Ultimate Twins Internal Roster Construct: Something Fun Before Things Get Crazy

Something I thought would be fun as the season is winding down and the Hot Stove League is weeks away.

We have no idea if the Twins 2020 roster will be influenced by major trades or major and minor additions. But one thing I have always found to be great fun is just projecting the future based on what is on hand. We've all done it! Whether online at TD or paper, we have all written talked, speculated on what we'd like to see and proposed what could be. So we are speaking about the next 2-4 years, to keep it real and relevant.

I think this could be fun..,hope you agree..and hope you will play along.

This is NOT about a 6yr contract to so and so. It's about speculation and fun. Only 4 simple rules:

1] We are speaking about players currently on roster, under control, or possible re-signings

2] We are talking about milb talent within the system currently.

3] Just being real, we can't expect Cruz, as an example, to be cranking out numbers at age 41.

4] The ML roster expands to 26 players beginning in 2020, but you get to pick 27, allowing for variation in 14 position players vs 13 pitchers.

Care to play?

Me:

LF: Rosario

CF: Buxton

RF: Kepler

3B: Lewis

SS: Polanco

2B: Arraez

1B: Kiriloff (also OF)

C: Garver

Bench:

Sano (DH/1B/3B)

Gordon (utility)

Adrianza (utility)

Larnach (OF/1B)

Rortvedt ©

Jeffers (C/1B?)

Rotation:

Berrios

Graterol

Odorizzi

Balazovic

Ober

Pen:

Rogers

May

Duffey

Alcala

Romero

Thorpe

Duran

Stashak

Banking on Ober finally being healthy. If he is, pushes Thorpe and Duran out of the rotation. Hate not having a LHSP, but can live with that.

Hate leaving both Smeltzer and Colina out, but I just like the future potential here more.

Your thoughts?

I think Littell has a shot at sticking in the pen too, just couldn’t fit him in

Rosario they’ll let his arb contract ride and he’ll become a free agent.

Buxton to rebuff an extension next offseason and be traded

My 2022 Roster...

Twins aren't deep with MiLB infielders, so Blankenhorn gets the last spot. Celestino is my breakout player for 2020. I thought about making Rijo the 5th SP and moving Duran to the bullpen in place of Cano. The Twins could sign Odorizzi. He would be the 3rd year of his new contract.

Starters:

LF: Larnach

CF: Buxton

RF: Kepler

1B: Sano (signed to extension beyond 2021)

2B: Arraez

3B/SS: Lewis

SS/3B: Polanco

C: Garver

DH/1B/OF: Kirilloff

Good take... I was struggling to come up with a CF/4th outfielder. My roster is heavy on the corners. I couldn’t come up w/ Celestino

I think we'll all miss someone. I forgot about Romero for the bullpen. Miranda might be my pick for last IF spot. He's kind of spun his wheels the past two seasons but he's barely 21 years old.

I almost feel bad not including Littell. I like him, just with a couple more powerful arms.

Never thought about Celestino!

Good call on Blankenhorn! I almost went with him too.

Jeffers traded? Otherwise, not sure Odo violates the rules or not, but if not, I agree with this for 2022.

Wishful thinking on my part. Jeffers is the better prospect but wouldn’t it be great if Rortverdt hit well enough at the MLB level where he would be a solid back-up. We have Garver through 2023. Rortverdt is quite a bit better vs RHP at Garver mashes LHP. That might allow us to trade Jeffers who plays a premium position for pitching without giving up Graterol or Balazovic.

As long as I am wishing … How about a 3 team deal next year at the deadline where we get a front of the rotation SP from a team that realizes they need to rebuild. We send Rosario to a contender who sends prospects to said team and we add Jeffers plus Duran.

I think that's the most likely way that Rosario gets dealt, actually.

Aggressive with Javier. Didn't see that one coming!

Wishful thinking. I want to see the athleticism of Lewis at SS so I am hoping he pushes Polanco to 2nd. I love Arreaz but it would not be a bad thing to have quality excess become trade capital. Javier coming on and taking over at 3B would be a great scenario for this team. We would have three guys capable of playing SS for our infield. We go from a relatively weak infield defense to it being a plus and that should be a darn good hitting infield. Plus, it gives us a good trade chip.

Love it! Maybe a tad aggressive 2021, but like your thoughts. I've often thought about Wander continuing to fill out and play 3B down the road.
