The Future at Third Base

1. Miguel Sano (If he stays there)

 

2. Trevor Plouffe (If he isn't traded and Sano moves)

Who is number three?

 

Hypothetically, five years (Plouffe is long gone) from now, it is decided that Sano is no longer fit to play third. He must shift over to first. Who (in our current organization) takes his spot?

 

This is a hypothetical thread trying to prove the point that the Twins have no depth at third base below the major league level. Please don't bash. I realize that in five years we will have a whole new influx of minor league talent. I'm talking right now.

Travis Blankenhorn is one possible option. He's cooled off of late, but shows potential for just having turned 19.  Maybe not in 5 years, but in 6-7 Wander Javier if he doesn't stick at SS.  But yeah, I think C next year and the next four years after that is a much bigger hole than 3B.

This reminds me of the scene in early Simpsons where there is a poker game with 5 guys and Barney jumps in with "after this case and the next case there is only one case left. Yeah, let's get more beer...."

When you say "no longer fit to play third," are you saying because he let himself go and now weighs 310 lbs? Because first or third base is where you stash those guys anyway.

This doesn't include any SS that are in the system that might outgrow that position.  I'm not saying that I expect these guys to end up being major league players though.  There could be some other guy we draft or sign next year as well.  I don't think it's a big deal yet.

This reminds me of the type of question my daughter sometimes asks. Example: Who would catch if Suzuki and Fryer and Herrmann and Pinto and Escobar and Mauer were all injured?
