Interesting, Nick. But I don't see trading either happen until July. Why? The Twins still don't know for certain what Festa, Matthews, etc., will be. By July they should know which of their top prospects are for real and if any of those young bats are hitting like they should (and didn't in September). I see some minor fine tuning this winter, then a bigger move come July.

Curious what people were saying about Johann when he joined the Twins following the Rule 5 draft however many years ago. Guess time will tell, but maybe the Twins are do a bit of luck?

If traded, whether that is good or bad will depend on the player(s) returned, not the $$$ savings. Yes, the dollars saved will help fill out the rest of the team. But they have to get value in return, preferably at least one player ready, or nearly ready, to play. But they shouldn't stop there. The Twins have lots of depth at starting pitching and middle infielders. Yet, they don't have a top defensive shortstop, if Correa is traded, anybody you want to see at first base or a good left handed reliever. So trading Paddack and one of those excess infielders seems to me to be additional moves that need to be made. The excess infielders in my book are Julien and MIranda as I want to see them keep Lewis, Lee and Keaschall.

During the last offseason, both the Lynx and Wild were thought to do very little. Guerin was dealing with a bigger salary problem than the Twins. And he had a team that missed the playoffs for the first time in awhile. So he completes a couple deals and brings in a couple guys who were solid, but certainly not big parts of any team. The Lynx did much of the same. The results were the Lynx being one shot away from a championship and the Wild are currently the best team in the NHL (I continue to wonder how this is true). The Twins have a talented roster. Their biggest needs are relatively minor, with the biggest being a need to cut maybe 5% of their current salary. Yes, Paddack or Vazquez are the most logical financial moves. But can the Twins have a disappointing winter and wonderful summer? I expect we will see a disappointing winter. Can they have a wonderful summer?

Interesting titles for the hitting coaches, Seth. There are two hitting coaches and one assistant. Would think there would be a hitting coach, Borgschulte, and the other two would be assistants?

All indications are that this winter is going to be an interesting one. I cringe when I think of an outfield with Larnach and Wallner on the corners, especially when Buxton isn't in center. Considering most moves the Twins make could be via trades, I wonder if one of Larnach or Wallner be on their way out? Would sure help their overall defense if only one of that pair is out there come opening day. Should that happen, the likelihood of ERod making the opening day roster just got better.

Twins Daily 2025 Top Prospects: #3 Luke Keaschall, INF
rdehring replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
My first thought is that the Twins have a need at first base. And Keaschall played a fair amount of first last season. But isn't it best that first basemen are taller? You mentioned that he is shorter. How short is he? And won't that be a negative at first base? With that said, I love this kid and hope that he becomes that player who is as good as anyone, yet doesn't have the hype of a Lewis, Lee or Jenkins. -
Good news is that we will know tomorrow. I'm sure not going to lose any sleep tonight.

Are Trevor Larnach And Matt Wallner Redundent?
rdehring replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
To some extent, yes. If I were to choose, would keep Wallner over Larnach. Believe he is under team control a year or so longer. Larnach also tends to get injured too much. Whereas Larnach is a solid bat with marginal defense, Wallner could be special in two areas of his game. Although limited defensively, he has a cannon. He also has massive power, which gives him the edge in my opinion. Personally, would feel much better about the Twins if two of their three outfielders are very good defensively. That ain't the case if both of these guys are in the corners. -
The Path to an Elite Minnesota Twins Bullpen in 2025
rdehring replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Great article, Nick, thanks. Count me among those hoping Jax stays where he is and Varland also understands his future is in a bullpen where he could be very, very good. I have believed since early summer that Duran's lack of spring training and missing the first month plus of the season was the reason he wasn't his normal self. As you mentioned, believe they need one outside left-handed arm that is solid. Then if Moran recovers and is good, that is gravy. Am intrigued that Canterino remains on the 40-man. If they didn't believe he could be healthy in 2025 gotta believe he would have been removed by now. And if this young man can finally be healthy he could be a huge add to the pen by early summer.- 47 replies

Great report, Seth. Heck, Fantastic, thanks. Ober, Varland, Festa, Matthews, Morris, etc., etc., etc. Have one question bouncing around my brain. The Twins are doing something I don't recall they have ever done. That's drafting and developing top notch starting pitching. Lots of it. Which is it, Seth? Is it their scouting and finding these guys in the lower part of the top ten rounds of the draft? Or is it their development of these arms? Maybe it is a bit of both, but I am elated at how well management has been developing these kids.

Will be interesting couple days and your article gives us something worthwhile to think about for the next 30 hours or so. My one thought looking at this list is that it doesn't have the high level talent we often see. I guess some of that is due to the fact that a lot of the best prospects were added over the past year. Perhaps the most meaningful move, or non-move, the Twins could make in the next two days is keeping Canterino on the 40-man. That would tell us they believe he is likely to be available in 2025. Considering he is potentially better than any of the above prospects, that could be HUGE!

Interesting young man. Sure aren't a lot of knuckleball pitchers out there. Are there any that have three regular pitches along with a good knuckleball? Could make him different enough to be good. With one of Matthews/Festa and Morris (not including Varland, who I assume will be in the Twins pen) ahead of him, expect he will spend all of 2025 in St. Paul. And that's ok. I see Twins management taking a lot of hits, maybe they should get a bit of good will for the job they have done these past several years drafting and developing these pitchers.

Perhaps the best situation we can hope for Doc is that he gets a cup of coffee with the Twins late next year. Then has a good spring in 2026 and plays some of the year with the Big Club. Has a couple nice two week stretches where he does well, offering some hope. Then as ERod and Jenkins both settle in, he has value so the Twins can use him in part of a package bringing in a meaningful part of their 2027 Championship team. (I can have rose colored glasses, can't I?)

Did a double take, bean, when you wrote that Henry Aaron was 6-0 and 180. Went and checked baseball reference and yup, that's what it says. On the other hand, the player I remember was a lot less than 180. More like 160. And 6-0 was a generous measurement. Of course that was early in his career when he was a youngster in Milwaukee.

Interesting, Seth. Also, puzzling. Does Falvey have any experience qualifying him to run the business side? Are any of the recent departures being replaced with new blood? If not, seems the executive level payroll is going down. Perhaps, a lot. Is that all part of touching up the Twins paint job prior to sale? Or is it possible that the Twins have actually lost money going as far back as the pandemic year and they are trying to bring it to break-even or profitable before a sale?

Twins Trade Candidate Breakdown: Chris Paddack
rdehring replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Was excited when the Twins acquired Paddock. Continue to believe that he can become a very good starter. Unfortunately, he hasn't been able to stay on the field. Will other teams be interested? Interesting question which we will have to wait to be answered. If he is moved, I see one of two returns. The most likely may be for a mid-level prospect which would give the Twins $7.5M of salary relief. The other trade would see the Twins getting something of value in return. Could that be a lefty bullpen arm or first baseman? Maybe. Or perhaps a good prospect close to big league ready for one of those two holes in their roster. For me the latter option would be best. But we are all going to have to wait for an answer. Will that answer actually come, or will Paddock be the Twins #4 or #5 starter on opening day? I guess the worst-case scenario would be trading him for a mid-level prospect, then watching him start the All-Star game for the National League while our guy is pitching in Wichita! The way things have gone for the Twins of late, this may be the most likely scenario. -
Thanks for the article, Cody. Found it to be interesting. As for your question, we will find out later this week. Or is the date they need to act early the following week? Don't understand the comments regarding his not playing catcher full time. Don't most of the minor league clubs have three catchers. These are all guys they want playing some of the time, thus, playing more than 50-60 games isn't likely. Haven't looked at the data, but how many catchers, if any, played behind the plate significantly more? The fact that they have him playing outfield regularly when not his turn behind the plate tells me more about how they value him.

Carlos Correa Trade Buzz Is Heating Up
rdehring replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Have been pleasantly surprised by how well CC played this year. And find his defense, mostly arm, amazing. With that said, his $35M makes it nearly impossible to get the remaining parts to be a legit contender. If they would trade him, they have to get value in return. Do they need a young shortstop? Or are they ok with one of Lewis, Lee or Keaschall at short? I don't know if any of that trio is good enough in the field to be that guy. But they certainly have three young players who project to be good to very good big leaguers for the three infield positions. And that doesn't include Julien. As long as Falvey gets value for value in return, this may be the one move that puts the Twins back into contention. Well this move and much of the team hitting in September like they did the first four months of the season. -
Minnesota Twins Arbitration Dilemma: Jhoan Durán
rdehring replied to Matthew Lenz's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I expect that most TWins fans weren't happy with Duran's performance this year. I suspect the most unhappy person was Duran. I have had the feeling much of the summer/fall that he was never feeling 100% like his old self. He missed much of spring training and then the first what, month or two of the season. He then hurried back and never settled into the fireballer we remember. Assuming he has a normal winter and spring, I expect the Duran of old in 2025. And that isn't someone anyone will trade. -
It has never been clear to me what the smiley face represents. Does it mean that the commenter is being sarcastic about the post he/she is responding to? Or does it mean that the post brought a smile to one's face? I wanted to clarify, Doc, that when I add the laughing face it means that your comment brought a smile to my face and I wanted to say thanks for making my morning a bit happier.
