by spoiling? Or by only really liking something, and not loving it?

Sorry, was hoping to have a conversation. I can delete it.

Spoiling. I am kidding though, I saw the disclaimer and didn't read it.

Actually, Mike, I mostly agree with you. I'm not as down on the Poe story as you are, though, I thought it was a logical direction to take a character who was a hotshot pilot and now needs to play a leadership role in the new Rebellion.

I agree fully on the Finn story. There was a spark in Episode VII that he lacked in VIII. His story was far and away the weakest of the film.

Which is too bad, because the subject matter of his trip to Canto Bight was probably the most important theme of the film. It just failed to deliver as powerfully as the Rey/Luke/Kylo story, which was a bit more by the book for a Star Wars film (but masterfully executed).

I think I know what the issue is for me.

SPOILERS!

First, I don't think that every part of every story has to move the main plot.....

Second, I hate when characters don't communicate. It isn't realistic. People OVER share, they don't keep secrets from each other. It's one of the things that annoys me about The Magicians tv show.....

I don't think the Poe or Finn stories are good enough.

Leia and Han had intersting stories, and were interesting characters. Finn should be the most interesting non-Jedi character in this arc. A former storm trooper who decides the first order is evil. But, I felt like his story was tacked onto the story here. The one good point of his story was showing that eternal war between light and dark is bad for everyone, except arms dealers. Unless he is integral to the story next movie, it would have been better for him to die. A non-jedi hero for the galaxy...even the non-jedi can stand up to the first order!

I agree, however at the same time there's not a second of Luke, Rey or Ben that I would have wanted cut, I wanted more of those characters as well. I'm cool with a 3 hour movie but when they start going over 2 1/2 hours critics and fans seem to start holding it against the film for being too indulgent.

I'd guess there will be more screen time available in Episode IX without Han, Leia and likely only minimal ghost Luke. I wouldn't be surprised if we find out later that one of the auxiliary characters was saved in re-shoots after Carrie Fisher's death knowing that they were going to have a plot to fill. Finn's survival did not seem to fit. Next time I get to watch the film I'm going to pay attention to the ending to see which shots he is in and who he interacts with to see if it looks like he was only added back in in re-shot edits. Rose too.

One other thing that I've been pondering, there was ghost Yoda, but no ghost Obi Wan. I wonder if they chickened out after getting so much backlash for CGI'ing Peter Cushing into Rogue One. I'd like to see a way around that in Episode IX, maybe have Ewan McGregor do the actual acting and then just CGI him up to look more like Alec Guiness.

And another thing, I haven't seen it anywhere (though I only watched the film last night) but I'd guess Leia's death will be explained away due to a fairly large time jump? I mean the ending of the movie was showing kids, implying that they were the future of the rebellion. They're not going to have 7-year-olds flying space ships (again) and getting slaughtered by Sith Lords (again) are they?

Just watched it. I think there was some really well done parts, some really predictable parts, and a lack of character depth. I thought it was ok, but not on par with force awakens. The director and editor shouldn't do this series ever again. I really find the nostalgia distracting. The character development was so good in force awakens and rogue one, that was a really disappointing thing for me. In all the great movies like this, the characters make the movie, everytime. This wasn't a let down like episode 3, but it could have been better.

Are we going to do a spoiler thread too so we can discuss parts we liked and parts we didn't?

I liked it, and of course there were storylines that didn't stand up to others.  I feel the bar is just set to high for some in these kind of movies.  But I thoroughly enjoyed it, and will watch it many times again.

If you have some time, check out Kevin Smith's review.  He echoed a lot of my feelings, though from a more invested, and long winded point of view.

Wait, so you found the nostalgia of The Last Jedi distracting but not in The Force Awakens, where the nostalgia was seeping from every pore of the film for the final hour?

Yes. The force awakens incorporated it much more effectively. This time around, it feels forced (hehe). I just didn't feel as invested in this story for some reason. I'm sure I'll watch it many more times and maybe my thoughts will change. To me, it felt predictable and reused.

Wow, I disagree. Once TFA entered the Starkiller phase, I felt as if I could predict the film almost scene for scene.

Whereas the last hour of TLJ was a whirlwind of “WTF IS HAPPENING” moments. The film may have had flaws but predictable it was not.

The entire attitude of Luke was completely out of left field.
