In 09 Twins took on salary dumps with Pavano and Rauch. Makes ne wonder if it was a Pohlad issue or a Ryan issue.

I don't think the Twins have taken on a ~$10 mil guarantee in trade, as Madson represents. Much less the $15 mil total of Madson plus Doolittle here.

We know they are willing to add that in arb and free agency, generally (although maybe not in the pen), but it does seem like perhaps they are unwilling/unable to make that level of move/adjustment/commitment midseason, for whatever reason.

The last time a single player addition could have made a difference in the outcome of a season was  2010. They likely used their trade piece on Capps.  To get the then equivalent of a 10 million dollar player would have cost Sano.

The problem with this 'they haven't' argument is that they have a new GM and before that the team was very non-competitive for half a decade.

I remember hearing that the Twins wouldn't spend big on Int'l FA and then they did and they have kept spending. I also remember hearing endless times that the Twins wouldn't sign any significant FA starters and then they did (2x for 45-50M). The Twins will certainly spend if they have a chance at the playoffs (1.5 games out near the deadline).

huh? they've spent their allotment on IFA, not "big". I have no idea what that means. And, that allotment is tiny in the scheme of a MLB payroll.

Sano, Kepler and Polanco - People were saying that they wouldn't do that. Insisting. And then it happened.

Things change for teams. Just because the team was run one way a decade ago (getting close to that long since they were competitive) doesn't mean that it will be the same with a new GM from outside of the organization.

They took on about 4-5 mil in 2010 with the 3 relievers they added, probably the only relevant comp.

Capps was only about $1.3 mil, Fuentes $1.8 (it was only 1 month), and Flores was maybe $120k? So just over $3 mil in 2010.

I double counted Rauch. And the 2010 team had little else to add outside of a top of the rotation starter. Money wasn't the block there.

But I'll keep my main point when combined with the 2009 evidence. Is this a Pohlad issue or Ryan issue?

huh? those guys were signed by the old regime (well, 2 regimes ago). And if less than $5MM is "big", well, we have a different definition of big. I can't imagine "people were saying that", since that was 8 years ago....

big would be going over allotment, or signing Cubans for big money, or getting Otani in the future.

So you are saying that the standard operating procedure of previous regimes aren't indicative of the current regime then that is exactly my overall point.

I didn't say that they were 'HUGE' signings. I said that the 'never going to happen' crowd sounded just like you. And Sano was a HUGE deal at the time. One of the largest (or the largest) signing bonus for a 16 year old at the time. Something that was not considered possible for a team that had completely ignored the high bonus int'l market at the time.
