I can click it off relatively easily on my computer, but on my phone, ugh ... take too much screen and isn't any better than a pop up ad

Posted

Using an ipad in low cellular connection that can handle roughly 1 video stream at a time for whatever reason, last night my mlb feed would slowly die if i accessed TD and left this video feed open, and TD page would quickly die (faster than i could post something) if i closed the video feed, and on second or third pass would not come back up at all due to recurring problems loading.

Also on safari but on the iphone, which is a recent upgrade from a non iphone, so very much still learning its nuances, i had a bit where the page kept reloading faster than i could scroll down to the post window.

And per squirrel's suggestion i mention it here, i guess i would say i am hessitent to complain, seeing as i only have gone through what seems normal use, and not gone through any of the tutorials as tohow to use the new site, so i very much could be missing something easy in how the site is intended to be used, somesort of no brainer setting i don't know about that could optimize my usage to me.

But meh, it is what it is.

Hope this helps figure stuff out!

And now seems to start with an ad before the main video, so it is an ad.

We're experimenting with this new format and are very open to changing how we approach video... but please keep in mind that video is time-consuming and that pre-roll ad is the only thing paying for us to create this kind of content (more accurately "paying Tom to create this kind of content").

Please give any and all feedback, this is absolutely still in the beta stage and it WILL be changing in the future based on feedback, overall performance, and user interaction.

For clarity, I do not expect the “sticky” video to remain in its current capacity (rolling on every page load) but for testing purposes, we need it to roll every page load for a few days. Then, probably this week, it will never roll with the sticky video for a similar amount of time.

Afterward, we will have a solid(ish) idea of the performance gap between various kinds of videos and can move forward with a more informed approach to video.

My tablet basically can't handle it and takes it forever to load the site, which probably means I need a new tablet, but that's not happening.

And that's good information to have. Not breaking "end of life" machinery is an important part of site development.

As I said, on my computer ... not a big deal ... it doesn't cover content that I'm reading. Tablet just can't load the pop up video stuff. Ever changing ads and video ads is problematic in general for my older tablet making the site just way to slow to bother with. The phone, though, wish it didn't pop up at all, because that's a smaller screen and that does get annoying as it covers what I'm trying to read.

This is actually what I'm noticing and thinking as well. We may end up landing on a tiered solution that treats desktop, tablet, and mobile all differently.

Still getting pop-ups and not happy about it ?. If I scroll past it, it means I don't want to watch it now.

Yeah ... noticed the pop up on this, again, when I scroll down ... it's not so bad on my full screen computer, but on the phone it's not good. But I know Brock's working on it

I pledge to become a Gold level Caretaker if you get rid of the annoying video pop-ups. I sometimes like to read and sometimes like to watch videos but I never do both at the same time. Please let me pick what I want to do. See my above comments on this thread. The issue has not been resolved. @Brock Beauchamp

Thank you for this, as I never considered this until now. The video is what clips to the page as you scroll and there is no benefit to the video creator for that to happen in the ad-free version of the site.

Let me think about this and figure out the best solution.

Thank you!!!

I just subscribed to a Gold Caretaker membership

@Brock Beauchamp

And that's what we do at Twins Daily. If you have a reasonable request, we make it happen.

And honestly, thank you for the constructive criticism. This is the type of feature that wouldn't have occurred to me in isolation but it's a reasonable request and one I was happy to implement as a site improvement.
