phalvorson Verified Member Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 Blue Jays Designate Alex Burnett For Assignment: MLB Rumors - MLBTradeRumors.com "The Blue Jays announced that they have designated right-hander Alex Burnett for assignment, the team announced in a press release. The move clears a 40-man roster spot for Casper Wells, who was claimed on waivers earlier this afternoon."
Seth Stohs Site Manager Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 yeah, that happened last night. The Jays are trying to do the same thing that the Twins did with Burnett. They're trying to get him through waivers so they can send him to the minors but keep him in the organization. He should pass through.
big dog Verified Member Posted April 15, 2013 Posted April 15, 2013 Burnett was picked up by the Orioles (who else?)
Gernzy Verified Member Posted April 16, 2013 Posted April 16, 2013 Baltimore will take anyone who has played for the Twins in the last year or so. I bet we would trade them Morneau for half the starting rotation!
Danchat Old-Timey Member Posted April 16, 2013 Posted April 16, 2013 Baltimore loves scrapping mediocre Twins. Almost like how in football the Seahawks are taking all of the good Vikings!

diehardtwinsfan Old-Timey Member Posted April 17, 2013 Posted April 17, 2013 I like this. Ryan should hold firm at Bundy, Gausman, Eduardo Rodriguez, and Schoop. Might have to throw in Duensing to even it out.
ashbury Verified Member Posted April 24, 2013 Posted April 24, 2013 This is not worth opening up a new thread, but I'll offer the news update (which I didn't see elsewhere here) that the Orioles brought up Burnett when they sent down Jake Arrieta.

The Twins will rue the day they let Burnett slip to those hated Orioles.
ashbury Verified Member Posted April 25, 2013 Posted April 25, 2013 I expect he'll actually carve out a career as a useful relief pitcher. He could pitch until he's 35, for a succession of teams two or three seasons at a time. 40-man roster rules and the state of free-agency seems to rule out developing a guy like him and keeping him for any length of time. Once a high-school prospect fails as a starter but is seen as able to relieve, the original signing team might just about as well cut him, like he's a bust, except he's not a bust. In Burnett's case, putting up below-par numbers as a major leaguer at age 22-23 sealed his fate with the Twins. It's an aspect of the game I don't like. Admittedly, no team rues losing a "useful relief pitcher" - they are widely available to a smart GM.

He may hang on for a couple of years but he is about a perfect example of a replacement reliever that is available every offseason.
