  1. I didn't say they weren't decent free agent signings, I actually liked them all on their minor league contracts. That's different than putting them on the 25-man though. None of them did a thing to earn a spot on the MLB roster. Guerrier did have to wait, but they put him on the roster intead of letting him opt out. There were a half dozen bullpen arms in Rochester that were pitching better than he was. But again, I'm not making judgments on how those players have performed for the MLB club, only that they almost certainly got their 25-man spot due to a past relationship with the club, not on recent merit. And Anthony does sign the guys to contracts, he's a numbers guy. I really doubt the whole organization defers to his baseball accumen when Ryan is out of the office.
  2. Gardy's been mostly fine, but from the sound of it, Molitor has been the one responsible for the influence on defensive shifts. Also with Ryan out, I half suspect that Gardy was behind getting the band back together and handing undeserved 25-man roster spots to Bartlett, Kubel and Guerrier. Anthony isn't a baseball guy, I don't think he was making those calls. I'm not making any judgments as to what degree those moves worked, just that they seemed to be made out of sentimentality rather than baseball sense.
  3. I know there has been a lot of DFA swaps with the Jays, but I don't think we got Mastro back.
  4. An extra batter per inning? Damn that's a lot! I don't want that contract and I'd guess the Diamondbacks would give him away to anyone who claimed him. I'd take a flier on him on a modest 2 year deal but even at his best, I'm not a huge fan. He's just another PTC arm who makes his defense get 80% of his outs for him.
  5. I think the Tigers are going to struggle if Verlander doesn't get back on track, and at this point, something seems to be wrong with him. I don't think he's getting back to his elite level. The Tigers should still be favorits to win the division, but I think they are going to be an over-priced team that hovers just over mediocrity most of the season. I wouldn't be surprised if the winner of the AL Central once again is a team that would have missed out on a Wild Card opportunity had they not won their division.
  6. Since when did we start setting the bar so high for our middle infielders? Can't wait to see Berrios in AA. When/if that happens he will be two levels ahead of Eades and picked only one year before him. I think the perception of "safe" or "MLB ready" pitchers is largely over-estimated.
  7. Burton had a nice comeback to his career and a nice run with this team but it's got to be over. There are too many guys waiting in Rochester to do what he can't. Some of whom would make nice happy, huggy Twins stories themselves considering the paths they've taken.
  8. I see Mauer has the lowest slugging percentage of any player who has held a bat for the Twins today. The next lowest is Trevor Plouffe who's number is 70 points higher.
  9. I don't think Gordon is supposed to have that kind of speed, and many think he should have average power at the SS position, which DeShields did not. Edit: Ah you're talking about his son. Well son and father seem pretty similar.
  10. Wouldn't he learn more from instruction from Terry Steinbach and Joe Mauer? Two guys who caught at the MLB level for 24 years combined?
  11. While Hicks has certianly been taking his lumps, that clearly seems to be a case where the team's hand is forced due to a lack of CF options. I think it's pretty well believed that he'll be sent to Rochester as soon as the roster allows for it. Plouffe and Dozier aren't exacly young, and they have been a big part of the team's success, I'm not sure why they would be considered for demotion. One could argue they Twins let Arcia take his lumps at the MLB level upon his return from injury, but again, they have no reason to demote him, he was crushing the ball and aside from OBP concerns, isn't exacly "lumped." Pinto is really the only young player that is struggling, though I could see the same decision loom for Santana once his honeymoon is over. Either way, in past year's, the Twins let Dozier and Plouffe work on their game at the MLB level and it seems to have paid off in spades both offensively and defensively. I'd prefer Pinto get the same treatment, though I understand the desire to keep the hot-hitting Suzuki in place for the sake of winning now.
  12. Many people, including many Twins staffers think putting the ball in play is more efficient than strikeouts because theoretically you can get an out on one pitch. It's not happening though, instead, because Gibson and others aren't able to miss bats the batters are fouling off way too many pitches. So yes, he needs to miss more bats.
  13. People complain as it is when Mauer takes a walk as opposed to driving in runs, especially late in games. Just think how much he will be pitched around with the #9 batter hitting behind him. I like Mauer at #2 with Dozier or Willingham at #3.
  14. I'm guessing the sugrey news came out of nowhere not because the Twins were hiding anything, but because the media didn't care enough about Pelfrey to continue asking about his situation. Since when does a club hold a press conference to announce a surgery for such a minor player in the system? Why would they hide this? If anything it at least gives some plausible excuse for his poor performance after the boondoggle that was his multi-year contract. And I'm far from a Twins appologist.
  15. The Morales signing says the Twins aren't interested in letting young players take their lumps at the MLB level, though that's what I prefer. I'm also guessing he'll go down. Knowing how things usually work around here, about the time he is demoted, Suzuki will finally come back down to earth. Also, about the necessity of having a good defensive catcher to win; Brian Harper is laughing while he is polishing his WS ring as is Jared Saltilamacchia. Good hitting trumps good catching. Good pitching trumps them both.
  16. Any report on how hard Thorpe was throwing?
  17. I don't think so because I believe that most people are doing these rankings on perceived future contributions to the MLB club and if Walker can't get on base in A ball, he certainly won't at the MLB level. I'd suspect he'd get eaten alive in AAA in fact. Nope. Showing the tools needed to succeed at the MLB level is more important, and he's not doing that. Being able to get on base is probably one of the biggest indicators of upward success. Even if it wasn't, the Twins clearly value it and may hold him back simply for this reason. No, but mostly because the other stud 1B also have great OBP skills. Cabrera, Pujols, Fielder, Teixeira, Votto, these guys all get/got on base at a tremendous rate as well.
  18. I'm not suggesting playoffs, I just assume that if the Twins are still in a similar position to what they are in now (and signing Morales suggests they expect to be) when Meyer is called up, settling for a pitch count of 80 doesn't seem like it will fly with teammates and fans who will expect more.
  19. I regretted not getting in on this one back in the day, so here goes: The Orange Man By David Lynch Trevor awakens and rises from his bed of disembodied eyes. Their relief of his mass is as clear as their vision of him, that of a malevolent God who thoughtlessly lays his calico colored body upon them each night. Trevor steps over the homeless man in the rain jacket as he approaches the bathroom mirror. Staring back at him is an asian man who silently nods as he flosses his teeth. At the breakfast table Trevor gazes at Trevor Plouffe, his wife of ten decades. He smells the almonds in her hair and knows she once again spent the night in the orchards. Did the Orange Man visit her again underneath the baren almond tree? Trevor thought he had. What kind of compromise was reached this time? Trevor kisses his wife Trevor goodbye leaving the brass key on the table. She will bury it even deeper today he thinks to himself. Stepping outside he adjusts his fedora and then looks up to the pulsating red moon which directs him through his day's journey. Climbing atop his bicycle, he pushes off to work wondering if he will be manning 5th base today or if he will be hawking cat spleen to the hungry children cheering on the team in the stands. No day is the same at K-Mart Field.
  20. Yup. I'm not saying it's a foregone conclusion that he'll always be a contact pitcher, but I can't find a pitcher who is able to miss bats at the MLB level that couldn't do the same in Low A. When it was reported that he wasn't using his slider we had some logical reasons to explain the lack of strikeouts. Now we're going to need another logical reason that trumps historical trends.
  21. Well it's hard to face them when most of them are on your team. That's the case right?
  22. No Vargas, Romero, Gonsalves, Burdi, Diaz, Walker, Kepler..... There's a lot of talent here. Let's hope a bunch of it translates to the majors.
  23. They don't, but I think we can say that the odds are pretty decent that May would not be less effective than Correia is now at the MLB level. With varying degrees of change, we can probably say something similar about most of the AAA pitchers. And a couple of the AA pitchers. And a water pitcher.
  24. I would probably need a change of pants if I saw that Burdi was put in AA. The Twins haven't even had a draftee start the year in Low A the last two years. Not even the college arms with polish or major conference experience.
