Bryce Harper on Unwritten Rules, Changing the Culture of Baseball

  Have your boss or a teammate sit you down in the dugout and chew your ear.  Just like a boss reigning in an employee.  

This is exactly what Jeff Smith did a few years back when he was managing Sano at New Britain.

As Correa, 21, put it: "If a hitter styles after a big home run in an important part of the game, a pitcher shouldn't be allowed to drill him in the elbow with a 98 mph fastball his next at-bat. That hurts.

"If a pitcher strikes me out in the ninth inning with two outs and the tying run on second, he's going to pound his chest or point to the sky or do a fist pump, and he should. But I'm not going to throw my bat at him for that. We should be on an even playing field when it comes to showing emotion. I should be able to pimp or bat flip if I beat him in the same situation."

I have a good feeling these younger stars like Correa, Harper, Fernandez, etc. are going to change this outdated notion that showing emotion for success equals retaliation. Can't wait for a time when unwritten rules are a thing of the past.

Harper got it wrong, but Trout didn't. Trout is the classiest guy in baseball.

As much as I love Trout and respect the way he wants to play, Harper (and Carlos Correa, Bautista, etc) got it right. Players can choose to be reserved in their actions, but those that choose to show more emotion while playing this game should be allowed to do so without them getting beaned for it. Or another player on their team get beaned for it. Exceptions would be when they do something like Gomez did, which I referenced earlier. Something (not a beaning) should be done about that.
