How you hope the draft falls

I would like:

Manaea (LHP) 1st Round

Anderson (RHP) 2nd Round

That would provide possibly 2 starting pitchers for the future or some needed trade bait if we need a middle infielder or catcher in the near future. Both are big kids and should be quality arms sooner than later. I would load up on high school position players after the 2nd round or go the college reliever route again to solidify the bullpen in near future.

While I would love to steal Anderson in the second round, which a month ago would have been impossible, but I can't get behind Manaea unless he shows some real improvements over the next three weeks. Kid just isn't the same player he was in the Cape.

Simply put, we obtain one of Gray, Appel, Bryant, or Frazier...in that order of preference.

Just say no to Manaea.

Frazier over Meadows? Doubt it

I am in the "Say No to Manaea"-camp as well. He reminds me far too much of Liriano. Dominant at times showing ELECTRIC stuff, yet other times looking awful and even disinterested. IMO, a top 5 pick has to project as a future All-Star, not a be a project. If Bryant isn't available, I'm not opposed to either young GA OF or even Moran. Stewart won't take any kind of discount to help us take better than slot talent latter on. Manaea just isn't dominant like a top5 pick should be.

you draft Stewart, chances are he doesn't sign and goes to A&M to play QB. Could be a wasted pick.

If the Twins were to take Stewart at 4 you would figure they would know his "number" before pulling the trigger. From what is out there, still too early to be hearing about signability, but most experts see Stewart signing if he goes high enough.

Happens often that a team drafts a guy and can't sign him. You'd figure those teams knew what it'd take as well before pulling the trigger too but it didn't work out. He's pumped to go play football at A&M. Someone will take a shot and it's a very risky chance to take.

It's not really a wasted pick anymore. IIRC, they would get the #5 pick in next years draft, which is supposed to be much better.

I'm not saying they should/would do that but it's not a terrible strategy. It s better than settling for someone this year that isn't really worth it.

It happens very rarely, esp at the top of the draft board. Usually the players that didn't sign had already made it clear before the draft that they didn't want to go (Cole) or the team thought the player would sign for less (Hochever). With the new draft rules, players, teams and agents know the value and it would be discussed before hand. If his agent said, yea, he'll sign for slot and then, after the draft, asked for 2m more, the agent would lose his credibility which, long term, would really hurt him. If his agent says that if he doesn't get 2m or more, he's playing football, the teams that have to get cautious are the teams drafting 8 (I think) or later. Unless he falls out of the top of the draft, I don't think it'll be much of a problem signing him.

If Stewert is the Twins BPA at #4 you pick him. He'll almost certainly sign for around #4 slot money. I'm sure his football option would come into play if he was looking at perhaps #10 slot money. Besides, as said above, the Twins would recieve the #5 pick next year and as we get closer to the draft, I'm getting less and less excited about all but the top three players.

I don't have Stewart #4 anyway.

Your not wrong at all about him being pumped to go there. He loves A&M, loves football, and has family members there. I just find it hard to believe that the Twins would take a guy in the top 5 with out knowing if they could sign them. Especially the way the draft is set up now. While Stewart has stated many times how he wants to go to A&M he hasn't told teams not to draft him like kids have done in the past.

I believe that our coaches at the minor league level are excellent and can do wonders with Manaea (Meyer is now considered the future ACE). He had flaws coming out of college and went in 20th+ round. Either you have the STUFF or you don't. He may just need better mentoring moving forward. Manaea will be that ACE for us from the left side in a few years. Can't deny what he's done in the past. It's there - Just get it back. Worth the risk. Anderson would be great back up plan, if not better in long term.

Meyer

Manaea (he's at least a #4 or #5)

Gipson

Diamond

Berrios

Fun question for people. How would you feel if the Twins took one of the HS OFs (your choice on which one you like better) and then had Boldt fall to them at 43? I ask this because this actually could happen. While they need arms could they really pass up a local talent like Boldt?

I'd be disappointed but I'd trust the team to get the BPA on their draft boards. That's why they get the big bucks and I post on message boards.

But I'd really be bummed. I like our position player prospects but want more high end pitching prospects. I suppose if they added two more blue chippers (and really, Boldt at 43 would be a good thing) I'd have to expect that they'd need to make another trade for pitching. Willingham will be dealt but I don't know how big a prospect he'll bring back. Dempster, when traded, got 2 pretty decent prospects. I'd want something like that.

Imo there is only one pitcher that is deserving at the 4 spot (Stewart). If the Twins see something that concerns them then I would be alright with them passing. That brings Moran, Meadows and Frazier into play. In the second round I am perfectly fine with value picks if one presents itself.

The other part of the equation that gets overlooked is that top 25 prospects are hot commodities in the trade market. In 2-3 yrs the Twins could have a team where it makes sense to trade a top prospect (like an extra OF'er) for a veteran near elite starter. Stock your system with high end talent and things will work out.

re: which prep of'er goes first: scouts think highly of meadows but they fall in love with frazier. i'd guess he goes first as well.

Assuming it goes Gray, Appel, Bryant.

I say Stewart or Frazier.

I am sure the Twins have had long talks with Stewart to gauge his interest. If he is willing to give up football, he should be the choice.

If not, then they take Frazier and we will just have to not care that they system is OF heavy. Not every prospect makes it, injuries happen, flame outs happen. That is why Best Player Available is the way to go.
