Let's get specific, who stays and who goes?

I have spent a lot of time reading blogs, posts, articles and comments about the Twins MLB and MiLB rosters, players, stats and More stats. Some comments really irk me. It is very easy to be anonymous on this sight and therefore put up hyperbolic comments like "cut the whole 25 man roster" and "fire all the field staff and the whole front office". Comments like these do not take in common sense of then what? It takes years to build a 25 man roster and MLB franchise. I have also seen many respons

http://i.imgur.com/Xiw0AIe.jpg   Going to make this quick. A lot of four seam fastballs, and a lot less change ups. His Swinging Strike rates were down as a result, but he still picked up 6 Ks in 5 innings. He did walk one, and that walk came in to score on a 2 run homerun after he left a change up in the middle of the plate and Viciedo was waiting on it. His control did slip a little bit in the last couple innings. He got strike one on 15 out of 20 batters who didn't put the ball in play o

Milone 9/2

http://i.imgur.com/33FOlc8.jpg   Control. It comes down to control. Before 2012, Tommy Milone's BB/9 had always been below the 1.71 that he posted in his first full season in the majors with the exception of one season at A+ ball in 2009. He pitched to a 13-10 record that year, a 3.74 ERA, and a 2.8 WAR that was indiciative of a solid mid to back end of the rotation arm. He even was seeing some decent K/9 numbers for a guy who throws as soft as he does (6.5 K/9). In 2013, his BB/9 jumped to

Hughes 9/1

http://i.imgur.com/X2mm606.jpg   8 innings with three unearned runs on one swing of the bat in the 7th were the only blemish for Phil in today's game. He hung a cutter to Nick Hundley two batters after Plouffe air-mailed a double play grounder into right field. Hughes only tallied 5 strike outs over his 8 innings, but once again, didn't walk a batter and only gave up 5 hits.   S for the peripherals, good control numbers, as he surpassed the 70% strike numbers. Cliff Notes Guide to the 2014 Twins: "The Insistent Tune of a Broken Violin on an August Afternoon"

Chs. 4-5: July and August   The fledgling, flickering hope alive in the hearts of the Twins and their fans at the end of June was doused with the frigid realization of inadequacy. The pivotal moment established by the previous chapters' foreshadowing was for the "All-Star Game" to be held in the middle of July.     http://www2.pictures.zimbio.com/gi/Kurt+Suzuki+85th+MLB+Star+Game+m2g5VjqmdOnl.jpg Yay! Nolasco 8/31

http://i.imgur.com/7VklLWt.jpg   I'm torn on how I feel about this outing. On the one hand, Nolasco didn't seem to have great command throughout the day. He gave up 12 hits, 2 BBs, only 2Ks and two home runs. He seemed to be working in trouble most the day, but outside of the third inning, he was able to get out of it. Baltimore is a very potent offense that will make you pay dearly for mistakes, and the 3 big home runs that accounted for 8 of Baltimore's 12 runs are evidence of that.   I qu

May 8/29

http://i.imgur.com/RVCERK5.jpg   Seemed like May was cruising through three, then a 2 hits, a hit batter and walk later and that's the game. From a numbers stand point, May's control was meh.....61% strikes. Got a lot of swinging strikes on his Change up and 4 seam, and a 16.7 Swinging Strike rate is nothing to shake a stick at, even for Baltimore (10.6% on the year). 8Ks in 4.2. Trying to list some positives as we see another disappointing outing....

http://i.imgur.com/qwgDMJC.jpg   Sorry about the delay. Newborn child doing wonders for a consistent sleep schedule and free time :\. Command was sub par (59.3%), particularly with his 4 seam. Got good swing and strike rates, especially on his slider, and even his 2 seam, but wasn't efficient. Can't complain too much about 4 hits over 5 innings, Though three walks does put his WHIP at 1.4. Not terrible, but you'd like better. One earned run against a potent Baltimore line up does make it easier

The Greatest Pitcher Who Never Was...

If you have read my blogs, you know that I am a huge fan of Sam Deduno. I'm sad to see him leave the Twins, but I believe they gave him every opportunity to succeed, he just couldn't harness his "Krazy" fastball.   However when Sam couild harness it, he was unhitable he could beat anybody, anytime and often did. The reverse is true too that he could be wild anytime and walk runners around the bases, then when he tried to throw it straight, opponents would tattoo it.   Last year he was the te

Twins Minor League Report (8/29): Rochester Remains In Playoff Hunt

Trevor May was cruising for the Twins early in Baltimore tonight, as he had struck five through the first three scoreless innings. But in the fourth the wheels fell off, as he plunked Adam Jones and Nelson Cruz consecutively to load the bases. He struck out old friend(?) Delmon Young, but a walked another, J.J. Hardy, to bring in the game’s first run. Chris Davis then launched a 3-1 pitch for a Grand Slam, and a 5-0 Orioles lead May and the Twins would not recover from.   <rant> Of note

Kernels with pitching issues? Oddly, yes.

Welcome to life as a minor league manager.   The Cedar Rapids Kernels have some of the best pitching in Class A baseball right now. So why isn't Jake Mauer smiling and confident heading in to the MWL playoffs next week?   Jim Ecker's report (click to read) following Thursday night's loss to Kane County reflects one of the challenges Mauer and other minor league managers face at this time of year. One night, your team is popping chamgagne corks (or in this case, sparkling cider), celebrating earn

Designated Everything

Most of the wise and trusted Twins blogs have noted that while the team's current offense, to put it politely, sucks harder than a Super Powered Hoover. Yet, they say, help is on the way from the prospect ranks--even if many of them are currently injured. http://cdn1.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_image/image/36315418/452114082.0_standard_352.0.jpg That's a big but... TwinsDaily Minor League Report (8/28): Nick Gordon Plays Well

The Minnesota Twins exploded for six runs in the top of the tenth inning after they squandered three early game runs and beat the Kansas City Royals. Jordan Schafer continues to hit the ball well for the Twins, and had three more hits on Thursday against Kansas City.   Down in the Minor Leagues the season is entering the final weekend, let's take a look at the Affiliates.   Red Wings Report Rochester 6, Syracuse 3 Box   The Red Wings took the lead late (in the seventh) to defeat the Syracuse

Milone 8/28

http://i.imgur.com/2UicW5y.jpg   According to the GameDay PitchF/x, Milone really changed up his offerings this time around. He didn't mix in his curveball until the later innings (didn't throw it until the 4th inning). According to PitchF/x, he threw a cutter, and threw it quite a bit (19 offerings), and it worked very well. While his command of his 4 seam was off (though some people I spoke to thought that the zone was getting pinched; any input into that would be greatly appreciated), his cut

"We've got to take some pressure off our starters"

As reported by Jackson Alexander of MLB.com, Ron Gardenhire was quoted Thursday as stating that "we've got to take some pressure off our starters." While it's clear that the Twins' 28th ranked rotation (dead last in August) could use some help, it seems shortsighted to call out the offense, which despite two quiet nights at the plate has led baseball in most major categories this month.   The Twins' offense has been a force in August, leading baseball in runs scored, batting average, OBP, wOBA a

Vargas: Kennys Keep It Up?

[Originally posted on twinsandlosses.com]   It seems a little inappropriate to call Kennys Vargas “Little Papi”. According to Baseball Reference he is an inch taller (6’ 5”) and weights thirty-five pounds more (275) than Mr. Ortiz. One can assume that this comparison has more to do with their skills with a bat than their impressive physical stature. They may not be the fastest nor the best when it comes to flashing the leather but they do both possess an important skill, one that Jeremy Clarkson

He commanded of all his pitches, throwing only 20 balls all night and not walking a batter. Can We Just Sign Impact Players? Part II: Offense

Let's face it, every Twins fan is getting tired of watching the poor play of the past couple years. We know the future looks bright as we await the arrival of some of baseballs top prospects, but that does not help the situation on the field right now. The fact of it is, the Twins are lousy again this year and, like usual, it looks like the starting rotation is to blame.   Everybody has their own theory on how the Twins can end the losing. A common theme I keep hearing is some version of "I thin

The Twins Position Players for 2015

The Twins have been on the lower end of mediocre this year and at the roster has been a mess. Looking ahead to 2015 is currently the funnest thing to do as a Twins fan. After looking at the Twins options for bullpen and the starting rotations in my previous blogs, I will now offer my opinions on players the Twins have available to them on the position side of things. This area in my opinion is the most likely area the Twins have available to add improvements via free agency. Without further ado,

The Twins Starting Options for 2015

Everybody knows the Twins Starting five have not preformed up to standards this year. The biggest question facing the Twins this winter is what to do to improve the big club. Does it make sense to go out and sign a Max Scherzer, James Shields or John Lester? I will answer that question in a bit but first let's look at what the options are in house for 2015. LOCKS: Phil Hughes, Kyle Gibson, Ricky Nolassco. I think that Phil Hughes has probably been the best signing this off season while Nolassco

What the Twins should do in the offseason for their bullpen

Here we are, once again playing meaningless games in August/September. I would not term this season as an abject disappoint as there have been some positives to take forward into next spring. Some of the positives are: 1. The apparent willingness to promote players on a quicker pace then before. 2. The emergence of several younger players: Vargas, Santana, Polanco, May, Meyer, Burdi, and Lester Oliveras to name a few. 3. The front office's willingness to cut bait when needed: Kubal, Guerrier, Wi
