. If Seth's opinion is that he has full confidence in every member of the FO, as well as Gardy and Andy, despite their routine failures, then that IS being a homer. He can take it as a compliment or an insult, maybe he prides himself on being a Twins homer blog, I don't know. But it is what it is. No objective person would say such a thing. That is something that only a fan would say. There is a huge difference between disagreeing on opinion, and flat out calling someone a liar, not once but three times. I disagreed with your opinion, but I would never claim you were lying about it. Same with Seth's opinion. The way the internet should be handled is you should treat people as you would if you were face to face. I think most adults are capable of arguing their opinions face to face. I promise you would't flat out call another man a liar, with no evidence, three times if you were face to face. That is just picking a fight. Moderator note -- I am going to let this one post slide because I do believe that calling another poster a liar (about whether he watched the game) is out of bounds. That said, this quarrel needs to stop now. glunn
greengoblinrulz Provisional Member Posted May 26, 2013 Posted May 26, 2013 bloop singles count. If they dont, then admit Mauer would hit .275.If Thielbar doesnt give up a double, its still 3runs in 5.2IP....NOT good enough by anyones standards. I also have a huge problem with Twins homers....whomever they are.

I'm not so sure you want people knowing you watched the game and still came away with the assessment that you did but OK... If you say you watched the game... OK.. I apologize for my assumption. Pelfrey threw too many pitches but he moved the ball around and didn't groove many against a good hitting team. Struck out... I don't know 4 or 5. He walked too many 3 or 4 but he was trying to avoid getting plastered by grooving the ball and he didn't get plastered. He pitched well... He gave the team a chance to win. Seth had already given the reason for his optimism and you ignored it and took a cheap shot at him... I won't speak for Seth but he obviously feels no further need to explain himself. and neither do I. Be a little more respectful.

With all due respect to both of you, this exchange has not been consistent with TD policy. Implicitly calling another member a liar is inflammatory and violates TD policy. Then responding with ***** type expletives escalates the problem. I appreciate the fact that Brian apologized and I appreciate Mr. Brooks' request that the argument be conducted like adults speaking face to face. But please let's learn something from this so it does not happen again.

Respectfully, Riverbrian Thank you, my friend. This losing streak has been painful for all of us. We all need to make an extra effort to not take out our unhappiness on each other. You guys are brothers in sharing a common love of the Twins. You share a special bond. Please try to always keep that in mind.
Guest USAFChief Guests Posted May 26, 2013 Posted May 26, 2013 bri...with all due respect, the 6th inning counts for Pelfrey. While he wasn't terrible Sunday, by any means, IMO he didn't "pitch well" either.

While he wasn't terrible Sunday, by any means, IMO he didn't "pitch well" either. All respect taken... The 6th Inning does count but we would all feel differently if Willingham makes that catch. It wasn't a question of Willingham being slow. He could have reached that ball. He was trotting in after it... I can only assume that he didn't want to collide with and take out Florimon who was busting out full speed but that was Willingham's ball all the way and he could have reached it fairly easy. If Willingham makes that catch (and he should have) Pelfrey pitches 6 innings and allows only 2 runs. Sometimes pitchers get a bad dose of luck and Willingham not making that catch cost us 4 runs. I'm still waiting for Gibson to replace Pelfrey but I tip my cap to him... He was let down by a teammate. Yes it wasn't a shut the door perfect performance because he threw way too many pitches but I appreaciated the effort because he was clearly trying not to leave anything over the middle and he has been leaving it over the middle all year. His caution led to the pitch count in my opinion and he gave us a chance to win. I'd take that performance every time and be really happy. Anyway... I was wrong... I should have kept myself in check. His comment toward me was benign enough. I've reflected and I was more upset with something else from last night that didn't involve me in the first place.
Craig Arko Old-Timey Member Posted May 26, 2013 Posted May 26, 2013 Just an outsider's suggestion, but you may want to consider adding a few more mods to increase the chance of heading these things off before they get overblown. Two (plus the admin) seems a little light for the volume of posts you get. Back to the Doctor Who marathon for me...

There may have been some bad luck involved on the play in question. But the THREE previous batters did hit the ball on the screws, Pelf's a gamer and a warrior and I for one appreciate the gutsy effort, but at that point, he was already on life support.

Being a sports blogger is somewhat of a modern tech age evolution of a sports writer. There have always been 3 types. Fair, objective ones. Homer ones, and guys who stir the pot and rip the local clubs. For example, almost everyone would agree that Sid Hartman is not very objective at times, and is quite a bit of a homer. If you (or he) want to take that as an insult, so be it. He's had a long, great career, but he is what he is. As good as he is, and as long as he's been around, I won't read him. I want objective reporting (and even objective opinions, that is possible), I don't care to read a hometown cheerleading spin on things. Seth gave a 99% confidence rating in every significant member of the organization. That is almost a perfect rating. No objective writer could witness the numerous blunders that have led us to this mess, and come away with the conclusion that the FO and field staff are perfectly capable. Just as Sid Hartman probably doesnt realize he is a homer at times, Seth probably doesn't either, who knows. Seth gave no reasoning or explanation towards the numerous blunders I pointed out, or any of the many others that I didn't take the time to mention. He merely gave a generic reason to believe in Terry Ryan, who is only 1 person of the many stated in the thread. Seth is not just an average poster. He has made himself a public figure (at least in Twins coverage), and I don't consider it disrespectful to say that his take is homerish.

The difference is that for Sid, it's been his modus operandi to gain access by shamelessly becoming "close personal friends" for whomever to gain the story. And has been rewarded handsomely for some 60 years. I think Seth needs to be granted some slack in this regard, I would tend to think this TD venture is a labor of love as much as anything. Still, that being said, I would like an elaboration on how he came to his stated conclusions. Especially for Rob Antony....

You are right, he should be cut some slack if he is not normally a homer, and that was an isolated opinion. I'll admit I don't go out of my way to read Seth's stuff, but I can't recall him ever being critical of the organization. If I'm wrong in that regard then perhaps I ought to give his stuff a chance.
twinsnorth49 Old-Timey Member Posted May 27, 2013 Posted May 27, 2013 RB, I love you man but I can't agree that Pelfrey necessarily pitched "Well" today. As unlucky as it may have seemed in the 6th, you could almost feel it coming, he walked a bit of a tightrope all day and just threw too many pitches. You could argue he was lucky to be where he was come the 6th. He wasn't bad but he just wasn't good either. One other note however, we're all cognizant of the fact that the Twins scored 1 run today, correct? Not sure how most of the thread turned into a Pelfrey bashing session, considering that tidbit.

I agree on the too many pitches... But it wasn't Worley like as stated earlier... he gave the Team a chance to win and if a pitcher does that I think it qualifies as pitching well. He wasnt pitching the 7th... his pitch count was into the 110's... He was a Willingham catch away from departing 2-1. We have all heard the phrase "looks like a line drive in the paper"... This was the opposite in my mind. But... Pelfrey wasn't even the story in my mind. The Offense was the story. Throwing the game on Pelfrey makes no sense in consideration of how... Dead... The offense is. 27 innings and we scored in two of those innings. And Willingham is a story. Players who don't effort to make catches lead to big innings all the time. That one was worth 4 runs and I have no problem... no problem attaching those 4 runs to Willingham directly... That's my own personal WAR. That's how mine works. In that Twins Clubhouse... There better not be anybody pointing fingers at Pelfrey. There better be a big freaking mirror that they all can get in front of.
