Does Baltimore signing Alonso impact the Twins?

Twins Video

Just a quick question...

With Baltimore signing Pete Alonso, could this make a potential trade for Adley Rutschman more of a reality?

Rutschman is somewhat redundant to Jeffers, both roughly the same lifetime stats, both roughly the same age, both expected to make roughly the same amount of money, The main differences being Rutschman is a switch hitter though vs Jeffers being a righty and Rutschman is going into Arb2 year and Jeffers Arb 3.  Twins could keep them both fresh by platooning them. with Rutschman starting against Righties (hitting lefty) and Jeffers starting against lefties (hitting right) and then Rutschman could DH as a right-handed hitter against lefties.

As far as Baltimore is concerned, they now have a C/1B/DH triumvirate of Basallo, Alonso, Rutschman.  BUT they also have a number of potential DH quality bats in their organization making Rutschman a potential odd man out as both Basallo and Alonso both signed long term now.

Of course, we just said we would not trade Ryan or Lopez, but the Orioles are looking for another starter. I wouldn't trade either of those for a package centering on Rutschman, but overall, I just have to wonder,  is Rutschman more available now than he was 2 days ago? and would there be a fit with the Twins?

I think it makes Mountcastle expendable.  Mayo to a lesser extent.  I don’t think they trust Basallo behind the plate full time yet.  My guess is that the O’s use Adley as primary C, Basallo as a primary DH and backup both C and 1B.  Mayo will also back up both 1B and 3B with Westburg as the primary 3B.

I sure hope the Twins aren't thinking of trading for Baltimore's excess too seriously. I could see an Ober for Mayo trade to clear a little bit of cash for the Twins and boost the Oriole's pitching staff.

While I'm thinking the Twins need change and should be willing to take some gambles on a few trades or a big free agent signing, the extreme reticence of the Twins to engage in anything remotely risky or controversial shoves all blockbuster deals off the table. So we need to accept  the Manuel Margot and Jorge Lopez type deals as a ceiling. Both of those guys were fine players at one time in my opinion, just not at the level I would seek.

No, the Pete Alonso trade shouldn't impact the Twins.

Then

1. Move Wallner to !B

Call up all the trade capital plus your own draft picks and lets build on youth.

It seems to me that Baltimore signing Alonso really means that Mountcastle is available. I could see the Twins trading for Mountcastle as a RH 1B. The question is the price. Baltimore is going all in this year so trading a prospect for Mountcastle seems unlikely to be enough, but the Orioles do need starting pitching. How about a trade of Ober for Mountcastle plus a prospect?  Both are guys with some decent track record coming off a down year. We get the prospect because a starting pitcher is just worth more than a 1B.

It impacted but not in the way that was expected.  In Mets signing and moving Polanco to 1st base, it limited the options for the other 1st baseman free agents with Baltimore most likely wanting to now trade a 1st baseman.  Not that Josh Bell is an elite hitter,  he is a solid MLB hitter that hopefully will have a solid season for the Twins.
