  1. Jax, Ober, and Teng may be under the radar to you, but sure as heck aren't under my radar. I will be surprised if we do not see Jax pitching for the Twins at some time during the 2020 season. The other high spot for me yesterday was seeing Severino in the GCL game when I checked their box score last night. This kid got paid like a top prospect, twice. Lets get him playing so he can move up that ladder. Saw that Javier was 0-2 yesterday, but walked twice scoring two of the Kernel's three runs. Speaking of Javier, will the Twins be promoting a shortstop from Cedar Rapids to take Lewis' spot? If so, could it be Javier? Would they promote someone drafted last month? Someone like Steer?
  2. I like the trade, although would have liked it better if Romo were left handed. Have thought for awhile that the Twins need to make two moves for the pen. One is for a top late inning guy who will be around for longer than this year. The second could be a veteran rental, preferably a lefty. Will Romo fill this second slot? Or are two more moves on the horizon? Love how Diaz has been hitting this year, yet see him on the bubble of whether or not he would make the cut and get added to the 40-man. The way I see it, there are 11 or 12 good candidates to add with anywhere from 6-8 at the most spots that will be available. So up to half those prospects may be at risk come the Winter meetings, unless moved elsewhere. Hopefully, a few more will move to new homes before Wednesday. Getting a good prospect like Villamont, who is in his second year, seems like a fair trade considering that the Twins needed to thin their group of 40-man eligible players. Adding the PTBNL evens out the added risk of Vallimont being further away from making it. Getting Romo seems like a big win for the Twins...at least to me. Don't know why there is a PTBNL involved? That often happened in the past with August trades where player X couldn't be moved until after the season. Don't know why it happened last night other than the deal was done quickly and the Twins wanted time to scout certain players. Does anyone know any other reason why a PTBNL would be included?
  3. When he is available, expect he will be the odd man out. Expect either a rehab assignment or just optioned to Rochester until September 1.
  4. Does anyone have any information on the status of La Tortuga? You see him on the bench for every game, seemingly having a good time supporting his mates. Sure doesn't look all that injured. Could the plan be to keep him on the bench until August 11? Then send him out for a 20-day rehab so he is back on September 1 when rosters expand. Meanwhile, he could be available at any time should a need arise for a second catcher.
  5. Rochester is back to only 2 games under .500. Can they climb that hill and get over it this time? Meanwhile, Pensacola took their brief stay at .500 and bounced off it to 4 games over after last night. Rortvedt had his best back-to-back games of the year. If he keeps it up for the rest of the season, he just might help the Blue Wahoos sneak into the playoffs. After going something like 0-60, or whatever it was, Wander Javier has a 5 game hitting streak with three multi-hit games in the last ten. And isn't Minnesota native Matt Wallner off to a nice start to his career, hitting .311 average and .884 OPS? With Rooker, Kirilloff, Larnach and Wallner all filling similar roles for a team, gotta believe one could be gone within the week. Is the rule still around that you can't trade a draft pick until the spring following his draft? If so, that would take Wallner out of any discussions.
  6. One of the reasons I cooled on Gordon was because 2018 wasn't his first problem with the bat. It really was an instant replay of 2017 when he spent the entire year at Chattanooga. With roughly the same number of at bats in the first and second half, he hit .315 average/.880 OPS in the first half. He then went on to hit only .221/.609 in the second half. That is a huge drop off. When he again struggled in the second half of 2018, it made sense to question what his future would be. Seems to have put that behind him this year. Yet, as Dman mentioned above he missed a lot of the first half so maybe the second half swoon has only been delayed? Hopefully, he will keep hitting like he has for the next six weeks...or at least the next few days should he be included in that elusive deal.
  7. No, Yes, maybe. I am saying that the only trade for starting pitching the Twins should make is for someone who is young and has a minimum of two more years that he is under contract/arbitration. Not going to even begin to think about who that may be as there are pitchers like this out there nobody is talking about. Do you give up either or both of LK for such a pitcher, NO. Do you package an attractive deal if pitcher X can be found, yes. I may be wearing blinders, but I believe the Twins have a lot of attractive players that can be packaged, players like one of those six corner outfielders/first basemen who are close, an infielder like Gordon, pitchers like Duran, Rijo, Watson...to name a few. Would I include Graterol or Balazovic, only if the pitcher coming was very good and had longer than two years. Someone who can slide into the #2 slot behind Berrios for the next 3-4-5 years. I guess I am saying they should not go all in for 2019, stay on plan and build a team that will win for the next five plus years. As for who should go to the pen, not a clue. That's a decision for the guys getting paid the big bucks to make.
  8. At a time of year when Gordon began his season long slump the past couple years, he seems to be turning it up a notch. Good for him. Will he still be a Twin next spring to battle Arraez for the second base job? After seeing his performance slide for a couple months, great seeing Rortvedt have a big game. Same for Javier who had his second multi-hit game of his last ten. Other than the number of strikeouts, 8 to 5, Rijo and Watson had identical lines of 7.0 innings of 1 run ball with no walks. Both were deserving the Pitcher of the Day recognition, had Colina not been mowing down 10 Bay Bears. And what can you say about Willie Joe Garry, Jr? Would also be interested in your opinion, Seth, of Spencer Steer. Is he a utility type, say someone like Gonzalez who can play several positions well and hit well enough to stay in the lineup most days? Or is he a potential stud with the bat who will become a regular for the Twins playing position X? Although its only been a few weeks, sure looks like they may have found a good one with this year's third round pick.
  9. Thanks, Doc. One of the best posts I have read on this or any other site.
  10. Thanks for the review, Jeremy. Lots of players to consider, many with good value. Hopefully, there will be one big deal for either a starter, or more preferably a young, dominant reliever who will be around for 2-3 more years. As to who goes, that's what the guys in the front office get the big bucks to decide...certainly not me.
  11. OK, Rochester is back to 2 games under .500. Can they finally get over that hump? It may be a baby step, but Wander Javier has gone 1-4 in each of his last three games. The other Wander (Valdez) went 1-5, driving in 2 runs and is now hitting .323 average in the GCL. Anthony Escobar wasn't at his best last night, but 2 runs in 4.0 innings isn't terrible. Great seeing him adjust to the GCL as an 18 year old. And kudos to the guys that run the minor leagues for the Twins. I recall times years ago when Rochester went into games with either a shortened bench or a few occasions with no bench. This group is doing a better job of moving players around the system when raiding the Red Wings...much better. They only had 11 position players last night with one "temporarily inactive," whatever that is. Any word on how Raley is doing and when he will be back? Will he be back this year?
  12. The Twins lost this series on Tuesday night when they squandered a 6 run lead. Unfortunately, I suspect their bullpen was worn down in the four game series with teh A's. What a job by Smeltzer. Can he and Thorpe both be part of the rotation in 2020? At least one of them? I think we learned early in the game why Buxton needs to be in the Twins outfield. Did it make a difference in the final score? The outcome of the game? Don't know the answer to those two questions, but I do know the Twins miss him. And just another day at the office for Arraez. Don't see him going anywhere, this week or later in August (minors). Could Schoop solve someone else's second base problem? Would that disrupt the chemistry of the team?
  13. Hadn't followed Rosario that closely as he was one of those older guys signed to fill out the AAA roster. Did look at his track record today. Saw he had five years with Colorado with really decent MLB numbers, although not in the last few years. Looks like he was a good option to sign over the winter, a player who was playing to make his way back to the 'show.' Expect the intent was that he could be the next catcher to bring up should something happen to two of Garver, Castro, Astudillo. Will third the above comments about Davis. Does he have enough value to be a big part of a trade to bring a pitcher back this week? Or is he the man to keep and move Rooker, who may be better known and bring more in return? Lewis was 2-8 for the day with a double and homer run. Gotta remember to forget the overall numbers and look at his progress.
  14. Great seeing Jax back on top of his game after a couple rough outings. Pensacola needs him and a few others to step up the next five weeks. Meanwhile, Kirilloff has been getting multi-hit games about every other night for awhile. Javier hit a home run, and that is good. That other Wander also hit a home run, of the three run variety, plus a walk in 5 plate appearances.
  15. You say that Larnach, Duran and Gonsalves is too much. Then you give up more by suggesting Larnach, Thorpe and Gordon. Bad Deal, bad, bad, bad!
  16. Another dismal day in the win-loss column. Also tough seeing the Wings get so close to .500, then slide back. Saw Moya have a good game, thought, has he put his problems behind him and is pitching better of late. NOT. In his prior three appearances he pitched a total of 4.0 innings while giving up 6 earned runs...2 in each game. And Pensacola just can't get back to winning and is now under .500 after their fantastic start. Good seeing Larnach hit well at AA. Kirilloff seems to have put his injuries behind him and is hitting like the player we know. Currently hitting .281/.760 OPS, can he get over .300/.800 by the season end? Ober had four shutout starts in April before missing all of May and June. He came back with two more shutout starts before his last game. With another excellent game yesterday, he is having one heck of a season. Is he someone we should be getting excited about? Or is he another minor league phenom who doesn't make it into a future starting rotation? The injuries don't help, but the good news is that he isn't Rule 5 eligible until after next season...so there is time to find out who he is. This Steer kid sure is off to a good start to his professional career. Seeing he was a third round pick, maybe it shouldn't be all that surprising.
  17. Great seeing Wells have his first great outing since returning from his long absence. Could he be a second Aussie starting pitcher to push his way to the Twins over the next couple years? Second, or third everyone's comments about Lewis. Also fun following Willie Joe Garry, Jr's second year with the organization. Could he? Could he?
  18. Not a good day in the win-loss column. And dang'it, those Red Wings weren't able to win and get back to .500. Unfortunately, Pensacola's loss means they did get to .500. Bah humbug! Nice game for Lewis. Hopefully, he will keep hitting the rest of the year as he has the past several weeks. Unfortunately, there isn't enough time left to get his traditional stats up where we like to see a big time prospect. But that's ok if he keeps showing us the first three months are behind him. Wander Valdez is off to a heck of a start in the GCL. Meanwhile, that other Wander hasn't had a good game since his recent 4 hit night which is looking more like an aberration. Is it time to start watching that other Wander more closely?
  19. Seeing Hendriks perform so well brings mixed emotions. Am happy for the young man. Am sad as I wanted him to do well for the Twins. Then disappointed when we lost him. But he really points out how difficult it is to find, and keep, quality relievers. Someone correct me if I am wrong, but the A's released him last year before bringing him back? And now he is one of the best in the game. Finding a great reliever is almost like catching lightening. There just aren't many Rivera's or Nathan's out there...you know, guys that are great year after year after year.
  20. Excellent, Jeremy. Have been waiting for this and future articles. I see some of those extra dollars used to extend all four of your 'core'. Yes, that includes Rosario, who I view and the heart and soul of this team. I also see Cron as more valuable to this team than most, thus, see him also being extended for a few years this off season. Don't see the Twins trading for a starting pitcher between now and July 31. Problem I see as who will be better than the five we are running out there. If they do, however, it is going to be someone who is younger who is guaranteed to be around for several years. If they do make that trade, do they then trade one of the current three who are going to be free agents? I look for the Twins to do nothing regarding starting pitching before the deadline. Then look for them to extend one, or two, of Gibson, Odorizzi or Pineda in August. The trade I do see them making is to get at least one dominant reliever. Could include several very good prospects for someone with a couple years on their contract. Or lessor prospects for a very good rental...like Smith.
  21. I expect that Rosario, along with Berrios, will be the first ones the FO will work on extending this coming offseason. Last night was a good example of why Rosario is the heart and soul of this team. I doubt he is going anywhere, unless he and his agent have unrealistic expectations. I also suspect the Twins think more highly of Cron than most fans. I look for him also being extended this winter...although I may be among the minority in those thoughts. But you could be right and they may see that in house replacements are ready and will be looking for someplace to save money while spending it on Rosario, Berrios, Buxton, et. al. I see you are in agreement, however, with the main point of my previous comment...that one or two of this group at the most will be regulars on the Twins roster by 2021 and beyond. What management must get right is getting a return for the four that aren't...the biggest return possible.
  22. Stashak had a perfect inning, Allen did not as 3 walks isn't encouraging. Rochester is back to 1 game under .500. Can they get even today? Meanwhile, after an amazing start Pensacola is only 1 game over .500. The nice start by Dobnak has been typical, the hitting not. Looks to me like there are 6 first base/corner outfielders in the high minors that have a legit chance of not only making the Twins, but being very good. Unfortunately, I don't see room for more than one, maybe two making it as long as Cron, Rosario, Buxton and Kepler are around. And I don't see any of that foursome going anywhere in the next four or five years. So who among Rooker, Raley, Davis, Diaz, Kirilloff and Larnach makes it? Will one or more of the others be part of trades over the next 12 days? Or will it be next winter or next summer?
  23. Eddie, Eddie, Eddie. Now maybe the team will get their "swagger" back and clean up some of those mental errors.
  24. I will be shocked if Arraez isn't the Twins starting second baseman in 2020. Not certain what Astudillo's role will be. Will he be a backup/third catcher who also plays several other positions, when needed? Will he be the primary backup catcher behind Garver? Will he be in Rochester and a phone call away when a catcher is injured? Or will he be playing elsewhere? Doubt he would bring much in a trade, so my guess is the last option doesn't happen. As for this year, expect he will remain on the DL another three weeks (until August 11). He will then be sent out on a rehab assignment and return on September 1. That assumes neither Garver or Castro are injured.
  25. Lots of good days on the hill today, Thorpe, Duran, Palm and Gross. When Garry was drafted last year, he was very raw. He was an interesting pick who with his play this year is beginning to look like an interesting prospect. Don't know what to think about Davis. Is he for real? If so, how does he fit into the Twins future? Speaking of that future, don't know what they are going to do over the next 13 days. Will there be a couple smaller rentals? Or will there be a big blockbuster trade that will shock all of us? The strength of the organization, especially in the high minors, is in the outfield. That is also the strength of the Twins. Will they shock us with a blockbuster trade including one of the three young starters?
