Game Thread: Twins @ Blue Jays, 5/8/19, 6:07 CT

The Minnesota Twins look to sweep the Blue Jays in their three game series north of the boarder, and look to take home the season series win 4-3 with a win tonight. Kyle Gibson will look to bounce back after a rough outing, and the pitching staff will look to throw a third straight shutout. Vlad Guerrero Jr. has been given the day off from the Blue Jays lineup after struggling to get going in his first go around in the show.

The Pitchers:

Kyle Gibson (2-1, 4.68 ERA, 29 K's) vs Trent Thorton (0-3, 4.08 ERA, 38 K's)

The Twins lost 6-5 in Gibson's first go around against the Blue Jays. Gibson threw 5.1 innings, giving up 4 runs on 4 hits. He also walked three hitters, while striking out six. That was when Gibson was battling back from E-coli, and should start to show signs from last years breakout being farther removed from the illness. Hopefully the defense helps him out more tonight than in his last start. Trent Thorton was the only Blue Jay losing pitcher in Minnesota, managing to go 4.2 innings. He also gave up four runs on six hits, but only struck out three Minnesota Twins. Thorton is striking out nearly 10 hitters per nine innings pitched, but is allowing almost a homer and a half. Twins hitters will need to jump on Thorton early in the count.

The Lineups:

Twins

RF Max Kepler L
SS J. Polanco S
DH Nelson Cruz R
LF E. Rosario L
1B C.J. Cron R
3B M. Gonzalez S
C Mitch Garver R
2B J. Schoop R
CF Byron Buxton R

Blue Jays

2B Eric Sogard L
SS F. Galvis S
CF R. Grichuk R
DH Justin Smoak S
1B Rowdy Tellez L
LF B. McKinney L
3B B. Drury R
RF S. Brito L
C Luke Maile R

The Twins are going with their best lineup that the current roster is able to put on the field. Mitch Garver is one of the best hitting catchers in baseball, and this lineup doesn't feature Ehire Adrianza, the only hitter that makes me eek when I see a Twins hitter at the plate. There is not an easy out in this lineup. No Twin has had more than three AB's against Thorton, so career stats are very irrelevant. Justin Smoak is the only Toronto hitter with great success off of Gibson, going 4-15, including four runners driven in. As previously mentioned, the Blue Jay's lineup lacks Vlad Guerrero Jr. which makes sense. The top prospect has struggled to adjust to the show, and an off day never hurt anyone to clear their mind.

Mill's Moments

1. Addison Reed Rehabbing

Addison Reed was very good through 20 or so innings last year, before seeming to wear out. This is not a surprise as Paul Molitor seemed to send him out to the mount in every high leverage situation early in the year. However, many fans seemed to have written off Reed. If he is able to bounceback to the pitcher we saw in the first 20 innings in 2018 it will be a very welcomed addition to the Minnesota Twins pen. He worked a scoreless inning in last nights game at AAA Rochester. I think it makes sense to give him at least 15 days in AAA ball before rushing him back.

2. Kohl Stewart Saturday?

Kohl Stewart only threw two innings in last nights game before being relieved by aforementioned Addison Reed. Stewart struck out five hitters in his six out performance. This seems to point to him being one of the starters on Saturday's double header, more than likely as the 26th man. He seems to be option #6 on the starting depth chart, as he pitched a respectable performance against his hometown Astros earlier in the year. He will have an easier task on Saturday, going up against the Detroit Tigers.

This Day in History:

1984- Kirby Puckett collects four singles in his first major league game, helping Minnesota beat the Angels, 5-0. The 24 year-old Twins' rookie, a future Hall of Famer, will finish his 12-year major league career with a lifetime .318 batting average. (via Nationalpastime

Pick to Click: C.J Cron is going yard today, me thinks.

Go Twins!!!

Thanks MillDaddy! I was musing about the Twins' best lineup and perhaps it would include both Garver and Castro, at least right now. Mitch has played a few games at first and Cron currently is currently sporting a .206 BA, with a .684 OPS. I realize Castro is probably out until the team gets home on Friday.

BTW, I'm glad there isn't a home game today. I swear I saw a couple snow flakes in the constant rain, the wind is strong out of the east and it is miserable outside. The weather can't help but be better by Friday.

Getaway night games are a real dick move.

Interesting comment. Takes me back about fifty years to when I was still dating... struck out a lot if we want to continue the baseball talk.

I thought it was only an issue if there was a game to be played the next day?

If they played in Oakland or something tomorrow night, then yeah. But the Twins have the day off tomorrow (I think there's a double-header in Detroit over the weekend right?) and a short flight to Detroit so it doesn't seem too terrible.

Go Twins. Nice to see the "A" lineup in there. They don't lose many when they have this team on the field.

Would be nice to see Gibby work faster than his normal molasses-level rate tonight. He can be painful to watch when he's slow.

The Twins are home for the weekend vs. the Motor City kitties.

Bad result from Cruz there.

Eddie getting the job done at least. Nice.
