Molitor on getting ejected

Heh. From yesterday's game recap:

"I got thrown out twice in one game today," Molitor said. "Home-plate umpire must not have seen the first one. I knew when I went out there it's automatic, and I just thought it was time to make a stand. I thought Dozier didn't swing and I didn't think Sano swung, and sometimes you need to make a little bit of a stand, and it seemed like the right time. I don't lose emotional control often, but I was pretty hot at the moment given the fact that we are trying to find a way to stay in the game. I got what I deserved for going out there."

There's a lot to like about Molitor.

I was happy to see him showing a little fire.  I was also happy to see him leave the field without taking 15 minutes, kicking dirt, etc.  I remember Gene Mauch throwing all the bats from the bat rack on the field one time.  Seemed a little over the top, even to a kid in junior high.

I hope the umpire gets what he deserves, too, and doesn't get another call as a replacement up here for a while.  I was listening to the Orioles radio broadcasters, and well before the Sano call they said that they thought the Orioles should appeal every single possible swing, since he seemed to think they were all crossing the plate no matter what.  They thought it was pretty entertaining.

I have been hard on Molitor in the past for getting tossed, but I think 100% he did the right thing in this case, it slows up the game and takes the closer out of his rhythm in that case.

Also his bullpen management has looked much better as of late too... Now, if he could just stop playing Robinson 4 times a week things would be great!

Good point. Plus the reality is that managers can still pull strings from the clubhouse. On that point, I think that there should be some way to prevent managers from having any input once they're ejected. Like a penalty box. You do that, you go to the box, you know, by yourself, and you feel shame, you know. And then you get free.

I don't know if that's really a problem unless the manager is some kind of control freak.

Baseball is a 162 game season that consists of "playing it by the book" the overwhelming majority of the time. The manager doesn't do a whole lot that impacts the on-field play. I'm sure most managers feel their bench crew can manage a few innings without the wheels coming off.

If the manager didn't feel that way, he'd probably hire new coaches.

Do players/managers get fined every time they are tossed?

Not automatic from what I've read, unlike other sports. Up to the commish's office depending on the severity of the incident.

I was also listening to the Orioles radio broadcast in the late innings. They said the Twins were also going after the home plate umpire pretty strong. Their quote was something like they had never seen a dugout argue and moan about every single pitch call like the Twins were doing.
