Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted February 19, 2018 Posted February 19, 2018 I subscribed today. Twins' coverage reads like local paper coverage so far... positive fluff. I will update the thread as I read. If you might subscribe, let me know. Pretty sure I get stuff if I refer you.....
Pardon My Dinger Verified Member Posted February 21, 2018 Posted February 21, 2018 The Atheltic is totally floating on a bubble, right? They can’t possibly keep hiring away the top talent from every paper/journal/blog, can they? I’m asking, clearly, as a person who would never ever pay for sports coverage/opinions.

Just curious. I pay for insider, and am a member at fangraphs. I've purchased the handbook here.

Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted February 22, 2018 Author Posted February 22, 2018 Well written article on what it's like to get traded, the effect on the players and their families. Lots of quotes. This kind of fluff I can get behind.

His goal is to provide unique content when he can.
Seth Stohs Site Manager Posted February 22, 2018 Posted February 22, 2018 And no, I haven't subscribed. Yet. Not sure if I will.

Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted February 28, 2018 Author Posted February 28, 2018 The app is very good. The writing is good. But, the Twins' writer is basically just another beat writer. The stories are good, bit I can't imagine getting anything other than pro, company line, articles from him. I like his style, but it won't be all that objective.

Wanting to ... 'make nice' ... with the fans and players as he eases himself into it? Dunno.
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted July 23, 2018 Posted July 23, 2018 Does anyone see themselves renewing their subscription when the time comes? For $60 a year I expected something.... more, frankly. I've enjoyed the occasional Eno Sarris article, and Ken Rosenthal's stuff. Unfortunately Dan Hayes does nothing different than the other Twins beat writers.

It's got a lot of content, but I am not in LOVE with it. Not sure what I want in a sports' news site, but that's not it exactly. Plus, I'm just culling out subscriptions left and right....

I signed up for it to continue to read Russo covering the Wild. All the baseball stuff is a bonus. Agree on Hayes. If there was no Russo I definitely would have never subscribed in the first place.

Inertia will prevail. Hayes's coverage of the Twins is not very compelling. If that's what I was in it for, no way. On the other hand, the Athletic writer following the Cardinals wrote a couple articles that took down their manager. It wasn't necessarily great old-fashion gumshoe journalism but in today's age, it was gutsy enough. Great stuff and great style by that writer (on phone, not gonna search, can't think of name). I also look forward to Russo and Johnny K should the Wild or Wolves ever make a run. I read Brandon's Twins commentaries, but haven't read much of anything Twins related since May or June. Ironically, the best Dozier article I've ever read was by a Dodger writer on the Athletic week or two ago, after the trade. Sub req - https://theathletic.com/470042/2018/08/13/doubt-brian-dozier-and-he-will-prove-you-wrong/(warning: language) Excerpt: '...When the Twins filtered into the lobby, they learned their hotel had no power. Frazzled front-desk staffers rushed to hand out flashlights and room keys to the traveling party. After a minute or two, heads turned as sweet sounds echoed throughout the darkened space. Brian Dozier had found the grand piano. He began to entertain. “He’s the kind of guy that breaks the ice for everybody,” said Astros reliever Ryan Pressly, who was then Dozier’s teammate. Over seven successful seasons in Minnesota, Dozier became the Twins’ clubhouse leader and their most visible player, embracing the relative spotlight. He learned Spanish to speak to his Latino teammates. He found a condo in Minneapolis’ hip North Loop neighborhood and often walked to work at nearby Target Field. He did community events, visited burgeoning breweries and relished the similarities between Southern hospitality and what locals call “Minnesota nice.”...'

Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted August 17, 2018 Author Posted August 17, 2018 I'm warming up to it, but given my lack of income, will likely not renew.....
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted September 24, 2018 Posted September 24, 2018 My renewal date is coming up in a week and I will not be keeping this service. Frankly I just didn't use it enough... My love for hockey is eroding, and Dan Hayes didn't write a piece that sticks out for the Twins.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted September 25, 2018 Author Posted September 25, 2018 The Vikings' coverage is very good, but like you, I just don't read it enough.....
