  1. Yeah that's great. I'm guessing for the guys who aren't involved in contract talks and don't sit too high in status in the front offices, there is plenty of boozing taking place at the winter meetings.
  2. And you know this time of year, Pelfrey is barely on Boras' mind. Surely he's thinking that he's got bigger fish to fry at the moment. I'm not very interested in Pelfrey, but Pelfrey at $5 million for 2015 is probably a hell of a lot easier to move than Arroyo at $12 million. Seeing as Nolasco and Hughes are both under contract longer than 2 years, Meyer/Gibson/May are near MLB ready and the Twins have a plethora of reclamation arms that may be servicable, one would have to think anyone signed to a two year deal this offseason may be looked at as trade bait this time next year.
  3. And that offer from the Twins might be superior. I was interested, but I'm not upset about the Twins not getting him, I'm actually kind of relieved to see the price for Anderson wasn't very high, just as it should not have been. Beane clearly could not drum up a sucker this time.
  4. I don't trust him. Even in his "healthy" comeback year he still missed over 30 games. Let the Red Sox make the same mistake the Giants just made after winning the World Series. Let them re-sign all their core vets who just happened to have career or bounce back years. He's much better than what the Twins have now, but he's not elite and whatever skill he has seems less than 50/50 to continue throughout a 3 year deal.
  5. Payroll would only be part of the issue though. The Twins would have Nolasco, Hughes and Arroyo locked into spots barring injury and Meyer, Gibson and May ready to roll. They could be busts, but surely that won't be decided by 2015; aside from injury, I find it hard to believe two of those three young arms won't be given every chance to keep a rotation spot. There just wouldn't be a clear open spot should there be a superior free agent pitcher available next year. Many of these guys will get extensions, some will pitch themselves out of the Twins price range, but there are plenty of names interesting enough for me to want to be flexible with at least one 2015 rotation spot: Brett Anderson (27) - $12MM club option with a $1.5MM buyout Homer Bailey (29) Josh Beckett (35) Chad Billingsley (30) - $14MM club option with a $3MM buyout Johnny Cueto (29) - $10MM club option with an $800K buyout Jorge De La Rosa (34) Ryan Dempster (38) Yovani Gallardo (29) - $13MM club option with a $600K buyout Dan Haren (34) Hisashi Iwakuma (34) - $7MM club option with a $1MM buyout Josh Johnson (31) Clayton Kershaw (27) Jon Lester (31) Justin Masterson (30) Brandon Morrow (30) - $10MM club option with a $1MM buyout Jeff Niemann (32) Jake Peavy (34) Max Scherzer (30) James Shields (33)
  6. A two year deal wouldn't do much damage internally, but next year's free agent pitching class looks a lot better than this year's, even if a bunch of them get extensions. I think I'd prefer a guy on a one year deal this year just so there's room to add a free agent better than Arroyo next year. There's no need to blow their 2015 free agent budget right now, unless they really think they can knock off the Tigers in 2014.
  7. I really thought Mastroianni was near the top of the DFA list if the Twins need to make room for more free agents. The interest in Davis (and the failure to get him) kind of indicates he's safe as the Twins are specifically looking for this type of player.
  8. Good for Doc. I would have liked to see him able to continue and he was one of the low risk/high reward arms I was hoping the Twins would look into, but I'm glad to see an elite player hang it up because he knows his body can no longer meet the expectations that comes with the name on his jersey. He surely will be an interesting HOF case in five years. He wasn't quite as dominant as Pedro Martinez, but both had a decade of dominance followed by a sudden injury-induced decline and retirement at age 37. I would imagine he gets in fairly quickly.
  9. I don't really have anything against Arroyo, but I think I'd prefer a 1-year lotto ticket. With three vet arms locked up, plus Gibson, Meyer and May ready for 2015, the Twins likely won't be looking for free agent pitching help. 2015 pitching class is pretty exciting at the moment, here are some of the top names: Brett Anderson (27) - $12MM club option with a $1.5MM buyout Homer Bailey (29) Josh Beckett (35) Chad Billingsley (30) - $14MM club option with a $3MM buyout Johnny Cueto (29) - $10MM club option with an $800K buyout Jorge De La Rosa (34) Ryan Dempster (38) Yovani Gallardo (29) - $13MM club option with a $600K buyout Dan Haren (34) Hisashi Iwakuma (34) - $7MM club option with a $1MM buyout Josh Johnson (31) Clayton Kershaw (27) Jon Lester (31) Justin Masterson (30) Brandon Morrow (30) - $10MM club option with a $1MM buyout Jeff Niemann (32) Jake Peavy (34) Max Scherzer (30) James Shields (33) Even if 2/3 get extended, injured or stink, that's a pretty impressive list and I'd like the Twins to dive into those waters also, but Nolasco, Hughes AND Arroyo would probably make it both cost and roster prohibitive.
  10. My guess is Arcia with 24. I don't think Willingham will prevail as he is often injured, and if he is not, I'd expect him to get traded mid-season. I don't think Sano gets the AB's for the title, though I'll be he is second on the team.
  11. I like Buck as a backup/platoon guy. In fact let him be the regular catcher for the entire month of April. It seems to me he is the opposite of the traditional Twins hitter, he starts off hot and produces most of his power in the first month or so.
  12. Berardino says the Padres are in the market for a lefty reliever and could move a young starter, suggesting Burch Smith. Honestly, I didn't know of this guy but sign me up: http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=smith-003bur If the stuff translates remotely closely to his numbers, he looks like he has plenty of upside. Which lefty does Berardino think the Twins could use to get a guy like this? Duensing? Thielbar? Diamond? I'd be fine moving any of them, in fact I find it hard to believe those three have that kind of trade value. I can't imagine he's thinking of Perkins.
  13. Yes I agree. I don't think the Twins are against strike outs, but they may be poor at evaluating who may have this ability at the MLB level. Perhaps the biggest issue is that they value control more than they value the ability to miss bats. One could argue this is a correct philosophy, but then the issue is that theTwins just can't draft or develop guys who can miss bats and avoid walks.
  14. The Twins don't really have a comparable young arm to Smith in terms of status and experience aside from Gibson. Would you want to trade him for Aoki?
  15. Well I pulled it out of my butt. I figure it should be high enough that the players can't simply turn down a small market offer and run to the Yankees. I don't care too much how it works but I do think it shouldn't intentionally aid the big markets as this new deal seems to. It was just a random thought, I must confess I wasn't invited to the negotiating table for some reason.
  16. Because 15% is a hefty raise and there's no promise he'd get a better deal.
  17. It's a legit concern. Everyone knows the Twins 6ft plus starters regularly throw 200 innings. Can't wait to see Alex Meyers. That skyscraper is sure to throw 500 innings.
  18. I think sacrificing a first round pick is unfair to losing teams. I like this proposed system but think the fee will likely need to be higher. How about if the high bid can't get a deal done the next qualified team gets a shot at working out a deal, though they would be required to offer an average annual salary at least $15% higher than the first team did.
  19. I don't think Anderson would get two years on the free agent market, he'd only get one. It wouldn't cost Perkins to get him, not even close.
  20. I agree that the injury history is concerning, but the latest one was a broken ankle which shouldn't be a huge red flag. I also agree that that dealing with Beane can be hazardous but the trade for Jim Johnson seemed foolhardy considering the $10 million price tag. I don't think Anderson will require much to get. He's also a free agent after this year, that sucks, but it also should limit his cost.
  21. Susan Slusser states that it is believed the Twins have talked to the A's about Anderson. It sounds kind of exciting, but it really is a no-brainer that Ryan would check in on him. The Twins really should be, and seem to be after any above average arm. I'd be all for it depending on the asking price, I can't imagine it's too high, but Beane has gotten pretty good value for his pitchers in the past.
  22. Better than that time John woke up to find $200 worth of Hashbury's finest acid on his nightstand and a dead women naked in his bed.
  23. Strange though that the A's of all teams are OK with paying a closer $10 million but couldn't find $13 million to spend on Tim Hudson. Doesn't seem like wise financial management for a team that seems to embrace their winning despite being near the bottom of the leagues payscale.
  24. I'd like to give Daniel Hudson a shot. Really I'm OK with taking a shot at any of the (assumably) cheap low risk/high upside guys, Halladay, Santana, Niemann or Floyd. As some will say the team lacks leadership, I wouldn't mind signing Kevin Youkilis though as a righthander, he wouldn't really work in a platoon with Plouffe. Same with Casey McGehee who may have refound his stroke in Japan. I'd prefer Rajai Davis as a 4th OF/flavor of the month CF over Mastroianni and Presley.
  25. It seems to me the effectively wild guys generally end up in the pen. For the record though, I think Deduno gets a rotation spot or starts the season on the DL.
