That's a shame, I loved his work.  Audioslave, his remake of Billy Jean, Soundgarden.....the dude was super talented.

This news is the worst. Cornell's music has been a big part of my life for nearly 30 years. As a youngster he was a great inspiration/influence to me as a vocalist and song writer that helped me craft my own identity as a musician.

 

This is a day I will never forget, but I sure wish I could.

23 years ago Kurt Cobain died and since then he has become a symbol for the disaffected youth - then and now. I have no problem with Nirvana, I like a handful of their songs. It's a phenomenon that was lost on me.

 

Today/last night I lost my Kurt Cobain from that era. It's a blow, especially because there was more good stuff to come from Cornell, whether it be Soundgarden or solo work.

 

Compared to the bands from Seattle or that fit that genre, Soundgarden was the most innovative. They would do alternative tuning, like Drop D, and they had more complicated time signatures than any band of their genre in that era. Obviously it is a group effort, but Chris Cornell was the main song writer.

 

The music could be gloomy, melancholy or straight faced rock. Most of it was amazing.

 

Chris Cornell was as good as a vocalist as any band would want, but he was the main composer as well.

 

I was looking forward to a new Soundgarden recording, but now I hope not. It might be pieced together like **** to make a dollar or two.

 

I will be feeling the pain of Chris Cornell's loss for many days. It's too painful too listen to his music.

From that era?  Do you count The Foo Fighters?

 

I wouldn't but their key member was born out of that era and they are (inarguably IMO) the best rock band of the last 20 years.

It sounds like this could have been preventable, which is the worst.... The family believes he didn't know what he was doing as a result of taking too much Ativan... Prescription drugs are a scary thing.

Alice in Chains is still around. Some of their new songs - Hollow, Stone, Your Decision - holds up but the albums as a whole aren't quite up there. But they are a great band and Cantrell is massively underrated.

I love (old) Alice in Chains. I just can't count them without Staley.

A great band from that region that is still kicking out the Jams is the Melvins. They were astronomically influential to Nirvana and to a lesser extent Soundgarden. Mark Lanegan (screaming trees) is an awesome solo artist these days.

"Dirt" is an epic album. Facelift has it's moments. I think Staley was too involved with his addiction after those two albums. They put out 2, maybe 3 albums before he died. They have a few since. Maybe there are a few songs that are okay, but it is a different band.

 

No disrespect to Cantrell, he can write a good song and sing a bit. The harmonies always lifted Alice in Chains to another level.

I loved Jar of Flies (although I suppose it was an EP and not an album) and Alice in Chains (their third album) was strong although not as good as Dirt.

Yeah, I agree. Maybe. Euphoria is why people get high. One can suppose, but maybe that's not correct and Staley was clean at the time. I don't know.

 

Chemical abuse keeps growing on a person and will swallow them whole. It's hard to know what stage he was in when those albums were recorded.

Jar of Flies was good. The Album with the Dog with 3 legs on the cover. I wasn't too keen on it.

Screaming Trees are one of my favorite bands of all time.

 

Though it's the "next" NW generation: I love that Built to spill and Modest mouse still put out great music. Combined I have seen them at least 40 times now in about 15 different states.

A tear dropped my eye on this one.
