Javier Maschrano; the rising star of Argentina

http://i58.tinypic.com/o7nbyq.jpg Javier Maschrano, famously known as Argentina's "little boss", though it was unbelievable. As he is always ready to bleed blue and white for the cause. He started his professional career 11 and half years ago, initially he played for the Under-20s in the South American Championship. He made his debut for Argentina against Uruguay. However, it was his first international appearance for his Nation, before that he used to play for the club, River Plate. Javier Masc

Twins Minor League Report (8/3): Comeback Trails

The Minnesota Twins offense exploded twenty-three hits to pound their rival White Sox on Sunday afternoon in Chicago, 16-3. Danny Santana was 5-6 and a home run shy of the cycle, while Chris Parmelee (2-2), Oswaldo Arcia (3-6), and Eric Fryer (3-6) hit back-to-back-to-back home runs in the ninth inning with the game well in hand. Arcia’s mammoth blast cleared the seating in right field, and was estimated at 452 feet, which would be the longest HR of the year at U.S. Cellular field per ESPN’s H

Twins Minor League Report (8/2): Three-Headed Monsters...

In the majors, Minnesota Twins starter Yohan Pino ran into trouble in the seventh inning, and it led to four runs and a 6-4 Chicago White Sox lead. The Twins were able to make an immediate comeback with a three fun eighth inning however, punctuated by a two-RBI double off the bat of Oswaldo Arcia. They would add an insurance run in the ninth, courtesy of Danny Santana’s fifth home run, and Glen Perkins shut the door on the White Sox to pick up his 27th save on the year.   In the minors, one af

The Unpleasant Dilemma of Joe Mauer

We did love you Joe...and now we can see why the Twins insisted on you catching. Frankly a non-power hitting first baseman at .270 just doesnt rock our world.   And now once the hottest commodity in baseball. we couldnt trade you if we wanted to. So do we just keep you on th the bench and eat one of the richest contracts in baseball? uh..yeah...We dont have a choice, now do we?

Gardy's Culture

The day has to be coming, doesn't it? This is the 4th year in a row that could be heading toward 90+ losses. For most managers or coaches in any sport, 1 or 2 poor seasons spells the end of their days with that team. Ron Gardenhire, however, has managed to keep his job during a dark time when a change is necessary. To make matters worse, much of the coaching staff has stuck around as well. One of these days, a change has to happen.   The root of the problem is a front office that is tethered to

Minor League Report (7/31): Minor Leagues With A Major Deadline

The Twins had a busy day, but not as busy as some fans had hoped. They moved Sam Fuld back to Oakland in return for the soft-tossing lefty Tommy Milone. Milone will report to AAA for now, but should be up with the Twins before the end of next week. The Twins tried hard to find a buyer for Kurt Suzuki, but finding no suitors, the Twins bought high on Suzuki themselves, signing him to a two-year $12 million dollar extension, with a vesting option for a third year. To replace Sam Fuld on the 25-man

The Wildest Mlb Trade Deadline Day I've Ever Seen

In a wild MLB Trade Deadline Day that saw David Price to Detroit, Jon Lester and Jonny Gomes to Oakland for Yoenis Cespedes, John Lackey to St. Louis for Joe Kelly, and even Stephen Drew from Boston to the Yankees, Terry Ryan and the Minnesota Twins' front office can hold their heads relatively high. They locked up All-Star catcher Kurt Suzuki for two more years at $12 million with a slick vesting option for a third year based on plate appearances, as Mike Berardino tweets.   The Twins played it

Twins And Losses Strike Back: Trade Deadline Snaps Writing Hiatus

(Originally posted on www.twinsandlosses.com) The Twins know when to Fuld them. They know when to walk away, know when to run. The Twins made moves after they convinced themselves that they were much better off than they actually were. Colabello was red hot to start the season. Gibson was putting up impressive stats for his first month. And Joe Mauer was non-existent. Well Bello cooled off, Gibson isn't the fireballer we thought, and Mauer is still M.I.A. That's not to say the Twins don't have s

September Calls And Afl Decisions

It is now time to start thinking about proper roster movements in considering the Twins in 2015 and how to best position the team for an actual productive season next year. This involves September call-ups and Arizona Fall League decisions. I submit the following:   1. Josmil Pinto and Chris Herrmann should be back up with the team. Both have now smacked AAA pitching. Hopefully for Eric Fryer's sake, the Twins will have traded Suzuki by this time. Otherwise, there is just no reason to have him a

Kernels In A Dogfight For Mwl Postseason Spot

In mid-June, after a brutal first half to their Midwest League season, the Cedar Rapids Kernels limped in to the MWL’s All-Star break with a 31-39 record, not only 14 games behind Western Division leader Kane County, but also 7.5 games behind the Burlington Bees.   The latter is important because, in the world of Class A minor league baseball, seasons are split in to two halves, with the first and second place teams in each division, each half-season, earning berths in the postseason playoff ser

Twins Minor League Report (7/29): Berrios Injured

For fans of the Twins minor league system, there were three of the organizations best pitching prospects all on the mound in one night. This is about as exciting as it gets, folks.   Rochester starter Alex Meyer had pitched five straight starts of six innings by allowing two earned runs or less. New Britain starter Jose Berrios was making his fourth start at Double-A and he combined to pitch 13 innings of two-run ball in his last two starts. Lewis Thorpe has been showing signs of improvement eve

Glen Perkins: My Dead Horse

My article last week suggesting that the Twins trade Glen Perkins (for the right offer) is one of the most read things I've written. Although there were only a handful of comments at Twins Fan From Afar, over here at TwinsDaily there are nearly 200 comments (most of them well thought out). MLBTradeRumors also linked to the article, and it ran in the Star Tribune. In other words, more than the usual 5 found this article.   I don't have anything to compare with for this week, so I'm going to beat

What The Twins' World Needs Now

The trade deadline is looming over the heads of Twins fans right now. Like a honed knife's edge, like a hunter's net, like a disapproving parent at the doorway of a kegger thrown by their independent child: it's looming.   At least that's my feeling. And I admit it's a weird one. After all the Twins are sellers (again) in a seller's market (witness the hauls for relatively unimpressive talents thus far). We should be confident. We should be beaming with pride. We should be the belle of the ball,

The 30-And-Under Experiment (Plus Joe And Glen)

It's over, folks. Time to throw in the towel. Again.   As we push past the trade deadline into the final 50-ish games of the season, conventional baseball wisdom would suggest that the younger players should be getting the majority of the plate appearances and innings. I say we throw caution to the wind.   Let's assume, for the sake of argument, that we find new homes for the likes of Willingham, Suzuki, Correia, and even Duensing, and let's also assume, as expected, that Twins Daily is given co

The No Juice Podcast, Episode #15: Big Announcement

On this week's episode of the No Juice Podcast, Dan Anderson and Parker Hageman begin with some big news. Like, really big. Then they talk about the Minnesota Twins which includes the recent trade of Kendrys Morales to the Seattle Mariners, the potential of trading away Kurt Suzuki and the overall status of the team heading towards what is projected to be another disappointing second-half.   Other topics on the show include the Minnesota Vikings training camp, idiotic media responses to domesti

Monday Morning Madness: July 28, 2014

Weekend Recap   Who won the most recent game? Those of us with a healthy recency bias are pretty high on the Twins right now. Everyone else? Not so much.   Logan Darnell...sort of   Congratulations to Darnell for making his first MLB start on Saturday. He got lit up, but it's still a great moment for him. Darnell absolutely deserved this opportunity. He's slowly climbed through the Twins' system since being drafted in the 6th round in 2010. In 2014, he's made 17 AAA starts and has a 3.43 ERA. Wh

Handful Of Twins Not Likely To Be Traded

When a team could be heading for its fourth consecutive 90-loss season, the trade deadline can be a bit of a bummer. The Twins have had the opportunity to deal veteran players over the last couple of seasons but nothing has happened. Minnesota sticks with the players on their roster while not getting anything back for some of their expiring contracts.   Earlier in the week, I took a look at some of the possible trade candidates on the current Twins roster. These players are all veterans and ther

Twins Minor League Report (7/27): Stephen Gonsalves Debuts In Mwl

The Minnesota Twins were able to avoid the brutal 4-game sweep at home courtesy of their fellow AL Central bottom dwellers, the Chicago White Sox, after a Sam Fuld single in the seventh inning gave them just enough of a cushion for the eventual 4-3 victory. Glen Perkins made it interesting in the ninth, but struck out two to pick up his 25th save of the year.   In the minors, a grand slam brought one affiliate a victory, another went into extra innings, and a top pitching prospect made his Midw

Phil Hughes... Hurt

Phil Hughes had a short night on the mound sadly due to an injury. In the top of the fourth inning Chicago White Sox designated hitter Adam Dunn hit a hard ground ball up the middle. Phil Hughes was trying to get out of the way but the ball hit his right shin/ankle. Hughes couldn't finish the play because of the pain and Dunn was safe at first. After walking around the mound for a couple minutes the training staff advised Hughes to come out of the game. Phil Hughes pitched three innings and gave

David Price... Stay or Go?

Throughout the past couple months David Price has had to deal with rumors of being traded. He already told the media about a month go that he didn't like hearing the rumors. He just wanted the Tampa Bay Rays to make up their mind. It's unclear if Price will be dealt because the Rays have less than a week to trade him. David Price is an ace and could be in the talks for Cy Young this year with a 3.08 ERA, 1.04 WHIP, 183 strikeouts, and 11 wins over 163 innings. It's hard to get rid of a pitcher l

Making Minor League Room

I contend that there is no reason to keep certain players who are blocking prospects in the minor league system. I cannot imagine that minor league attendance is really driven by aging players.   From Rochester:   Chris Rahl Eric Farris Doug Bernier Mark Hamburger Aaron Thompson (potential add-on trade bait) Kris Johnson (I know, but the future? potential add-on trade bait)   To Rochester, given these 6 moves:     Kennys Vargas Aaron Hicks Eddie Rosario Ryan O'Rourke Cole Johnson Jim Fuller

The Rest of 2014

In the remainder of the season, I would like to see the following:   1. The Twins trade Kurt Suzuki for a top 150 prospect, Josh Willingham for a top 300 prospect, Casey Fien for a top 500 prospect, Eduardo Escobar for a top 700 prospect, Kevin Correia for a top 1000 prospect, and Brian Duensing for a top 1000 prospect.   2. I would *really* like for the first three of those to happen.   3. Jared Burton gone and Alex Meyer called up to the bullpen.   4. Trevor May called up to start.   5. Josmil

No possible way to win with these coaches...

You can see it in their faces, when the Twins get behind..they quit...   and I believe the reason is that ....The coaches are constantly harrasing them..   By the time a player reaches the major leagues they have had a ton of coaching, when they come up..let them be who they are and see if its good enough.   Did the coaches ruin Aaron Hicks? Maybe..it sure looks like they "coached" him out of the major leagues.   Too many of our players tear up AAA then flounder at Big League..level...   LEA
