Don't think this will motivate him.  Either his arm is hurting or he has lost his stuff.  Either put him on the IL or DFA him.  He does not need a spot here.

Baldelli's approach to pitching changes is squarely in the mainstream of other major league managers.  In order to succeed, he can't simply mimic what the others do, and needs to vary from this overly conventional approach, in some way that I haven't quite decided yet.

Rocco has a lot of inferior relievers to choose from.  How does he even decide which to choose?

This whole argument is basically a hindsight one. Yeah, yeah, you're convinced Duffey sucks, you knew it, and it proved out.  Congrats.  But basically this is a problem of having a whole team of relievers who suck and a front office who did the opposite of noticing or fixing it.  Joe Smith and Pagan?  These are your guys?  Both are also sucking right now, if you haven't noticed, and they will/would suck a lot more against the Yankees.

You have one reliever, and you want to bring him in in a game you're already down to the Yankees?  So that you can stay close while they bring in their 0.35 ERA guy?

There are pots you give up at the table as part of your overall meta-game strategy.  Plus, in Duffey's case, it either works or you have all the info you need to pull the plug.
