He had his highest ERA+ and really, do you think the AL Central is really going to hurt his numbers?

Ricky Nolasco, Jason Marquis and Mike Pelfrey say yes.

I think it was a great deal though.  Only $4 million guaranteed? It's a bargain considering the Twins routinely pay more for inferior pitchers like Pelfrey and Kevin Corriea.

I'd have a tough time putting any of the three in the same level as Floyd when he's healthy, other than Nolasco, but I understand what you mean.

The deal is what I found most impressive.  I think it's a great move for the money.

Turner, Joe Ross to #Nationals. Myers, Hanigan, Jose Castillo to #Padres. Souza, Ott, Rivera, Smith, Bauers to #Rays (Souza, Ott from Nats).

That is not the official deal, just an outline coming from a source. Competitive-balance picks also might be involved.

josh johnson headed back to padres. base expected to be a bit less than $2M with incentives that can take him back to $8M.

One would have to think the Matt Kemp trade is going to be nullified because of the results of his physical (Arthritis in both hips).

Albert Belle retired do to degenerative hip osteoarthritis at the age of 34, It looks like Kemp isn't in that dire of a predicament, but who's to say it won't get to that point in the next year or so.

I think it would be haphazard for the Padres to proceed to pull the trigger on that deal.

Justin Upton to the Padres is being reported as a done deal. Also Derek Norris from the A's to the Padres.

If so, they've added Kemp, Myers, and Upton in the OF. Who plays CF...Kemp?

Posted

Could probably make a case for any of the three to play in Center. Kemp has the most experience there, Myers is the youngest, Upton might be the most athletic/healthiest one.

I'm guessing they roll with Kemp and if he can't do it, they try Myers.

Alonso is pretty "meh", though certainly Norris is there......if they keep all those guys in the OF, maybe the Twins won't have the worst OF defense.

I'd think you'd have to give up more for Myers than just Plouffe. I'd think they would aim much, much higher.

Now SD is talking to Boston about flipping Hanigan for Wil Middlebrooks.

If anyone ever wanted proof that prospects are just that...prospects, there it is.

Rated as Boston's top prospect going into 2012. Now possibly being traded for 33 yr old Ryan Hannigan, coming off two season's of sub .230 hitting.

Keep that in mind when projecting Sano and Buxton as AL All Stars by 2017. Or by 2015, if we check posts from a couple years ago.

Man is San Diego aggressively retooling their position players.

I have to think Kemp plays CF there - it isn't a big CF and part of his issues last year (if I recall) was frustration being moved off of CF.

If someone were to ask me a week ago if Ryan Hannigan had any trade value, I would have said no.  Now he's been traded twice in a week.  Makes me wish the Twins had some of that boring, replaceable and seemingly useless defensive catcher depth they used to overstock the previous decade.  You know, guys like Rene Rivera and Drew Butera.  Rumor is, even those guys could get moved in this market.

Hanigan has a career 90 OPS+, good defensive/framing stats, and a reasonable contract ($3.5 mil each of the next two seasons).  Why wouldn't he have value?

Rene Rivera, prior to last season's 117 OPS+, had a career mark of 45.  Butera's is 42.  Big difference.

I don't have any issue with the Braves trade today.  A ton of upside in the guys acquired for a one-year rental.  The word is that the Giants would offer nearly as much individually for Chris Johnson with his control as for Upton on a one-year deal.

I think this offseason has really showed that the player with one year left isn't quite as valuable as once believed.

Agreed.  It's interesting that while a lot of free agents are getting more money than expected, some big trade targets are fetching less.
