  1. What a horse crap game. Berrios has had one great game, the rest of the time he has been so-so at best. Romo, agree with the above comments that it is surprising how he gets the results he does, most nights. Last night wasn't good. Yes, the bats aren't getting it done. But this team is missing Buxton, Donaldson, Garver and now Kepler. Hell, last night might have been another of Kepler's three homer games in Cleveland. What a difference that would have made. As much as I am disappointed of late, I am optimistic that as health returns to so many of these guys the team will get on track by the time the season ends. And bring on Big Mike next time thru the rotation. Oh, and Duffey has been just plain lights out. Add me to the list of those who were surprised he didn't return for 8th after throwing just a few pitches in the 7th.
  2. My point, Seth, wasn't related to how long it will take him to get into playing shape. Rather, I suspect he will be brought along slowly because when/if he has to come off the COVID list, someone is going to have to be DFA'd off the 40-man. That's the reason I expect things to go very slow.
  3. Was really glad to see Hill settle in after an ugly start. As for Alcala, yes he wasn't at his best. But I detected something no one appears to be talking about. Does anyone know the mix between his fastball, curve and change. It seemed to me he was throwing a lot of changes with several of the big hits coming off that pitch. Could be wrong, but gotta wonder if the real problem with him was the combination of a catcher with a handful games experience catching a pitcher with two handfuls of appearances. The result was that I saw very few of his big fastballs.
  4. I am hopeful, Seth, that you are right about the lack of trades by the Twins over the next five days. Good news to hear that Gordon is able to start working towards a return. Considering he must be on the COVID list as the Twins otherwise would have 41 on the 40, I expect his preparation to return will go very slowly.
  5. I think that Avila has been fine at what he is...a veteran backup catcher. But yes, the Twins should be in great shape going forward with Garver and Jeffers. We also should remember that Rortvedt also is an excellent prospect, who bats from the left handed side of the plate. Although missing this year doesn't help his development, he has a future in the big leagues. So yes, the Twins should remain strong behind the plate well into this next decade. I remain hopeful that once the trading deadline is behind us, MLB will increase the 60-man roster to 70 or 75. That would allow the Twins to get players like Balazovic and Rortvedt a month of work in an otherwise wasted season.
  6. Have a roster question, Nick. I believe the 40-man roster currently shows 42 players. They moved Bailey to the 45-day IL last week covering one of the spots they are over. But that still leaves 41. With all the moves don't remember exactly which one put them over last week. But we have never heard what move they made to stay at 40 and their posted roster still shows an extra player. Do you or anyone else have any information on this? Was also wondering about Arraez' knee. Is that the same knee he injured a few years ago while at Fort Myers? It was a knee injury that caused him to miss a year, wasn't it?
  7. Based on last year, I believe that Littell can, and will be a very good reliever for the Twins long term. We are now learning of an arm problem that just may have been the reason he hasn't pitched that well this short season.
  8. Thought there was one word to describe last night's game...ouch! Then seeing what happened to Odorizzi, I guess it should be...ouch, ouch! Continue to be more than impressed with Alcala. He pitched almost three innings last night. With all the starters on the IL, could they stretch him out another inning? Then use an opener for the first two innings with Alcala coming in for the next four. That would get them to the 7th inning when the bullpen would normally get into the game. A thought. Like most of us, I have lost track of where the team is with their 40-man roster, who is on the IL and which players are left in St. Paul to help.
  9. Is that lineup correct? Jeffers is catching a day game after a night game? Is Avila beat up also?
  10. Jeffers didn't look like a rookie playing his first game. Seemed like he had been back there for years. Add in two huge hits and what a night. After all the talk about who the first prospect would be to play this year, not a lot of us mentioned Jeffers. But looking at the possibility of a catcher getting banged up and who would be next in line, maybe we should have. Got the opportunity and got it done. Good chance he will be around for a long, long time.
  11. Gotta disagree, Cody. No way has Buxton been any type of disappointment. Yes, he is still getting his swings in having missed a good part of the shortened summer training camp. But there have been several games where he has shown us the player he can become. Is he a disappointment, no way in ..........
  12. Dunno, but the Twins need both pitching well. For all of us that have been expecting/hoping for Berrios to take that last step to become an ACE, maybe that just isn't his destiny. Still doesn't mean he can't be a top line pitcher who has streaks where he is ACE like combined with streaks he wishes went away. But if he can't put this behind him, he may end up wishing he would have been more receptive the past couple winters when the Twins reportedly were interested in a long-term extension.
  13. Lasted thru 11 when I could no longer stay awake. One of the best games I have ever watched. Thanks Kenta! Like many, I am a bit concerned about getting Taylor Rogers back to the dominant reliever he was last year. Excited to see Arraez hitting this last week like we expected him to. Also excited to see how well Thielbar and Alcala did for three very difficult innings. Expect Thielbar solidified his spot on the roster for a few more weeks while Alcala sure looks to have an exciting future.
  14. Expect the discussion would be different had you posted this today. Wow, one hell of a game last night by Kenta.
  15. Do the Twins have a true ACE, no. Who is their #1 starter, good question. Strong argument can be made for any one of five starters you talk about above. And that doesn't include Pineda who may prove by year's end to be the best of all. No true ACE, but five or six guys battling for the #1 spot. That could be a great situation going into the playoffs.
  16. He was the other one I was thinking could be next. But have a feeling it is going to be Thorpe.
  17. What a fun game last night. Wisler is proving to be another excellent pick up. Certainly doing better than I expected. Looking at the bullpen spreadsheet, looks like Thorpe will be the first to head over to St. Paul when Hill is ready tomorrow.
  18. Thanks for the update, Nick. Winning two of three is always good and should lead to a division championship. Although Cleveland doesn't want to go away even with two starters demoted. Find your mention of the 40-man roster interesting. Had looked at it earlier this morning to see who was likely to be removed when Pineda returns in two weeks. There really isn't an easy choice. Man things have changed from a few years ago.
  19. Was great seeing Littell back yesterday after his ugly outing before going on the IL. It is important for him to return to the pitcher he was in 2019 to lengthen the Twins pen for their playoff run.
  20. Will join the chorus above commenting about Berrios having a disappointing start to this very short season. As for he and others not performing as expected, just don't know how much this screwed up start to spring/summer camp and the season is having. Right now the starters are Berrios-Dobnak-Maeda-Odorizzi and X. Sounds like Hill will join that group this coming week, replacing Mr. X. With the lack of many off days, I fully expect the Twins to go to a six man starting rotation once Bailey and/or Pineda are available. Should the Twins be fortunate to make the playoffs, will be interesting to see who their four starters will be. As of today, it would be questionable if Berrios were included...although October is still six weeks away. On a positive note, thought Alcala looked very good again yesterday. Have to be excited about what he could become for the the Twins bullpen for a long time.
  21. Looks like Sean Poppen got added for today's 14 innings. Heck, if they were both nine inning games I would consider driving downtown and buying a ticket. Will one of today's games go extra innings so we get to see the other change to the rules?
  22. I have been a bit disappointed in Buxton this season. Haven't seen him hit any ground balls to the outfield that he stretches to doubles. Haven't seen any triples, or scoring from first on a play where 99% of all big leaguers would be standing at third. Yeh, the home runs are nice, but I want to see him run!
  23. If I am correct, neither Kirilloff or Larnach needs to be added to the 40-man roster this fall. I believe Rooker does to not be exposed to the Rule 5 draft. For that reason, If a need should develop I could see Rooker being called up with the other two very unlikely. Especially considering they would be playing for only the short time remaining in this season. If either Kirilloff or Larnach were playing every day at Rochester and hitting the cover off the ball, it might be different. But both are going thru the motion of simulated baseball in St. Paul.
  24. Great article. Thanks, Matt. As adjacent has stated above, I also believe the only players that can be traded must be on the 60-man roster. So unless the Twins want to part with one of their top four prospects that are on that roster, they don't have a lot to trade. For that reason, I expect them to be relatively quiet. Heck the best moves they can make may be to go out and get a couple really good starting pitchers, say Rich Hill and Michael Pineda.
  25. Interesting. Will likely depend on whether or not they have four starters pitching very well at the time. If not, they will want to take a shot at having Pineda ready for one of four spots in the post season...assuming we make the postseason.
