Various reports coming out of the Dominican Republic tonight are stating that Cardinals outfielder Oscar Taveras died tonight in a car crash. Initial reports came from his agent and there have been confirmations from his family.

Taveras was a consensus Top 3 prospect in all of baseball coming into this season. The 22-year-old played in 80 games for St. Louis this year.

Incredibly sad news for baseball and certainly for the Cardinals' family.

Just awful. The kid might have had an up and down season this year, but his future was quite bright.

Baseball is a game and a good one at that, but I really feel in the dumps about Taveras and his girlfriend losing their lives in a human sense.

22 and gone. Way too young. Dreams that are now dust in the lives of his loved ones. future good memories, bad memories down the drain... the essence of life.

What sad news, what a shame, and lastly a big loss for MLB.

Well said.  A very real personal tragedy for the families of the departed, and a devastating gut punch to all baseball fans-  the kid was destined for greatness.

The loss of life is always sad, but the loss of our young is difficult at best.  My prayers for his immediate and extended family.

Awful news.  It puts what seemed like a year of bad luck with the Twins prospects in perspective.

One wonders about the good he may have been able to do for his largely impoverished country had he turned into a superstar and gotten the contract equivilant.

Terrible loss for baseball and for the Dominican Republic.

No discussion about this since the news came out, but the reports came out this week on his toxicology report, and he was roughly at a 0.29 BAC, three and a half times the legal limit in most US states.  Horrible to have yet another promising young life (two, in this case) ended by drunk driving...

I did see that.

First and foremost, there are a lot of people who have been severely injured, died, and have lost members of their family and friends because of an outside entity that was drinking and driving. For these people I feel their grief and anger about this kind of situation.

But, there is another side of the coin to that. People make mistakes, especially when they are young. I will admit, that I too have made this same mistake in my early twenties. I'm not proud of it and I am greatful no one was hurt because of it. It is, unfortunately, a learning curve of life in my estimation. Mistakes get made and we need to alter our lives to never make these kind of mistakes again... aka learn from our shortcomings.

I assume Taveras and his girlfriend were out partying and they payed the ultimate price. It is my opinion that everyone knows the dangers of drinking and driving, and since no innocent bystanders were involved, it is best to remember the good things about these individuals, instead of lecturing dead people and keeping the wound of tragic loss for their family wide open. That is just adding insult to injury.

I hope that is why there was no commentary on this until this point in time.
