2017 Offseason Blueprint #1

Meyer was a really good prospect, and he still could be in line to become a good pitcher. He has never been in Glasnow's league, at least as a prospect.

Glasnow was the MILB pitcher of the year in 2014.  He has averaged 9+ strikeouts per 9 innings thus far in his limited MLB career.  Definitely a staff uplift moving forward

You are not getting a pitcher like Glasnow in trade from a club with a limited budget without giving up more than he is worth. I am all for trading Dozier for close to major league ready starting pitching(Urias?). I like Santiago a lot more than Gibson who to me is a #5 starter. I would start 2017 with Murphy and Centino at catcher and Turner and Garver at AAA. Promote quickly if they show they are ready.

Grossman is fine as a 4th outfielder to start, maybe if Rosario fails again a short term fix. Have hope that Granite will evolve and be here in 2018. Would get rid of most of the relievers keeping only for sure Chaigos and Rogers and possibly Pressly. Here is where I would promote freely and give the kids a chance, we will need them by 2018.

After dumping a bunch of marginal prospects we should have plenty of room on the 40 man to protect anyone we think has a decent chance.

Stuart Turner batted .686 in AA as a 24 year old. As a (cherry-picked) comparison Pedro Florimon batted .741 at the same level at the same age.

Garver has done better but he's awfully old.

I would be shocked if the next mainstay at catcher is in the Twins system right now.

Completely agree on your take on Turner. He's Drew Butera all over again.

I would not yet rule out Murphy or Garver but I think the best bet for a long term solution in the system is Ben Rortvedt. That is a few years out though.

I wish we knew who Murphy was, really. By reputation, he's a very solid catch and throw guy. His milb numbers were solid enough, and he hit solid for the Yankees. If THAT is the real Murphy, I'd happily role with him and Centeno at catcher with Garver the chief challenger and first call up from Rochester, giving him more time to play daily instead of the pressure of jumping almost straight from AA. (Part of the reason I almost think I'd rather sign a milb FA type instead of anew older vet to a 1-2 year deal)

I like it. Only thing is who is the coach? If it's molly I don't know if Mauer is doing against righties only which is what he should be doing. This year will not be to compete but to build for 2018. Not sure if our coaching staff allows for this. Does falvey keep the coaching staff all season? So much is up in the air right now.

Grossman is a horrible defender. He should never play the OF for this team again.

And, I love that you put this out here, thanks,

Personally, I didn't get to see Grossman play enough defensively to know how bad/average he may really be. But I saw enough to at least say I wasn't impressed in an overly positive fashion. But I WAS impressed enough with his offense that I could see him as a viable 5th OF/PH/part time DH option off the bench. Though there could be other options out there in place of him, and don't laugh when I say Plouffe.

I'd like the Twins to sign a real, quality 4th OF for next season. Grossman could still have a role. But except for the "worry" Molitor would want to play Plouffe every day, how bad would it be to sign him on the cheap after a down and injury plagued season to be a bench/role player at 3B/1B/PH/DH?

We have one.  His name is Rosario.  We need a starting corner OF, though.

I get this sentiment and idea. I really do. And I get it. He has the ability to play multiple positions well and be a dangerous bat and quality OR off the bench.

But until/unless someone else emerges, Palka, Granite for example, I don't know why you'd take someone as young and talented as Rosario out of your starting lineup.

Look, I get he'll never be a big OB or high contact guy, but he hits, plays good defense, provides power and speed. and is still learning and improving. He's a very exciting and dangerous hitter down in about the 7th spot most days. I wouldn't give up on him as a starter so soon.

I get that he's our best option currently. The fact that he's the best option our 'stellar' farm system could develop for one of our starting jobs worries me. I don't think we'll ever see him have the plate disciple necessary to get to a respectable/acceptable OBP.  So far, his OBP in the majors around .292 and that's with a very good BABIP around .334.  But he can play defense respectable enough to man all spots and isn't completely embarrassing at the plate.

BTW, shocking he couldn't maintain those triples.  Who knew? ;-)
