The Red Sox call up top prospect 3B Rafael Devers to fill the glaring hole left behind by Kung Fu Panda.  He's a top 20 prospect in the game on every list, and has less than 40 PA's at AAA before getting the call. 

 

#2 on my midseason list....he good.

"I’m not counting Devers at this point,” Dombrowski said on July 14. “We again think Rafael Devers is going to be a very, very good player. But I don't want to put it on his back that we're counting on him in a pennant race.”

 

Sounds very similar to Falvey's quotes 1 start before getting the call to Minnesota.

I don't think it's that much of a stretch to believe the Red Sox called him up earlier than they planned.

 

They're in freefall right now losing 10 out of their last 15 or so. Lost out on the best(?) 3B rental to their division rival, and they're getting below replacement value from that position all season long.

 

Who knows, maybe they're still in the market for another rental 3B like the Eduardos (Nunez and Escobar)

Sure, but just because it's earlier than planned, doesn't necessarily mean that they are definitely rushing him.

It could turn out that he's ready and their initial plan was more conservative than necessary.

From reports I heard, there were concerns with his fielding as he has progressed. Probably something the Red Sox would have preferred to tighten up before promoting. He did have some good games offensively.

 

He was rushed, but it's not necessarily a bad thing. Kid has talent, the Red Sox have a clear need at his position, it is worth a shot. He may rise to the occasion.

Scary situation for our old friend Wilson Ramos last night. He was struck in the head by a broken bat and received 6 staples to fix the laceration.

I don't get this. I've watched dozens of his games and been impressed with his fielding, so nothing has stood out on the negative, and on the other side, it's actually been impressive enough to note.

 

I can't find it now, but it was specifically about the change from AA to AAA and being faster for him. I wouldn't have thought it would be that big of a change.

 

The reason it was noted is that he is a good fielder, so it was a notable (albeit probably brief) slip.

Annnd the most predictable trade happened. Red Sox get insurance for Devers by acquiring old friend Eduardo Nunez.

In other old friend news, the Brewers acquired Anthony Swarzak to shore up their bullpen. He is having the best season of his career after signing a minor league deal with the White Sox.

Finally, old friend Franky Liriano is potentially heading to the Royals, who are gearing up for one last run with their core players.

I like what the Royals are doing, push it all in for one last run. They'll have a long rebuild either way, might as well go down in a blaze of glory.

Agreed. And it's only going to help out the Twins in the near future because that rebuild is going to be painful for them. They're emptying the cupboards in the minors, and they may be able to sign only 1-2 out of the 6 or so players entering FA.

Pat Neshek has a new home in Colorado. He was acquired for 3 prospects. The highest ranking prospect the Rockies sent over was ranked #21 in their organization. Cheap price.

I just watched good ol Kurt Suzuki sky a throw into LF trying to catch a runner stealing 3rd. 1-0 Phillies. Dude also stole 2nd. I like KS as a person, and all the more so as a Brave.

Congratulations to Adrian Beltre who joined the 3,000 hit club! He's never been one that people would call the best player in the MLB, but he's been consistently good for nearly 20 years... He should be a first ballot HOFer.

Here's a thought. 3k has always been the magic number for an automatic berth into the HOF. Will that number go by the waste side sooner than later?

Here's the career hits list for active players. Pujols is the closest to achieving this number at 2,914. The rest, honestly aren't close. Maybe 2,500 will be the new magic number in the future?

Robinson Cano will almost definitely get there first. He's already got 2311 hits, and he's 34 years old.
