  1. Not disagreeing, Cody, that Javier is one of the Twins minor leaguers who will be hurt by not having this season. I question, however, whether he is or should still be considered a top prospect. Correct me if I am wrong, but wasn't Javier left unprotected in last year's Rule 5 draft? I understand there are restraints related to selecting anyone in the Rule 5. However, no one selecting Javier would indicate that the other 29 teams no longer consider him a top prospect.
  2. I will go on record and make a prediction about Kirilloff. He will be added to the active roster by mid-season at the latest. When added, he will be playing in most games and by the end of the season will, 1) be playing on a regular basis; and 2) hitting very well. As for what his role will be, not a clue. He could be playing a lot of first base if Sano were to get injured or share 1B/DH with Sano should Cruz need some time off. He also could become a regular corner outfielder should Rosario or Kepler go on the IL or be in right should Kepler be needed in center if Buxton gets hurt again. In any case, I see him playing a lot and doing very well, kind of like the pre-injury Jason Kubel.
  3. It sure is going to be an interesting summer. Gotta believe that there will be instructional camps for most of the other minor league players at some point, perhaps later this fall. Bring in groups of 30-40 for a month, then the next group the following month, etc. Expect you are right, Seth, that there will be a few more top prospects brought in once players from this group either go onto the IL, COVID list, or are released. Will be both surprised and disappointed if Balazovic isn't one of them.
  4. I am of the opinion that Kirilloff will see some time with the Twins this year as he just might be the eighth or ninth best hitter in the organization. Could happen under several scenarios, won't speculate which will occur. To even be considered, Romero is going to have to find a way to get into the country. Does anyone have any information why his VISA problem is still keeping him out?
  5. The Ft. Myers facility was shut down, wasn't it? Will it re-open, Seth? So players like Balazovic, Rortvedt and others can continue to get some work in this summer? Are you aware of the Twins scheduling formal instructional camps later this summer and fall? Like the FIL they used to run every October/November? Or are they winging it and will think about that after they get the season started?
  6. Someone can correct me if I am wrong, but I understand the Twins notify the League of their roster and the League releases it. After what all fans have been thru the past three months, wouldn't you expect the league to tax your patience a bit more?
  7. Saw in this morning's Strib that the Twins have signed an 18-year old Canadian shortstop from Alberta. Was born in the same Dominican town Sano is from. Said he was signed for $20,000.
  8. Have a couple questions. Will Pineda be included in the 60 man list? Or because of his suspension will he be added when he is available? Will teams have the opportunity to add players to the 60-man list if/when someone goes on the long-term IL and out for the season, ie, Tommy John or other major injuries?
  9. Thanks, Seth. Had probably seen that in some comment section. Obviously, it wasn't accurate and the Twins are fortunate they got him. Sure seems like a good fit for this current squad and the organization was somewhat weak at the corner infield spots.
  10. Has there been any information regarding Smeltzer? Considering his medical history, he could be one who would opt out of the season. Any word on the status of Romero's VISA? Also, is there any chance Sano will be restricted from leaving the D.R?
  11. Thanks for this information about Sabato, Seth. When drafted I had read that the Twins took him earlier than most had him slotted for. Based on that, I expected he would be signed well under slot. So I was surprised when the rumors surfaced that they would need to go over slot. Are you aware of those early stories that the Twins took him earlier than most expected? When reading what you and others have written the past few days, he sure looks like another good pick by the Twins. You mentioned several sluggers drafted early by the Twins above. You didn't include Larnach. Do you not consider him a slugger like Rooker, et. al?
  12. Are you of the opinion, Seth, that Sharpe would not have been available to the Twins when they drafted in the sixth round? If likely, the Twins draft is looking much better. Gotta like the three very nice pitching prospects added to the four draft picks. Heck, Seth, the more I think about it I like this kid more than any player from the draft other than the 17-year old pitcher from Laredo. And I want to apologize to Mr. Sharpe for calling him and others a kid, but when you get to my age almost everybody is a kid. I still call my daughter a kid and she will be 57 on Friday.
  13. Like Doc, I was in the camp that Stankiewicz was their top signing. After reading this, gotta put Sharpe into that top spot. Sounds like a sharp young man and one hell of a prospect. Looks like Sharpe was close to being a top 5 round pick. Although the Twins don't have a lot of FA signings, looks like they got a couple really good ones. Considering how much money is thrown at some of the high draft picks, to bad someone like this young man couldn't have gotten more than $20k...assuming he got that. Hopefully, eight or ten years from now he cashes in with a big contract from the Twins. Add me to the list of those who really appreciate this piece, Seth.
  14. The good news is that baseball should have an easier time dealing with the virus than sports that have a lot of contact. Other than around home plate, a runner held on at first and plays at a base, there really isn't much contact. Thought I would see the rule from tee ball limiting leading off, but that never found its way into any discussion. As to the future, everyone's guess is as good as the experts. When will the grievance be filed, if one is? Will the players show up for the playoffs when the owner's make more tv money? What happens when some team has half a dozen positive tests? If college football and the NFL have fans in the stands, why can't baseball also have 10,000+ fans beginning sometime in late August? Hell, that's the normal attendance at a Tampa Bay game...just spread them out a bit. With only 60 games and no expanded playoffs, no team is a clear favorite. Will the Twins pitching depth get them into the playoffs? Will Miguel Sano be able to get out of the D.R. to be part of this team? If he isn't, who is at first...Kirilloff? And what about Romero, did he ever get his VISA? Lots of questions remain, will we like the answers?
  15. Wasn't overly excited on draft day as I knew nothing about any of the four picks. The more I read since that day, however, has me liking what the Twins did. Like others above, am most excited about this kid. Can Raya be another Berrios? Or even better? In time we will find out, but I like what he is saying.
  16. Very interesting, Seth. Looking at nothing more than numbers, I was assuming Stankiewicz was the guy to get most excited about. Too many similarities to Dougie M. to not like this kid. Expect that Sharpe and Sweany faced more difficult competition than Stankiewicz at Fordham?
  17. Saw in this morning's Strib that Soularie signed for $900,000, or $285,500 UNDER slot. Raya signed for a bit over $30k UNDER slot. So they should have all the cash they need to get Sabato and Rosario signed in the next few days. Bloody shame this draft didn't go at least 12 rounds as they would have the cash to make a couple sweet moves later on.
  18. Will leave all the decisions to the guys that make the big bucks to make them. One interesting point, however, is that you didn't include Thorpe with the list of potential starters. Believe this layoff will have given him the time to reset and look for him to be in competition with Bailey, Smeltzer, Dobnak and Chacin for that 5th and or 6th spots. Doubt they will go with a six man rotation, rather will pair starters throwing 4 or 5 innings with several of these guys that don't make the top five.
  19. That could be true, but I am not certain what cut the agent gets of the tiny minor league contracts versus what his percentage is on the big first round signing bonuses. Plus, gotta believe the number of agents representing the 30 first round picks is small...probably 4 or 5 agent/firms. I expect the large number of players who aren't top prospects are represented by hundreds of other agents with less influence.
  20. That's interesting, Major League Ready. Have been saying for a long time that if they cut the first round bonuses by say 40%, they could double all the salaries in the minor leagues. There probably is a reason the MLBPA would be opposed to it, just don't know why...or maybe I do, ie, the agent's fees would be 40% smaller on those kids. Maybe its time the MLBPA stops catering to the Boros of the world.
  21. I have seen several comments above about Manfred and cutting minor league teams. I am in total agreement that there will be real pain in a lot of places like Elizabethton. Gotta feel for all those folks who's summer will be trashed. But looking at the big picture of MLB, it probably makes a ton of sense what they are doing as teams really don't need the better part 200 minor league players, not including the DSL, to find 2 or 3 rookies every year. These cuts will bring that down by 30 for most teams, other than the Yankees who will need to lose two teams. After having lived with this for several months, my biggest problem isn't that they are making the cuts. And the minimal salary increases previously reported may be offset by the savings of the reduced numbers. But they still haven't gotten minor league salaries to even a minimal acceptable level for these kids. That's the biggest problem I see, not that Manfred seems to be blind to what is going on around him.
  22. I expect like many of you, I check this post four or five times a day hoping to see that the Twins have signed another player or two. So far have been met with a lot of disappointment. Even went to other team sites a couple days ago to see who they were signing. Although I know absolutely zip about any of the players signed by those teams who have been reporting the bigger number of signings, I didn't see any players that I said 'ah shucks,' wish we would have gotten him. To be honest, the numbers reported for Stankiewicz are a lot more interesting than anything I saw on the other sites...although I only checked the Cubs and one other team. Hopefully, we will see a few more guys added to the Twins roster over the coming days.
  23. I am in total agreement with you Jeff. And that is so sad!
  24. Really like Canterino and believe he has a very bright future...assuming anyone ever plays the game again. Between the injuries and lack of performance when playing, would want to see Javier do more on the field before including him anywhere near a top 20.
  25. Question, Nick. When I read about the $25mm donation, I got the impression all of it would be spent in the local Minnesota community. Is that correct? Also got the impression a lot would go towards housing, do you concur?
