Is Nick Franklin a better fit for the 25th man than Danny Santana?

I don't think so.

 

Neither does much, but I would personally keep Santana if the small chance he recaptures two years ago or taps more into his tools.

 

Franklin has just never hit and provides even worse d than Santana.

I think he has more upside but probably only if he could really play shortstop. He had an solid OPS of .771 last year but the sample was too small. He is a little younger. He had a better prospect pedigree.

 

Does that give him enough additional upside to try to pass Santana through waivers and make a claim?

Considering Santana has been one of the worst players in baseball two straight years, I would say "likely"

Santana had a babip over .400 in 2014. Hoping for that again is less likely then Mauer hitting 30 HR again.

He's probably not a .300 babip either, and his iso is over .050 lower last two seasons.

Probably. I don't especially care if they keep him. I'd just keep him over Franklin.

I can't tell from reading your response whether you think the Twins should claim Franklin. Perhaps your not interested in that conversation.

Or maybe Jimmy Rollins over Danny Santana. It would bring the veteran leadership the team needs since Mauer has no ability to be a leader at all.

I definitely think they should pick up Franklin, as he's a better option then Santana and prob Escobar as well.

Not sure that Santana will have a roster spot when Ehire Adrianza comes off the DL.  I'd take Adrianza over Franklin for sure.

I do agree with Thrylos but it is an opportunity to add some depth with an outside chance of upside. They DFA Santana and maybe he stays in the organization. When Adrianza is ready and assuming everyone else is healthy, they can DFA Franklin and maybe he stays in the organization.

 

I don't like it for the players but some teams use the 25th spot by cycling through players on waivers. No team is in better position to use this strategy than the Twins.
