Remember when Dick Bremer retired the Twins gave $5000 (yes, five thousand dollars) donation to Bremer's hometown charity. The guy worked for the Twins for 40 years calling 160 games per year, and that's the best gesture the Twins could make. Not sure I'm quite over the way they treated Dick. Corey's been OK but I honestly don't see how this guy is an improvement.

Agreed. To be out of work at age 28 with no backup plan would be incredibly strange - something most of us can't imagine. Glad the players' union protects their own! Of course there are other leagues that exist for AAAA type guys, if they want to play. There are often opportunities for guys like Alex to go play a few years down in Mexico, or head over to Korea or Japan. Great food and amazing cultures, and you get to experience all of it while batting .330 in front of a passionate fanbase!

This is a lesson to remember: prospects are never guaranteed. A few years ago, this board was full of people discussing the Twins lineup of the future, with Larnach and Kirilloff set in stone as the 3-4 hitters for the next decade. Due to this, most Twins fans agreed we didn't need LaMonte Wade, and were happy to unload him for any spare parts we could get in return. Today both Larnach and Kirilloff are nothing more than organizational depth, guys entering their late 20s with no real signature moments, unable to hit consistently at the major league level. One could easily argue that they've hurt the Twins far more than they've helped, as the organization has stuck by both of them for long stretches, waiting for them to come out of "slumps" that today look less like slumps...and more like these guys just being who they are. It's clear that by now the Twins front office has started looking elsewhere for the players that will make up the future core of this team. Kirilloff's window stayed open for a long time, he was handed starting jobs out of spring training multiple times and simply could never do anything with it. He's hurt, tired, and scuffling along in what appears to be the death throes of his major league career. So the next time you hear about the Twins next big "prospect", please approach the subject with a healthy dose of skepticism. Producing consistently at the major league level is incredibly difficult, even for the bluest of blue chip athletes.

I don't understand the Rocco hate. He's playing with the cards he has. "Hiding" Thielbar and other 'low-leverage' guys means they get to stay on the team for a bit longer. Rocco is telling Falvine: "this guy sucks" and he's going to keep rolling him out there until a decision gets made to cut him. He did the same thing with Margot, who seems to have somehow played himself back into relevancy. This isn't on Rocco. This is about a bad front office who is cobbling together a team with bubble gum and duct tape. Rocco's advocating for change by playing these awful players to force management's hand. -

Wow @Peter Labuza's "Santana Takes it Himself" article on TD was just mentioned by the Twins broadcast booth in the top of the 7th inning after a ground ball to Santana. Nice work man! -
Twins Bring “Ripple Effect” With City Connect Uniforms
bighat replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
A "city connect" jersey that has the STATE of Minnesota on the hat, an outline of Lake Minnetonka somewhere, and "MN" on the jerseys? What part of any of this "city connect" jersey is connected to the city of Minneapolis, whose citizens have loyally hosted this team for its entirety? The designers did not understand the assignment. Just call it an "alternate jersey" if that's what we're going with. Also: it's really, really bad. There are some bad ones out there and this is definitely in the bottom tier. Uff-da. -
Twins (Lopez) vs Yankees (Stroman): 6/6/24, 6:05pm
bighat replied to Brock Beauchamp's topic in Archived Game Threads
Yankees 5, Twins 0. The Twins know it, the Yankees know it, the crowd knows it and so does every baseball fan. It's not a curse, it's not a jinx. It's an organization-wide failure 20 years in the making, and it's an inexcusable embarrassment. -
Buxton wouldn't start on 3/4 of the MLB outfields today. It's a far cry from a few years ago where he was an elite option. His star shined bright, faded quickly, and is now fizzling out. I know injuries have been his main Achilles heel but he also has a record of streaks of horrific plate appearances even when perfectly healthy. Even without the injuries I think his career would be sidetracked - though perhaps not this severely. His trade value is as low as it's ever been, no team wants him, if the Twins somehow managed to offload him we'd be paying a heavy price for someone to take on Bux and his contract. Great guy, elite fielder in his prime, and will always be one of the names that comes up frequently when old timers talk Twins baseball over while trolling for walleye in 20 years. He'll always be The Greatest that Never Was.

What is Royce Lewis STILL doing in St. Paul!?!?!
bighat replied to bighat's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
"It doesn't happen that often" - but I think it does. I just named a bunch of players who came up at age 19 or 20 for the Rangers, Braves, Brewers, Nationals, Reds, Mariners, and Royals. At this point it's almost the norm for a team to have a talented superstar under age 21. So where's our Acuna? Where's our Witt Jr? Where's our Bryce Harper, our Julio Rodriguez, our Elly de la Cruz? Why do Twins fans say things like "Take it easy on Trever Larnach, he's still a 'prospect'" when the guy is 27 years old? Why are Twins fans so quick to make excuses for old men like Alex Kirilloff? The guy is collecting social security. These are not "young players". This is not a "young core" with any kind of long-term future in the organization. They will be 30 soon and signing them to any kind of long-term deals will not happen. By holding back prospects, the Twins now have a stockpile of 24 year-olds in St. Paul who need to be playing Major League Baseball. Half of them they just let rot in St. Paul in favor of Farmer and Margot, the other half they trade for washed up pitchers with dead arms. What's the point of drafting talented players if you're not going to play them? In short, I'd like the Twins to be able to identify talent earlier, and have them up and playing major league baseball and contributing - producing an exciting, watchable product that makes us all smile and cheer and be happy. Is that too much to ask? (I really don't know what I'm arguing for here, I guess I just wish the Twins had a cool young marketable superstar who doesn't get hurt every 5 minutes).- 56 replies

Agree with all of this - especially that Keirsey languishing away while Margot and Farmer put up some of the worst numbers in MLB history is a crime.- 56 replies

What is Royce Lewis STILL doing in St. Paul!?!?!
bighat replied to bighat's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
I am having a bit of fun, I am happy someone caught it. I have Royce Lewis on my fantasy baseball team and have had him stashed on the bench all year. Been brutal. I'm trying to will his activation into existence by letting my alter-ego take hold of the keyboard here. I know that he should get some ABs in the minors here, thankfully I am sure he'll be back by early next week.- 56 replies

What is Royce Lewis STILL doing in St. Paul!?!?!

Byron Buxton debuted back in the dark ages before TikTok existed. What's next, you going to tell me how the Twins brought up John Castino directly from his pappy's pig farm when he was 22 years old or something? C'mon now, everyone knows the Twins famously, notoriously, are slow to promote. This is a fact. Why you are twisting yourself into knots trying to prove otherwise is beyond me. The Twins need Royce, and they need him now, and we all want to watch him run through a stop sign at 3rd base, steaming for home like a runaway freight train. The sooner the better.- 56 replies

Dude, Acuna debuted at 19. Ozzie Albies came up at age 20. Bobby Witt came up at 20. The Mariners called up Julio Rodriguez at age 19. Brewers have this Churio kid up at age 20. The Reds' Elly De La Cruz was 21 last season. The Rangers have 2 starting OF (Wyatt Langford and Evan Carter) who are 22 and 21, respectively. And here you are using the fact that the Twins promoted Matt Wallner at 24 and that's your example of the Twins "rushing youth through the system"? Ober came up at 25 - you think he's some spring chicken? Dude these guys are grandfathers by the time they get to the majors. Meanwhile every other MLB club is bringing up 20 year-old All-Stars. Twins fans need to step away from their glass of milk and white toast and look around the league a little bit. This organization is about as conservative as it gets when it comes to promoting young players.- 56 replies

Four teams in the AL Central sit at or above .500. That's more than the AL West and AL East combined. There is really no argument against this claim, it's a straight fact. Nobody wants to play the Guardians or Royals right now, and the Twins have been dangerous when streaking. Detroit is solid. Every other division must take a knee and bow before the almighty AL Central.

I lived in Guatemala for 6 years, and had to communicate in a foreign language as part of my daily life. My Spanish was OK when I arrived, and was much better by the time I left - but even then I'd make mistakes every day. Sometimes they were harmless, but there were plenty of things I said that came across as offensive, distasteful, and even hurtful. And this was all without bright lights, cameras, and a reporter asking me questions. I'm certain that many players really only catch 1 or 2 words from reporters and then just spout a basic canned response, sometimes without realizing the context of the question. I'm sure that's how I would have handled it. I really do think all MLB reporters need to be much better at handling how to speak to players who aren't completely fluent in English. Here's an idea: have them all spend a week at my mother-in-law's house in Guatemala City with no English-speakers in sight. I can assure you that once they return, they will be much more empathetic and understanding when it comes to communicating with Latin-born players.

The Twins Offense Boasts Plenty of Upside Going Forward
bighat replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
He's stealing bases and legging out doubles. What more does he need to do, exactly? I'm guessing if he ran out there doing backflips like Ozzie Smith you'd say "I think he needs to work on that backflip rotation a few more weeks in St. Paul before we take the bubble wrap off this guy". The Twins are not leading the division by 10 games, it's the other way around.- 32 replies

Absolutely zero reason Royce Lewis shouldn't be in the lineup today against KC. He's playing in St. Paul at full speed, crushing the ball and stealing bases. Did the Bulls make Michael Jordan play in some backwater semi-pro league in Beloit for 2 weeks before they allowed him to rejoin the team? What kind of ridiculousness is this?- 32 replies

So just because theTwins told everyone they were going to let an MVP candidate rot away in the minors, that makes it OK? I have been to CHS Field, but it was 5-6 years ago before they were the Twins AAA team.- 56 replies
