Garver...my goodness, isn't it time?

Over the last 5 series and 16 games he has started 10 games catching 8 of them. I look for him to go from 50% to 60% in the last two months.

I think he has improved as a receiver and game caller this year. I also think Castro and now Wilson have been helpful to his development.

Perhaps he can improve, but Garver's pop time is second worst to Flowers this year, and his exchange time is last among catchers with 10 SB attempts against. His throws aren't real accurate. from BP fantasy article Finding Catchers to Run Against, July 20.

this might matter if anyone was trying to steal bases anymore....

I think people get hung up on stuff like this, and completely ignore how much better his offense is than the alternatives.

I'll keep asking.....how much worse does his defense have to be than Wilson for the difference in offense to matter at all? Because the offensive difference is massive, and easily measured too.

I figure Iyam classed as a dumbo here because I keep touting Bobby Wilson. But when I think of what Castro has done here, I'm hardly impressed. For his lifetime, he's batted .231, and four times he's hit under .212. How has he done throwing out stealers? And if he's such a great framer, why is it that Twins pitching staff has put up such lousy numbers his two years here?

No personal knock on him, but next year I think he'd be better off, as would the Twins, if he were a coach, maybe a playing coach, who best contribution would be mentoring Garver.

And Bobby Wilson? I think he'll retire.

You have a lot more confidence than I do about fangraphs ability to accurately measure defense at catcher.

Not necessary when a player has a black hole for a bat (.488 OPS / 29 OPS+ for Wilson) vs. a better than league average (.767 OPS/ 110 OPS+ for Garver) bat.

Well, he is not going to get better while sitting or playing DH, is he?   That's what losing teams do.  Use the last months of the season as development time at the MLB level.
