Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted May 28, 2019 Posted May 28, 2019 Russo Radio was on with PA today. Brief synopsis from the interview: Agents in the league are advising their clients to avoid Minnesota after the failed Kessel trade. Could kill us in free agency. Zucker is fully aware that Fenton is trying to trade him and has accepted he's gone. Fenton doesn't have a plan, per se, to acquire position needs. Just throwing a lot of stuff at the wall and seeing what sticks.
Mr. Brooks Verified Member Posted May 28, 2019 Posted May 28, 2019 Ownership is the problem. This is what you get when you artificially limit your GM search before it even starts, saying a guy won't even interview if he disagrees with the owner's vision.

Leipold can't accept that their contention window is closed and refuses to rebuild. The next few years are going to be brutal if they don't trade their current assets and start over.

Pardon My Dinger Verified Member Posted July 2, 2019 Posted July 2, 2019 How bout this Fenton guy, huh? Spare parts, that guy.
Pardon My Dinger Verified Member Posted July 2, 2019 Posted July 2, 2019 Five years for a tiny, left handed 31-year old. Oh, and another former predator, which seems to be the only type of player he has any comfort level with.

Oh, and another former predator, which seems to be the only type of player he has any comfort level with. They only had 4 albatross contracts on the books before... Might as well add a 5th! Fenton also kindly offered him a full no trade clause. Because why not?

So we're going to lose another cheap young player in 2 years because of this.
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted July 2, 2019 Posted July 2, 2019 Fenton describes Zuc as a lizard??

Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted July 2, 2019 Posted July 2, 2019 Huh? Is Paul Fenton really Meatsauce?Nah... But he might be David Kahn. I can't shake that comparison. Two absolutely clueless front office people

Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2019 Posted July 30, 2019 Encouraging news! His one season with the team was a total disaster. There was no plan in place to get better, and if Russo's reports were accurate, free agents avoided coming here. He had to go.
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2019 Posted July 30, 2019 Now they need a GM who will stand up to ownership and deliver the cold hard reality... This team is in dire need of a full rebuild.

Multiple front office people dreaded coming into work every day. Fenton was forcing Boudreau to play certain line combos and minutes, Craig Leopold was literally holding his hand during the draft and free agency, and on and on.

This is why you don't hire yes men for that role... I place the blame squarely on Leipold. He was the one that stopped interviewing candidates that disagreed with his take they were a tweak or 2 away from making the playoffs.

In fact I predicted this, in this forum, moments after he fired Fletcher, when he said in his press conference that he wouldn't hire anyone who disagreed with where this team was. The next hire will not fare any better.
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2019 Posted July 30, 2019 I listened to Russo's interview with Barreiro earlier this afternoon. It sounded worse than I could have imagined.
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted August 3, 2019 Posted August 3, 2019 Incredible work by Russo. Must read.
Mr. Brooks Verified Member Posted August 3, 2019 Posted August 3, 2019 I place little blame on an incompetent person behind assigned to a job that's well above their capabilities. The vast majority of the blame falls on Craig Leopold. How could you not vet out this level if incompetence before you hire him? The guy literally didn't even know the rules of the CBA!
Hosken Bombo Disco Community Moderator Posted August 3, 2019 Posted August 3, 2019 Then again, how often do we see people in Leipold’s position double down and not consider that they are at fault? Far too often, nowadays.
Mr. Brooks Verified Member Posted August 3, 2019 Posted August 3, 2019 Then again, how often do we see people in Leipold’s position double down and not consider that they are at fault? Far too often, nowadays.Sure. I give him some credit for being able to realize he made a mistake and moving on. But, with as bad as it sounds like Fenton was, I don't see how that was reasonably avoidable.

We read at the time Leipold wanted someone who agreed with his analysis that the team was a couple tweaks away from returning to the playoffs. I'm assuming 99% of the candidates he interviewed said "Are you nuts? This is an obvious rebuild." And Fenton was the only guy who said "Sure! A couple of tweaks and this team is a Stanley cup contender!"
