4 September Predictions for the Twins
rdehring replied to Cooper Carlson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Will join those who would like to see Rooker join the club this month. The question that must be asked, however, who do you want to waive off the 40-man roster to make his callup happen? That's right, Rooker isn't on the 40-man. Who gets DFA'd...Thorpe? Gordon? Wade? Astudillo? Blankenhorn? So there will be a real cost should Rooker be called up for the next few weeks. That is unless someone is injured and can be stashed on the 60/45 day IL. -
Twins 8, White Sox 1: Berríos Dominates, Bats Bust Out
rdehring replied to Andrew Gebo's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Agree that I would love to see how he does against big league pitching for a couple weeks. But the cost of getting him a couple weeks would be losing someone off the 40-man. So the question is, who do you want to lose for him to get those couple weeks? If you look at the 40-man, there is no longer some cannon fodder on that roster like years past. Losing anyone will have a cost tied to it as it would have to be someone like Wade, Gordon, Astudillo, Thorpe. Is it worth losing someone like that for Rooker to see ten games with the Twins? -
Twins 8, White Sox 1: Berríos Dominates, Bats Bust Out
rdehring replied to Andrew Gebo's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Now that was better, although the two injuries hurt. If both are going to be out more than a few days, they are going to have to make a move. Will Vargas pass thru waivers and get back on the 40-man and active rosters? Again impressed with Alcala. Gotta believe he will be a big part of future pens beginning next year. As for bringing in Rooker, Kirilloff or other young prospects, just don't see it. They would need to make a 40-man move, plus burn an option year for what...a handful of games this year. Unless someone gets hurt a few weeks down the road so the player isn't likely to be optioned, don't see them adding anyone. With that said, watch for one of them to be called up tomorrow. -
Twins Need to Make a Trade with St. Paul
rdehring replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Good article that seems to make sense. Only one problem. With Buxton up yesterday and hopefully Donaldson today, there aren't any open spots for anyone. Agree, they may have missed their chance to see how he would have done during these past few weeks. -
Didn't someone once say that the Twins are a better team when Buxton is on the field? Much Better! And what a great start by Pineda. Those runs in the first inning would not have scored had Sano not had a mental cramp and covered first base. Question, Seth. Is it possible that Pineda is the Twins best starting pitcher? What a pleasant surprise the local kid, Thielbar, has been since his return. And Wisler just keeps pitching well, very well. Both doing what we hoped Littell and Stashak would be doing had they not been MIA.

Official 2020 Trade Deadline Thread
rdehring replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Less than three hours to go. Hopefully, we won't trade for a pitcher without doing due diligence on his medical records because there wasn't time...like last year. Personally, am fine with them making no moves or a minor move. Biggest help should come from getting the gang back together. Certainly don't want to move one of the top three or four prospects. But then you all know how I feel about prospects. -
Tigers 3, Twins 2: This Is Not What You Want
rdehring replied to Cooper Carlson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Today was just plain ugly, as was yesterday and this entire week. Yes, it will help getting Pineda and the injured three position players back. But will they be here soon enough? Three against the White Sox this week. Lose those and they are at a real risk of not making the playoffs. Time for somebody in the organization to start kicking some butt and getting some players and managements attention. -
Twins Up the Middle Players Lead Offensive Struggles
rdehring replied to AJ Condon's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Will second the above comments about Arraez. Would be interested in learning what his average was say the first 20 games and then the last dozen? He came out of this screwed up spring/summer camp not hitting anything like last year. But the batter I have seen the last week plus is much more similar to what we expected. Personally, I have confidence that will continue and by year end, Arraez will have an average well over .300. As for Buxton, well he had a short streak of hitting very well before again going down with an injury. The real disappointment, as you mention, has been Garver. Was last year a fluke? Or is this year terrible due to the weird circumstances? Expect we will know a year from now...assuming baseball has a normal 2021 season. If last year was a fluke, the Twins are fortunate to have two very good catching prospects approaching being ready. -
CLE 6, MIN 3: Cleveland Gets To Romo, Takes Series
rdehring replied to Andrew Gebo's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I have been thinking the same, Finlander. Should two of Odorizzi, Hill or Pineda pitch well the last 25+ games, there is a chance Berrios could miss being part of the playoff rotation should they makes the playoffs...which is highly likely. Can't see the Manager not including him in the starting four, but will he have deserved it. He can make a statement by being closer to the pitcher he was a week ago than last night. Guess time will tell. -
CLE 6, MIN 3: Cleveland Gets To Romo, Takes Series
rdehring replied to Andrew Gebo's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
What a horse crap game. Berrios has had one great game, the rest of the time he has been so-so at best. Romo, agree with the above comments that it is surprising how he gets the results he does, most nights. Last night wasn't good. Yes, the bats aren't getting it done. But this team is missing Buxton, Donaldson, Garver and now Kepler. Hell, last night might have been another of Kepler's three homer games in Cleveland. What a difference that would have made. As much as I am disappointed of late, I am optimistic that as health returns to so many of these guys the team will get on track by the time the season ends. And bring on Big Mike next time thru the rotation. Oh, and Duffey has been just plain lights out. Add me to the list of those who were surprised he didn't return for 8th after throwing just a few pitches in the 7th. -
My point, Seth, wasn't related to how long it will take him to get into playing shape. Rather, I suspect he will be brought along slowly because when/if he has to come off the COVID list, someone is going to have to be DFA'd off the 40-man. That's the reason I expect things to go very slow.

CLE 4, MIN 2: Cleveland Counterpunch
rdehring replied to Andrew Thares's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Was really glad to see Hill settle in after an ugly start. As for Alcala, yes he wasn't at his best. But I detected something no one appears to be talking about. Does anyone know the mix between his fastball, curve and change. It seemed to me he was throwing a lot of changes with several of the big hits coming off that pitch. Could be wrong, but gotta wonder if the real problem with him was the combination of a catcher with a handful games experience catching a pitcher with two handfuls of appearances. The result was that I saw very few of his big fastballs. -
I am hopeful, Seth, that you are right about the lack of trades by the Twins over the next five days. Good news to hear that Gordon is able to start working towards a return. Considering he must be on the COVID list as the Twins otherwise would have 41 on the 40, I expect his preparation to return will go very slowly.

Minnesota’s Present and Future Catching Duo
rdehring replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think that Avila has been fine at what he is...a veteran backup catcher. But yes, the Twins should be in great shape going forward with Garver and Jeffers. We also should remember that Rortvedt also is an excellent prospect, who bats from the left handed side of the plate. Although missing this year doesn't help his development, he has a future in the big leagues. So yes, the Twins should remain strong behind the plate well into this next decade. I remain hopeful that once the trading deadline is behind us, MLB will increase the 60-man roster to 70 or 75. That would allow the Twins to get players like Balazovic and Rortvedt a month of work in an otherwise wasted season. -
Week in Review: Riding the Roller Coaster
rdehring replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Have a roster question, Nick. I believe the 40-man roster currently shows 42 players. They moved Bailey to the 45-day IL last week covering one of the spots they are over. But that still leaves 41. With all the moves don't remember exactly which one put them over last week. But we have never heard what move they made to stay at 40 and their posted roster still shows an extra player. Do you or anyone else have any information on this? Was also wondering about Arraez' knee. Is that the same knee he injured a few years ago while at Fort Myers? It was a knee injury that caused him to miss a year, wasn't it?- 10 replies

Based on last year, I believe that Littell can, and will be a very good reliever for the Twins long term. We are now learning of an arm problem that just may have been the reason he hasn't pitched that well this short season.

Thought there was one word to describe last night's game...ouch! Then seeing what happened to Odorizzi, I guess it should be...ouch, ouch! Continue to be more than impressed with Alcala. He pitched almost three innings last night. With all the starters on the IL, could they stretch him out another inning? Then use an opener for the first two innings with Alcala coming in for the next four. That would get them to the 7th inning when the bullpen would normally get into the game. A thought. Like most of us, I have lost track of where the team is with their 40-man roster, who is on the IL and which players are left in St. Paul to help.

Jeffers Shines in Big League Debut
rdehring replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Jeffers didn't look like a rookie playing his first game. Seemed like he had been back there for years. Add in two huge hits and what a night. After all the talk about who the first prospect would be to play this year, not a lot of us mentioned Jeffers. But looking at the possibility of a catcher getting banged up and who would be next in line, maybe we should have. Got the opportunity and got it done. Good chance he will be around for a long, long time.- 13 replies

Bigger Disappointment: Byron Buxton or Miguel Sano?
rdehring replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Gotta disagree, Cody. No way has Buxton been any type of disappointment. Yes, he is still getting his swings in having missed a good part of the shortened summer training camp. But there have been several games where he has shown us the player he can become. Is he a disappointment, no way in .......... -
Leaders Have Become Laggards on Twins Pitching Staff
rdehring replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Dunno, but the Twins need both pitching well. For all of us that have been expecting/hoping for Berrios to take that last step to become an ACE, maybe that just isn't his destiny. Still doesn't mean he can't be a top line pitcher who has streaks where he is ACE like combined with streaks he wishes went away. But if he can't put this behind him, he may end up wishing he would have been more receptive the past couple winters when the Twins reportedly were interested in a long-term extension. -
Lasted thru 11 when I could no longer stay awake. One of the best games I have ever watched. Thanks Kenta! Like many, I am a bit concerned about getting Taylor Rogers back to the dominant reliever he was last year. Excited to see Arraez hitting this last week like we expected him to. Also excited to see how well Thielbar and Alcala did for three very difficult innings. Expect Thielbar solidified his spot on the roster for a few more weeks while Alcala sure looks to have an exciting future.
