Dorsey: Minor League in Name Only

Nice article by David Dorsey of the Fort Myers News Press. If you aren't quite convinced you should make the trip to ST, this might do it for you. It's not just the big leagues practicing and playing. Watching the action at the backfields are such an up close and personal experience. I like watching the major leaguers practice, too, but there are fences and security to keep you from getting too close. There's a ... purity to the game? ... watching 'the kids' go about their work.

I know I'm in the minority but I'd much rather watch the minor leaguers for pretty much the reasons that Dave laid out! Easy access, future stars but it also puts a face to the what many know as just a name.  I can't tell you how many of the minor leaguers I've seen talk and carry on conversations with fans from the Cedar Rapids, Ft Myers or Chattanooga area that they've got to know from their times there.  Then there is always the added bonus of catching some MLBers in camp or coming by the backfields to see some of their friends.  Case in point, Miguel Sano watching the Cedar Rapids game on Saturday watching his friends and countrymen Ariel Montesino and Lewin Diaz, he also gave them a crap load of batting gloves.

yeah, minors are cool.  Just watching them play and being literally 20 feet from them is pretty neat.

I was with Bob Sacramento and AshburryJohn on Saturday, got to watch Rortvedt make a very nice play and see all his peer's reaction to it (as well as a subtle showboat reaction that his friends found amusing)...  You don't see their personalities at the major league level.

You mean when Rortvedt did this to the pitchers watching from behind?

So I was accused of helping Dorsey blow the best kept sercet in town today while watching the minor"s today. I really didn't want to get interviewed, but did say I hoped no more folks did show  up.

Great article. He left out that it's a great excuse to get together with like-minded long-distance friends.

Yeah, it's great having witnesses to one's geekdom and knowing there are others who belong to the cult. :)

Oh!! Oh!! One of the photos has Chief, ChiTown, me, and Halsey in it.

Well, of course I'm in one of the photos. Every zoo has to have a zookeeper. And yes, I most definitely am the zookeeper.

That would be a textbook example of an inmate running the asylum! ;)
