Got to be a pitcher but still I think that Ryan was just yaking... way too early too even start thinking about the draft yet.

I think with Lucas, you still have time to see how he rebounds from the injury. I'd certainly have scouts on hand for that. If he falls, I could see burning a supplemental pick on him and hoping he signs, but if he doesn't you'd get that pick back next year in a deeper draft.

 

I've been reading about Zimmer quite a bit at minorleageball. In some cases, he wows and in others he looks more like supplemental material. That will be interesting. Unless he puts things together, I'm not sure you take him 2 overall. I suspect Houston takes Appel.

 

My biggest fear is that the Twins go with a toolsy OF.

I really hope it's a pitcher mostly because of the lack of top-of-the-rotation starters in the system, but it's been mentioned before: the Twins just haven't had the opportunity to take a lot of those types of guys at the bottom of the first round. Kyle Gibson, because of the injury concern, is the lone exception that pops into my head.

 

Kyle Zimmer just threw a complete game, 3 hit, 11 K, 4 BB shutout over the weekend. He's relatively new to pitching, so his upside is incredible.

 

Byron Buxton isn't just "another" OF though. The Twins haven't had a lot of chances to draft "Justin Upton-types" either.

 

Regardless, when June rolls around, we'll have our opinions, but it's going to be hard for the Twins to screw it up. In five years, we may disagree.

Aaron Hicks was not even close to Buxton's class when he was drafted. A lot of teams liked him better as a pitcher and frankly he was expected to take as long as he's taken or longer to develop at that time. His expectations were increased quite a bit when he surprised everyone with much more advanced plate discipline then expected.

 

The reports on Buxton are that he's the ideal combination of the Upton brothers, Justin's bat and makeup with Bossman Jr's speed, arm and outfield range. That's a very impressive package and worthy of top 2 consideration in pretty much any draft. To me, unless a pitcher seriously steps up between now and the draft you HAVE to take Buxton if he's available, regardless of the glut of outfielders the Twins already have. He's the best talent available and you don't pass that up for need with pick #2.

Hicks was the 14th pick. Huge huge difference. I'd be delighted if they decided on Buxton if he's the best available prospect. Like everyone else, I hope one of the pitchers stands out though.

I doubt the Twins are willing to take the risk on Giolito, so he doesn't make my list. Put me in the camp that doubts they'd go after Buxton if he's available. I know you should take the best player available when picking that high, but I think the Twins are hell bent on adding a pitcher. If I'm wrong and they go position player my gut tells me they'd pick one of the top two SS available or Zuzino, who should be ready when Mauer is ready to give up catching for good.

McCullers was the last on my list and I agree he's not likely. It was between him and Zimmer for my final slot, and I went with McCullers because the Twins love "bloodline" guys and his dad is a former MLer.

Most project McCullers as a closer. I don't see the Twins targeting him.

Not at the #2 pick, but most mock drafts I've seen have him going closer to 20, and although it's unlikely he'd fall to the Twins supp 1st round pick, if he's there, I think they'd be all over him there.

Yeah, that's a different horse. Specifically regarding the number two pick, no, the Twins will not take McCullers. If he's available later on, it's a possibility.

They will never trade for or sign a guy that might be an ACE. So, if you pass on one here, when/how will you ever get a shot at one w/o great luck?

McCullers has only been considered a closer recently. Draft wonks had been debating whether he or Giolito would be a better HS ace. He has 3 out pitches which is uncommon for a high schooler. Aside from the high 90's heater, everyone talked about his great change up and curve. He throws hard but has a nice delivery that didn't put him in the injury concern catagory. His upside seemed to be in Justin Verlander territory, anyone know what happened to drop his stock and start the reliever discussion? I have no clue if he's had trouble this spring and I don't see any recent news results for him.

Mark Appel P, Mike Zuzino C, and Byron Buxton OF, are for sure on the Twin's list.

 

The other 3 most likely are Lucas Giolito (injured or not they have already scouted him and will again when he comes back), Gausman ( who's put up good numbers this year), and Carlos Correa (SS) ( he's the least likely, but given the Twin's draft history I could see them going this way).

 

 

Deven Marrero (SS) isn't showing much power this year and stock is falling to a lower top ten pick, also he agent makes him unattractive. Lance McCullers (P) won't be a starter and won't be drafted that high, Kyle Zimmer is shooting up the draft charts, he has the stuff, just not the exposure, I'm guessing he not on the Twins radar yet for the top pick.

They are unlikely to take Giolito with his arm injury. With my years of watching the Twins, they will look for the pitcher with highest upside, and take him. While the new rules for the draft do eliminate parts of the reason that the Moneyball-led A's were successfull (drafting kids who didn't "look like big leaguers" for way less than others would have drafted them for when they were taken), the Twins still have sabermetrics, and they should use them to their advantages to find the best candidate for them, whether they are a big name out there right now or not.

Indeed. And we are not going to know who of the alleged "half dozen" will be injured before the draft or who not in the alleged half dozen will have a killer performance (we are talking about kids who grew a year) and be on the radar.

 

I just think that it is silly to project picks before they play their seasons this Spring. This question is about as silly as trying to project the 2013 NFL draft...

With Gilioto, I think the question is whether he comes back healthy before the draft. If he does, he could still be in the mix. I think they have to be watching Zimmer right now, though I would think Houston is too. I'm in agreement with others, they need to take the best pitcher there at #2. If Gilioto isn't healthy, he could fall into the supplemental round, and I could see burning a pick on him because if he doesn't sign, they simply get that pick back next year.
