Squirrel Community Moderator Posted September 24, 2016 Posted September 24, 2016 Wasn't this a national holiday? Of course Uber isn't national, so it's a moot point ...No, Uber and Lyft were in Austin, but no more. The city tried to enforce getting background checks on their drivers, or something like that, so they left the city I protest.

Now that you mention it, I remember Van (and the rest of you) talking about this. I confess I know very little about public transportation.

The only positive from them is they don't do surge pricing when it's late at night or a big event going on. The negatives outweigh the positives though. Their apps have crashed more often than not, and they don't have enough drivers out there working for them. We really miss Uber down here.
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted September 26, 2016 Posted September 26, 2016 Happy Monday! Today is National Pancake Day! Any day with breakfast food involved is a great day. I'm a big fan of blueberry pancakes. Any other pancake combinations to try? Today is also National Dumpling Day! One of my favorite soups if I'm in the mood for Chinese... Finally, on this day in 1960, JFK and Richard Nixon settle in for the first televised Presidential debate in U.S. history. JFK won over the national audience as he was much more comfortable in front of the camera compared to Nixon. Nixon refused to wear makeup on set, and appeared nervous about the situation.
Craig Arko Old-Timey Member Posted September 26, 2016 Posted September 26, 2016 Original Pancake House 49er's are my favorite pancakes. Thin, chewy gooey, sourdough. Shou mai and potstickers, man. Did not watch that debate (was 3 years old); may watch tonight's.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted September 26, 2016 Author Posted September 26, 2016 I make these incredible Asian pancakes with veggies and sauce that I love. So good for dinner. I don't usually eat pancakes for bfast any more.....I am trying for less carbs in general (not good at it....but trying). But, at home, many Sundays the boys were growing up, I made peanut butter pancakes and bacon. Great mornings, great great mornings.

Or just put them on top once the pancakes are fresh off the griddle?
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted September 26, 2016 Author Posted September 26, 2016 Do you mix the veggies into the batter? Or just put them on top once the pancakes are fresh off the griddle? The pancakes are super thin....more like crepes, so no, the veggies are put onto half, and then the pancakes are folded over....

That, or whoever made biscuits and gravy.
Squirrel Community Moderator Posted September 26, 2016 Posted September 26, 2016 The pancake variety I like the best is aebleskiver ... the Danish pancake. You use a special pan and it makes these little round, puff pancakes. You can put a filling or them and make them plain. Plain is fine with me ... served with syrup or jam. My aunt always made them and served them with homemade raspberry syrup ... was the best!http://jessicaburns.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/IMG_9519.jpg

Do you have the raspberry syrup recipe? Or is it a family secret recipe?
Squirrel Community Moderator Posted September 26, 2016 Posted September 26, 2016 Those like tasty... Do you have the raspberry syrup recipe? Or is it a family secret recipe?I'm sure it wasn't a special recipe ... probably sugar, water, and fresh raspberries. But ... for those who don't want to go out and buy the special pan to make these, Trader Joe's has them in their freezer section with other breakfast foods. They aren't quite as good as homemade, little is, but they are quite good for frozen to microwave food.
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted September 27, 2016 Posted September 27, 2016 Today is National Voter Registration Day! I just got registered this morning.... And get out to vote for you feel is the least of two evils. Today is also National Corned Beef Hash Day! A breakfast meal my dad loves, but it never caught on with me. Today is also National Crush a Can Day! Have you ever been broke in college to collect as many beer cans as possible in order to split another case of beer? I have! Finally, on this day in 1963, the Warren Commission was released informing the public of what happened on the JFK assassination. That still doesn't stop the conspiracy theorists who think Lee Harvey Oswald didn't act alone!

One of my colleagues is coming up from Houston next week to hold a workshop for my team here. Warned her that it's now in the 50's. I expect a parka.
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted September 28, 2016 Posted September 28, 2016 Sometimes you wake up, and BIG National Holiday just gets you, you know? That's how I feel today, on National Drink Beer Day! You don't have to tell me twice to have a beer tonight! Today is also National Good Neighbor Day! So go ahead and do a good deed for your neighbor! Such as: waving hello to them, baking them a pie, having a beer with them, offer to babysit their kids, open up their mail.... The world is your oyster! Today is also National Women's Health and Fitness Day! Chi, Formerly, we need you around these parts for many years to come. So make sure you're healthy! Finally, on this day in 1928, biologist Alexander Fleming accidentally discovered Penicillin! I say accidentally because he was out on vacation, and upon his return, he finds a staphylococci culture that was sullied by mold and destroying the bacteria. Thanks to Fleming for this discovery!
Craig Arko Old-Timey Member Posted September 28, 2016 Posted September 28, 2016 Seems like those can and should be every day things. Prost!
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted September 28, 2016 Author Posted September 28, 2016 National beer and and national health and fitness.....hmmm....
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted September 28, 2016 Posted September 28, 2016 National beer and and national health and fitness.....hmmm....As they say in the olden days, "A beer a day keeps the doctor away."
Squirrel Community Moderator Posted September 28, 2016 Posted September 28, 2016 Today is also National Women's Health and Fitness Day! Chi, Formerly, we need you around these parts for many years to come. So make sure you're healthy! Well ... I do work out ... I wouldn't say a lot, but more than the average ... PT twice/week, cardio tennis 2-4 times/week (depending on schedule), tennis lesson most weeks ... plus I ride my bike to and/or from work most days, or walk it ... unless it's raining. So ... I am active, probably more than the average (I don't know what the average is so I'm making that up to make me feel good). But ... I do like to eat, good food. And I love to bake. Mostly I give away my baked goods ... but ... I do have to test for quality control. And I don't drink a lot. Just some, on social occasions, like a pub crawl. Even then ... wasn't a lot ... Craig is my witness to that.
