It was a good list. No AL Central teams though. Intra-division trading isn't commong but the Twins have made moves the the Tigers and Indians in the last couple years.

It was a conscious decision this year. Given the Twins asking prices for the players they're moving, a trade to the AL Central seemed unlikely. It was unlikely that the Twins would move a multi-year deal to a division rival and that a division rival would be game to give up one or more impact prospects to the Twins.

At this point, it seems pretty clear that the big splash, if there is one, won't be Liriano. I would guess a borderline prospect at best. If there is a splash, it will be that the Twins tough bargaining position on Span, Perkins, Morneau and Willingham will pay dividends on one of them. Having said that, I am fully prepared for this trade deadline to end with a wimper, not a roar.

It doesn't scare me that the Twins are offering Span, Perkins, Liriano, or even Morneau. *I hope we can get some really good prospects for one or two of them. Of those four, Perkins may actually garner the most in trade, but would leave the Twins without a decent late-inning reliever, other than Burton.

 

But don't trade Willingham. He's the best left fielder they've had for a long, long time. He's built for Target field, and he's not costing an arm and a leg. Keep Willingham.

Point of information, please. A player with an expiring contract who is traded mid-season no longer gains a compensation pick for the team that traded for him, thus reducing the value of these part-season rentals. What is the date that determines whether they were with the team long enough to gain the pick? Opening Day? That date, whatever it is, may turn into a trading deadline even more important than July 31 from now on.
