Free Agent Pipe Dream - Matt Wieters

I would pass. I don't think he goes for a 1 or 2 year deal because of his age and position and agent. Too many teams have seen what has happened with Mauer, great value as a C, not so much at 1B (and I am a huge Mauer fan). Wieters has no value as a DH and doesn't have enough appearances at another position (also 1B, if anybody is interested).

I really don't think there is a chance he only gets a 1-2 year deal.  If that was the case I would imagine he would just take the qualifying offer and stay in Baltimore one more year.  More than likely you are looking at a 4-6 year deal worth at least $7M a year and you lose your 1st round pick.  Pretty pricey for a guy coming off injury.

He will certainly command or ask for more than $7M a yr, i am thinking minimum of 4 yrs $60 is what he will want otherwise, he will IMO take a one yr deal and hope to raise his stock next yr.

It's probably likely that the O's give him a qualifying offer and he turns it down, so he probably comes with losing the 2nd round pick as well.

But on a short term deal, he stands a reasonable chance of returning that pick when the contract is done (like Ervin Santana for the Braves).

Nobody has ever accepted a QO yet. If he doesn't get the pricey 4+ year offer he wants this winter, a 1 or possibly 2 year deal is a real possibility.

I know this is a Weiters thread but as long as the topic is catching this might be relevant. MLB trade rumors just identified three needs for the Brewers. Item 2 is trade appealing contracts and they point out Lucroy. Item 3 is identify permanent corner infield solutions.

Plouffe for Lucroy?

In addition to the doubts mentioned by others, Plouffe is only controlled for 2 more years. Why give up their only internal catching solution, for an equivalent length (and more expensive) corner infield solution?

Lucroy was just diagnosed with a concussion. I have beaten the drum to acquire him since June, but the concussion would add more risk to trading for him.

Any trade for Lucroy would have to include more than Plouffe. Since the Brewers are bad and three teams above them are going to the playoffs, I think they would want prospects--Polanco, Kepler, maybe Walker, Stewart, Gonsalves, those kind of guys.

Thank you.  People here either grossly overrate Twins players or assume the GM on the other end is an idiot.  Hey, why not include Nolasco?  Yeah.

The Brewers definitely wouldn't want other teams hand-me-downs.  The report I read:  http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/327129841.html

says it's a mild concussion, but also warned that concussions are unpredictable and recoveries vary.  Since we're rapidly approaching the off-season, I'd at least kick the tires on Lucroy.

As far as Wieters:  a 30 yr old catcher that just had ACL surgery?  I don't want to replace Suzuki that much.  I'd like to see the Twins work on a deal for MiLB catcher with an upside and rotate him with Suzuki on a regular basis.  Can't tell the worth of a backup catcher if he rarely plays.
