  1. The biggest question is what are these guys going to be doing when the Twins are playing? Seeing there isn't going to be a minor league season, they are going to need to be creative to keep X number of players active and ready when injuries occur. Although not on the 40-man roster, I suspect that Kirilloff and Larnach would get added before players like Celestino and Blankenhorn. That assumes they are playing wherever the replacements are. If there is a three week spring training 2, will FSN televise all of their games? Would sure hope so.
  2. Universal DH, yes. No to the others in the future, however, this year needs to be an exception. I would really like to see MLB expand to 32 teams so there isn't the need to have all the inter league play. Maybe keep it at 6 games so teams can play their cross town rivals. That gets two series a year for the Mets vs. Yankees, Cubs and Sox, Reds and Indians, Dodgers and Angels, etc. Twins would play the Brewers, which is always a good time for lots of fans. Yes, there are some rivalries that really aren't, but for the most part this is fun for the fans.
  3. Great article, especially the part about hoping baseball will be back in a month or so for early summer training. Agree with those above that Atlanta should be in the East and Pittsburgh in the Central. Biggest question to me is what they are going to do with rosters if there is no minor league play. Expect each team will carry their entire 40-man roster with 26 dressing for each game or series or whatever. Don't know how the other 15 will see enough action to keep them sharp and continue their development. Maybe the 15 not on the active roster for each series will play a game or two against the 15 not active players from the team they are playing. Start it at 10 in the morning and it is over hours before the scheduled game starts that evening. One problem is this would require another 15 players traveling to away games and the cost associated with that. But replacements for injuries and poor performance are going to have to come from somewhere.
  4. Haven't both become locals, Seth? If memory serves, at least one ended up in Elizabethton because he married a gal from there. Considering how long both have been coaching this team, gotta believe they are getting to the age that they will not want to upset their lives and move elsewhere. Hopefully, there will still be something there for them to be involved in.
  5. Wander Javier an all-star in AA! That would be so pleasant of a surprise.
  6. It will be very sad when Elizabethton is no longer part of the organization. The more I read about what they want, however, I understand it makes sense. Perhaps something good will come to the Appy League. If the draft and signings are cut to say, 20 rounds, what will happen to all those college seniors who go undrafted? I have seen hints that there would be leagues where these players would go to play a short season and kind of audition to get signed to a big league contract. Perhaps there will be some type of affiliation with a major league team which would provide minimal financial support, maybe not. The Appy League might be ideal for this type of league. Unfortunately, Elizabethton is so small the economics might not work. Gonna be a lot of change as America and the sports world comes out of our crisis. Not certain I am going to like what we have next year and beyond that.
  7. Wow! If two of the five match those selections the Twins should be happy, very happy. Expect all five will have big league careers, just difficult to know at this time which will become the big stars. Best bet is probably Kirilloff as he is so very close.
  8. Wasn't Hildenberger a 49th or 50th round pick? I think getting a couple years of value out of a pick that low may be a bigger find than a 10th or 15th round pick becoming a good starter. But that's just me. Although not a draft pick, getting value out of an undrafted free agent like Dobnak is going to be huge.
  9. As the likelihood of no baseball in 2020 grows, the uncertainties for 2021 increase. And with those questions going forward, teams are going to work to reduce their payrolls as low as possible. I understand that the Twins have about $50,000,000 to $60,000,000 committed to 2021, including minimum salaries for players needed to fill out their roster. I expect the Twins, and most teams, will be working with a lot of young players and few high priced free-agents...if any. On the other hand, if healthy, a player such as Romo could be a good add should he want to pitch one more year for a rock bottom contract. A million bucks is still a lot of money and may be even more in the new world we will be living in.
  10. I expect that Matt was assuming that arbitration numbers would be the same because they would be based on the same previous season as those awarded last winter. To my knowledge, this wasn't included in the preliminary agreement worked out a few months ago. I expect in the real world, however, arbitration awards would go down. Although there will be much uncertainty related to the 2021 season should 2020 not exist, one certainty will be that major league teams will be coming off large losses with many unknowns for 2021. I expect an arbitrator will consider those unknowns. I also expect both teams and most agents will also take those into consideration when setting their demands which will likely be lower. And if we are saying goodbye to Eddie it will be a sad day in my baseball world.
  11. Would have to agree with you on that, Seth. Although, I was thinking more in terms of career. Carew had the incredible average and OBP, whereas Molitor had more power and stolen bases. Expect people could argue about that one for a long time.
  12. Every time I read this, Seth, I think of how my Milwaukee teams would have faired by comparison. First the Braves, then later it will be the Brewers. I keep looking at Carew and wonder who would be better at second base, Carew or the Brewers Paul Molitor? Who would you give the nod to in that comparison, Seth?
  13. No question this is a huge year for the three mentioned. But it is equally big for many others. A few approaching free agency like Odorizzi and May need big seasons. Nelson Cruz needs another good season to be confident that he should extend his career. Luis Arraez needs to put up another year of the same for both he and management to know what they have for the next 5 to 10 years. The list goes on and on, but getting back to baseball this season may be bigger for the fans than any player as we search for something/anything to fill our days.
  14. Shocking to me that the pitcher you eliminated is Dobnak. By all indications, he was the leading candidate for the #5 spot when ST came to an end. Amazing how many still doubt him after what he did last year in both the minors and while with the Twins.
  15. I think you forgot someone, Cody. I see them carrying 14 position players, not the 13 you indicated. The 14th man is Nelson Cruz! That would leave room for 15 pitchers. Expect there is still a question that Rich Hill will be ready to return. Don't know what Chacin's future is with the Twins as I recall he wasn't great in the few innings of action in March. Personally, will continue to give the nod to Dobnak to open in that 5th starter role and pitch so well he doesn't leave the rotation anytime in 2020.
  16. Believe I read somewhere that this was covered in the deal baseball struck with the players last month. His suspension would stand at 39 games. It wouldn't affect his being eligible for the playoffs...he would be eligible. And should there be no baseball, it would not carry over to 2021. But that was when baseball may have been hoping for a full season. Should everything get reworked with an 80 or 100 games season, suppose his and other suspensions could get addressed.
  17. Wanted to comment on Littell. As I watched him last season, he kept reminding me of Joe Nathan. Not necessarily the same type of pitcher, just something about seeing him on the mound. Don't know whether or not he will ever achieve Nathan's level of success. But even becoming Nathan Lite would make him a very important part of the Twins pen. And yes, I see that happening whenever ball returns.
  18. Can you remind me whether or not Romero has options this year? I think he is out, but then remember something about an extra year...which may have been used last year. If he is out, suspect the enlarged rosters may keep him with the Twins. Also, any news on the status of his getting his Visa so he can join the Twins whenever they start up? I see you included Duran. Do you see him as a reliever? And if so, long-term?
  19. The best part of that interview was his last comment, Go Sioux! Will never understand why the NCAA got a burr under their saddle and won't let UND at least keep Sioux and remove the 'Fighting' part.
  20. In addition to a shoulder injury, Kepler banged up his knee earlier in the summer and dealt with that injury until the end of the season. If healthy, I see Kepler having a better season in 2020 than in 2019...should we be so fortunate that there is a season.
  21. Thanks for the added info on Spahn, Burdette and Buhl. When I commented above, I recalled that game vs. Haddix. Didn't remember who Burdette faced, but recall that he won that long game which I listened to part of.
  22. Burdette was an interesting starter. If memory serves, he always gave up lots of runners, just not a lot of runs. But Spahn was special, probably as good as any lefty to ever play the game. The most wins of any lefty ever, and he missed three of the best years of his career while serving in the Army during WWII. Unlike so many athletes of the recent past, Spahn was a combat engineer who was in the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded a purple heart. He was an old guy when I met him, but just loved the crusty old Oklahoman.
  23. Comparing to other sports got me thinking. Doesn't baseball have the least contact/closeness of all major sports? Should they opt to go with robo umps for balls and strikes would remove one of the three at home plate...I assume he could move a few steps back from the catcher. So that would make the batter/catcher and base runner at first with the first baseman holding him on as the only ones who are real close. Add a few plays where there is some contact throwing out a runner at a base. Plus, unlike hockey and basketball, it is outdoors for most teams.
  24. Got me thinking about my team in the '60's, Seth. Would put Aaron and Matthews up against the Twins top two. Crandall, Logan and Covington were also very good. But after the top two, the Twins depth throughout the lineup would give them the nod. But then my team up and left for Atlanta in 1966, so many of us don't really want to think about baseball and the 60's.
  25. So many unknown's Ted, makes it hard to even speculate. But I agree that if more games are played over a shorter period, the Twins pitching depth will be a factor. As for what the season ends up being, who knows. Wouldn't surprise me if spring training is consolidated in one place with the Phoenix area being the most logical or even only alternative. Expect that once the season begins, however, most teams will be playing at home with a few at some neutral site assuming there will still be some areas where the virus remains a major problem.
