Still, he found some success with the Miracle, so the timing is surprising. I'm surprised about Onas Farfan. The left-hander was solid in the GCL in his return from Tommy John surgery. Figured he would at least get a chance to go somewhere this year. Manuel Guzman was a favorite of mine after seeing him last spring. He was hurt a ton last year and frankly didn't play well when healthy. Luis Martinez is fast, but he just couldn't hit much at all. And, I was a big Tyree Davis fan. The Compton native is one of the best athletes in the organization. He was like 6-3, 205, could run like the wind. And while his numbers didn't show (in three seasons in the GCL), there were a lot that thought he was making some strides.
Thrylos Old-Timey Member Posted January 13, 2017 Posted January 13, 2017 I cannot see any of those as surprises. CK Irby maybe, but he was a 24 year old reliever in Cedar Rapids. All older players mostly in lower levels of the organization. Non-prospects. I expect another dozen or so cuts before the camp breaks as well.

I have 17 guys that I think could be released after spring training, particularly if they don't start at a certain level. I have another dozen that could be after EST if they don't get to CR before then. That's the unfortunate business side of the game. Irby was pretty solid in Cedar Rapids in April and May but then got hurt again and finally recovered.

Seems to me there's still a lot of previous-management's team-favorite "dead weight" populating various rosters system-wide...

Seth Stohs Site Manager Posted January 16, 2017 Author Posted January 16, 2017 This one surprised me a little this morning. The Twins released RHP Sam Gibbons. He had a difficult 2016, but he was very good in 2017. From his Facebook page: "Nothing can prepare you for the phone call that you never want to receive. Sadly I received it over the weekend, letting me know that I had been released by the Minnesota Twins."
Seth Stohs Site Manager Posted January 18, 2017 Author Posted January 18, 2017 Per Baseball America, Daniel Martinez was also released.
Thrylos Old-Timey Member Posted January 18, 2017 Posted January 18, 2017 Per Baseball America, Daniel Martinez was also released. Struggling at the GCL as a 22 year old, that one was to be expected...
Seth Stohs Site Manager Posted January 18, 2017 Author Posted January 18, 2017 Yup, not a surprise. He was one of 4-5 pitchers that the Twins signed AFTER the draft. Martinez struggled in the GCL. The Others:Garrett Kelly (Wake Forest) had ups and downs in the GCL, but he just started pitching a couple years ago and hits 96. Zach Strecker (Kentucky) is a good innings-eater. Bo Hellquist (Minnesota-Duluth) pitched well in the GCL. Tyler Fox (Nebraska-Omaha) did pretty well too. Brady Anderson (FGCU) pitched well in the GCL and then did alright in Cedar Rapids too.

Were those other guys also released, or were they just also signed AFTER the draft?

Thrylos Old-Timey Member Posted January 24, 2017 Posted January 24, 2017 The Twins brought back RHP Yohan Pino, after spending the last 2 seasons in the KC Organization and the KBO (not with much success as a matter of fact.)
