The casinos will buy up the majority of the corporate ticketing. Putting a high roller in a suite is just one more perk for them.

 

I have flip flopped on this in my mind.....yes, great perk, Yes, pulling them off the floor for 5 hours isn't a great idea. Plus, suites are pretty big, will they just have a dude and 2-3 others in them all the time? I can't decide how I feel about what casinos will do...

Legalized sports gambing across the country would be a MASSIVE growth industry.

Not sure about massive, gambling in general has been on the decline. But growth across the country would not necessarily be good for Vegas specifically. There is a need to diversify the region.

The NFL team will be fine.

They only have to sell 8 games per year, and football is extremely popular.

I'd be much more worried about the nhl. They have to sell 41 games of hockey in the desert per year, and it's a niche sport.

NFL tickets as part of a travel/casino package is appealing to many because nearly everyone in America is at least a casual nfl fan. Can't say the same about hockey. There just aren't many casual hockey fans.

Actually I don't think they'll have an issue selling out a hockey arena. They've already pre-sold 13k season tickets before an expansion team was announced. The last 2-5k tickets shouldn't be that hard to sell.... Either to the casinos themselves, or walk up tourists.

Phoenix, the 6th largest metro area in the country, once said much the same thing.  Now, they screwed up where they put their rink, but still.  Non-hockey markets typically struggle and Vegas isn't a natural hockey market.

 

I would guess a good first 5 years, then things get dicey.

The arena is on the strip. They will be able to fill it every night.

 

For petes sake they manage to sell out Britney Spears shows 6 nights a week, they can sell tickets to guys in vegas to watch hockey.

It's certainly possible that people from Oakland/LA fly to watch a game... But man, that'd be an expensive weekend. $100 minimum for the flight, probably $100 per ticket, plus hotel, gambling, food, etc.

That's really not that much money or time

needed, plenty of people from LA already goto Vegas once a month anyways. And $300-$500 for a fun weekend is something a majority of their fans can afford. It's only 8 games a season anyways.

In the short term I think you will see a decent bump in legal sports betting in Vegas bc of the two new teams.

I wonder how the local teams are going to impact sports gambling. Generally local teams/games are off the board, right (I'm thinking UNLV)? Or has that changed recently?

It's a good point, we'll see.  Hockey is a little bit of a niche sport outside of a few markets.  And our 51st state to the north of course.

That's a very good point. The buzz will be there initially, but if they can't put together a contending hockey team, something the Coyotes have always had trouble doing, things could very well get dicey.

Both professional teams will remain "on" the board.

 

Also it's hard to point shave in the NFL and almost impossible in the NHL.

Visiting teams will always bring in a large attendance as well, like I definitely will go every year for a wild game.

 

Also the "well if they suck attendance could drop" is true about 95% of pro teams period. See: Minnesota Twins and their fancy new stadium and even the Vikes failing to sell out their last game.

Most of the 6,000 people at a Hawks v Coyotes game are Hawks fans.  But they don't bring "large" attendances.  Larger than usual perhaps, but not enough for a stable market.

 

And there is a big difference between selling out a baseball stadium or football stadium versus hockey.  You should look up attendance for the Coyotes.  It ain't pretty.

I'm just saying the NHL has a number of floundering teams in non-hockey markets.  I dislike the entire idea of expansion in that league.

Sharrif Floyd? I thought his career was in doubt.

 

I might be interested but it looks like Sherman only has two years left on his deal with two years of 13M+ cap hits. That's pretty pricey.
