iPhone or Android?

I stick with Apple products because my trust in Google's data mining practices have been swirling down the drain for years.

But there are lots of good Android products out there, I simply no longer trust Google.

Apple has divested itself from advertising (years ago, actually), so they have no real interest in our data beyond improving their own products, which means they don't sell our data.

Neither company is above reproach with their ethics around end user data, though I do agree that Google is worse...

I have a Galaxy S10 for the record... good phone.

Yeah Google gets weird with their push notifications and especially Google maps... It reminds me on my ride home I didn't make a stop at the liquor store and says there are other options on the way home.

um... says a lot there Van...

This may be a conspiracy theory with nothing behind it, but I swear companies send out updates that start to affect your older phone. I've got a Google pixel 2, had it for coming up on 2 years. Once that 2 year anniversary comes up, like clockwork, the phone starts acting up. Battery life goes to hell, some apps cause the phone to crash. It's happened with every Android smart phone I've owned...

Nothing will ever be as bad as the early Samsung Galaxy phones with battery life. I had to charge that sucker 3x a day at the bitter end.

It's probably a bit of both actually... path after patch after patch has been known to affect things worse than an up to date clean build in a lot of software platforms.

Apple's use of end user data is miles better than Google; they shouldn't be in the same conversation.

But both are less than they should be.

And that's just it. The speed-ups of older hardware isn't some benevolent action by Apple; it's a concentrated effort to re-work their code base and because they support (and sell) older phones, an iPhone will last longer than your average Android device.

But without that support (or care), you'll only get degradation.

People think computer hardware "just runs forever" but that isn't the actual case. Over time, thermal dynamics become a problem as dust and crap settle on your components. This ruins the efficiency of the device, which leads to hardware throttling (or, in the case of bad hardware management, failure).

In a pure vacuum, yes, your CPU/GPU will probably run forever (but NOT your memory or storage, those fail in time). The problem is that our air is not a vacuum and points of failure are often from contaminants around us, settling on your hardware over long periods of time.

Immersion cooling, easy peasy, who needs to try to cool a vacuum anyways?

Verizon has a pretty sweet black Friday deal going on. Get a new iPad for $100 with the purchase of a new iPhone... Guess I'm joining the apple family now.
