Actually, not such a far-fetched idea!

Thrylos Old-Timey Member Posted April 27, 2015 Posted April 27, 2015 Do you all remember when TR's first choice for a catcher was Saltalamacchia, second Pierczynski and third Suzuki? That was a bullet (or 2) dodged. Somewhat.
Hosken Bombo Disco Community Moderator Posted April 27, 2015 Posted April 27, 2015 I think that we should give Santana at least the rest of the year before we DFA him.I accept your comment at face value. We should give Ervin Santana the rest of the season. If he performs, we should invite him to spring training next year. Otherwise, you're letting these types of guys divert attention/resources/whatever from other guys like Berrios and Meyer. For example, innings pitched in spring training. What would the Dodgers or Marlins do? (besides not sign them in the first place)
biggentleben Verified Member Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 Keep it classy, Jeff Loria. Oh, wait. Keep it your usual, Loria.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 Keep it classy, Jeff Loria. Oh, wait. Keep it your usual, Loria. I don't get this. Was he supposed to keep a terrible player on the roster for some reason? This was the kind of move a team should make.
Brandon Warne Verified Member Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 Yeah I'm not sure what isn't classy about paying out the guy's contract. There's a lot of reasons to hate Loria, but this one falls flat. Hell, it was the GM who cut him after returning from paternity leave. But if you are going to keep a guy around because he just had a kid, man, you should be doing something else.

Actually, not such a far-fetched idea! Why would the Twins DFA Santana? I get that thought on Nolasco because he had one bad year and got hurt to start this year. But Santana is good and has 3 1/2 years left on the deal.

I get that thought on Nolasco because he had one bad year and got hurt to start this year. But Santana is good and has 3 1/2 years left on the deal. you are correct; Santana is here hasn't even pitched yet and gets his shot. And... he can pitch. I shouldn't have included his name. But if the Twins are going through this routine with Nolasco this time next year, however, they should really consider something like just cutting him. Even with 1+ year left. My opinion. Other teams are doing it so it's clearly not a far fetched idea.
biggentleben Verified Member Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 I don't get this. Was he supposed to keep a terrible player on the roster for some reason? This was the kind of move a team should make. Salty was on paternity leave, and on the day he returned from paternity leave, they released him. The move from a performance/financial aspect, I don't have an issue with, it's the timing.

The decision could have been made weeks ago, but to tell him on the day he returned is classless. And if you think that Loria wasn't involved in this decision, you're delusional.
Brandon Warne Verified Member Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 Again, what were they supposed to do? Wait a few days as a good will measure? The contract was the good will measure here.
Brandon Warne Verified Member Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 Yes, because I exactly meant that he should be kept around because of the kid. I'm not saying he wasn't involved, but why pin it on him? And 'weeks' ago puts us before the season started. For a decision this big and sort of crazy? You know what, nevermind.....this isn't going to go anywhere.
biggentleben Verified Member Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 I like that they just said "we have better options, it's a sunk cost, we are cutting him". Decisive. Except they didn't. They DFA'd him, meaning they have the opportunity to trade him before putting him on waivers, at which point, the team could completely be off the hook for his contract if someone grabs him off of waivers.

I didn't pin anything purely on him, but he certainly was involved in the decision, and this is right on par with his modus operandi.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 Except they didn't. He's off the MLB team, that's what matters. Whether they trade him (good for them if they can), cut him, or send him to AAA if he accepts.....good move for them.
Brandon Warne Verified Member Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 That's standard procedure. You almost never see a team cut a guy outright before running him through waivers in some form or fashion.
biggentleben Verified Member Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 That's the point, though. They're obliged through the CBA to go through those hoops and still could end up not owing a dime on his contract. I'm not sure how that is worthy of praise for the team for being willing to bite a financial bullet. If he clears waivers and they then release him, eating all the money, akin to what the Braves did with Dan Uggla, then they can be lauded for eating the contract to upgrade the team's performance. Heck, if they ate a ton of contract just to get him off the team, that's also to be lauded as many teams (I'm looking at you, Philadelphia) hang on to players because they're not willing to eat much, if any, contract in a trade. But simply starting the DFA process? That's a procedural thing, and he could still end up in AAA being paid the money by the team, and they wouldn't have saved a dime. I think there are a few here too connected to Salty because of his flirtation with the team a couple years ago and too connected with the Marlins because of their manager to come at this objectively. I'll openly admit that I like Loria like I like a scab being slowly ripped off, but outside of him in general being classless, the move on a financial basis would make sense...but I won't praise their team sacrifice until they've actually removed him from the roster by paying all or a significant portion of his salary. As of now, they're rumored to have roughly a half-dozen suitors, so it's unlikely they pay all the contract they agreed to just 18 months ago. That sort of contract manipulation is a big part of the business issues that baseball currently has.
Linus Verified Member Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 Suzuki and his $6 million this year and next is looking pretty good right about now. Everyone that clamored for the Twins to sign Salty, please raise your hands.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 Uh, it's not about saving money.....it is about realizing this is a sunk cost and he should not be on the 25 man roster, despite making real money. I don't care about if they save money or not. Is that more clear on why I am praising the move?

I have heard a LOT of praise for the team cutting the cash, which likely influenced how I read your comment. One Braves blogger has already compared it to the Dan Uggla situation, which it's not even close to equating. Hell, Uggla is the Braves' highest-paid player this season, and he's not put on their uniform for nearly a full year at this point.
RealTwinsFan357 Verified Member Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 I wanted the Twins to sign Salty, I'll admit that. I didn't want them to go over two years, the thought being if his offensive success continued for one year he could back up Pinto this year. I've always been a fan and hopes he turns it around with another team.
Kirby_waved_at_me Verified Member Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 I thought most of TD's first choice for catcher was Pinto, not Salty, AJ, or Suzuki. So, any teams out there that might take a flier on Salty now? Arizona and the White Sox are the usual suspects ...
