Jorge Alcala Coming Up?

Stewart needs to go as well.

And I probably do not disagree that at the end of the season he is removed from the 40-man.   But good god, he isn't the 40th guy they have on the roster by a long shot.

Before you DFA Stewart I think you could look at finding a team that would be willing to make a minor deal for him, a low level prospect or cash in a trade, and give him a new team.

No MLB trades allowed right now, though, so you can't get him off the roster via trade until after the World Series.

That is the surprise. If he's good enough to add on Sep. 13, surely he was good enough to add on Sep. 1st like Graterol.

Although I guess Cleveland just called up a reliever too...

That's not necessarily true. On September 1st and September 3rd (after AAA season), they thought that Dyson would be available... I mean, it's silly to have 14 relievers on the roster in September, but since they decided that, and now with the Dyson move, they wanted another arm, especially with 3 games in less than 30 hours when two of those games are essentially bullpen games. They kept Alcala in Ft. Myers since the end of the season for this scenario.

Jorge Alcala without having thrown a pitch at the MLB level is likely better than Stewart, Hildenberger and maybe Thorpe. He could have been added instead of them.

Fox Sports reports at top of today's doubleheader that Baldelli states Dyson's condition is being "re-assessed."  Chances of a contribution from him for remainder of this season are fading.

Well, I did not mean trading him now.   Rather,  in the next offseason in a minor deal.   I am not even claiming he can be dealt, just that he is the only guy on the bottom of our 40man that has any potential of at least being part of a cash deal.

Dyson has nothing to do with it. Judging by this move, they were apparently prepared to cut Diplan and add Alcala after the season anyway. No real point in waiting to do it, once rosters expanded.

Just go with Stewart at this point. He's done as a Twin.

He'd also be my choice never mind that in 40-man roster decisions, teams usually try to swap pitcher-for-pitcher and hitter-for-hitter to maintain a sort of balance (though this late in the season before the annual offseason 40-man purge, it probably doesn't matter as much).

Got it. But by this point, every team knows he's going on waivers by November. I guess you might find someone who wants to give a little something to essentially jump ahead in the waiver priority list, but the emphasis would be on "little." :) Probably not enough to worry about from the Twins perspective, if they think there is a better use of the spot (although I agree, I suspect there isn't right now).

Uhhh... according to who? he's been better out of the pen, but he's only been a reliever for a month.

Maybe... we don't know that... Hildberger put up just as good of AAA numbers in August/Sept as Alcala. Thorpe has been good as a starter in AA and in AAA (and shown some good stuff in MLB)...

It's the same with Kirilloff... is he a better prospect than Wade or LaMarre or Miller? Of course... is he better for the team right now? No way of knowing that.

Stewart can still hold value. He, they went the whole season with Gonsalves not contributing. The Twuns will probably need 6-8 spots at the msot on the 40-man, with any otehr changes happening if they sign a free agent. They need to make hard choices on Cron and Perez. But will lose Castro, Schoop, Pineda, Gibson, Odorizzi and Romo for sure. Throw in a couple of outfielders, thoughts on people like Hildenberger. The Twins are probably sitting pretty good. Compete in 2020? I don't know, lots of youth.

Chances of Diplan being claimed are probably slim, so the Twins will jsut be able to stash him in the minors for another season.

Cash considerations.   There is a solid chance that a team would give up the minimum cash value in a trade and Stewart would be lucky to have a team be interested in him in that situation.

I think a change of scenery would be good for Kohl and would extend his professional baseball career as a AAAA level type pitcher.
