The bottom line though is that we're DFAing players who most feel have potential or a higher ceiling for guys who either conflict with, or don't represent upgrades to already on the roster.

Barring some news out of spring training camp, Vielma's bat is not ready. It may never be ready, but he won't turn 23 until during the season, so he deserves more seasoning. I do want to watch him for signs that I've underestimated him.

Yeah, and what happens if Vielma posts a .400 OPS?

 

You've just burned an option, retarded the guy's development a bit (as he'd be on the bench a lot instead of playing), and you're right back to the problem of not having an adequate defensive shortstop on the roster.
